I’m not a feminist blog, but I am a filmmaker and a decent human being, and this is so shocking it needs sharing. 

These screenshots are from a documentary called India’s Daughter. It tells a story of 23-year-old medical student who was brutally gang raped in a moving bus in December 2012. She died of her injuries in the hospital. These are the responses of the rapists and their defence lawyers. The film aired on BBC Four last night, and it’s already been banned in India and received a legal notice from Indian Government. 

Go watch this film. Prepare to be shocked, prepare to be frustrated and angry, but please watch it. If you are in UK it’s available on BBC iPlayer until 11th of March. It’s also available on Youtube. The misogynist culture in India, which these men also represent, has been silenced for a long time, but now the people are demanding for justice. This film should not be silenced.

Racist stickers found on East Austin businesses

AUSTIN — A Facebook post documenting a racist act is sparking outrage in Austin. A woman saw a sticker on the front window of women’s clothing store Rare Trends in East Austin, took a picture and posted it. The sticker looks like a seal and states “Exclusively for White People. Maximum of 5 colored customers.” There’s also a city logo and above it the words “Sponsored by the City of Austin Contemporary “…. [X]

Good lord. I haven’t been living in the Austin-area that long (going on 6 years in July), but even I remember when East Austin was probably the most diverse area of the city (and was probably the last really large Latino community). I remember a friend from school telling me to not look for apartments there a few years ago because it was “too sketchy.” I remember “Keep East Austin Shitty.”

Then like suddenly South Congress and Hyde Park started boring the hipster-techie scene and it’s like they all moved out there and replaced all the taco places Torchey’s, and now it’s this. Just like the rest of fucking Texas, even if Austin wants to pretend it’s the progressive bastion of tolerance and diversity - and honestly San Antonio kicks their ass at that.
