I am Bobla Blubb, ringading on AO3, painter, artist, writer, reader, lover of fanart and fanfics.  At the moment I prefer to create fanart for Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death.  This blog contains stuff about fandoms I like, such as Good Omens, Our Flag Means Death, Sherlock and Ylvis.  I may also post some of my original art.

2025 was a year of many OFMD fandom projects. The first one was 'You wear fine frames well', which animated the Moonlight Kiss On Deck - featuring Ed's Fish in a prominent role. 💖💋🐟 I got into this project late, as a pinch hitter, so I only had time to draw one frame. But later that year I got the chance to draw one more frame from this kissy scene, as part of another project. Will get into that in another post. 😘

I'm trying to collect my fanart and fandom projects in one place, and this time it's another wave of our attempts to get OFMD renewed for the third and final season. (The 'Auxilliary Wardrobe' projects.) While our first attempt - the 'Renew as a Crew' project (see my separate post about my art for that) - was done while we still had hopes for a renewal, this 'Save Our Flag Means Death' project was our desperate attempts to make HBO Max change their minds after they shut down the show after just two seasons. The fandom's attempts at saving our show grew more and more desperate, culminating in our plea being displayed on a huge pink billboard on Times Square. One of these attempts included the creation of a lot of individual OFMD-flags which were put together in a video. Unfortunately I don't have the link to the finished video anymore, but these three flags are my contribution for that project.

Heyyyy so on behalf of myself and all other lighter-skinned POC who have ever had a white person try and match foundation for them to absolutely disastrous results…PLEASE stop making Ed so much darker than he actually is. I think some of you heard “stop whitewashing characters of color” and swung all the way in the other direction and that’s…incorrect also. It can feel incredibly othering, as if white people can only think to make POC look Like Them (whitewashing, erasing their identity entirely) or VERY VERY NOT LIKE THEM with no in-between.

Painting non-white skin isn’t just about value (light/dark), it has a lot to do with undertones, overtones, the way different tones appear in places where the skin is thinner, where and how much the skin flushes, if and where hyperpigmentation shows up…Many POC have skin that’s overall a similar value but a different hue to white skin. Even in a more simplified illustration style, you can play with the warmth or coolness of tones to get the idea across.

The first is a (never finished) portrait of a half-Filipino, half-white person (meeee hi!). Now this is not the most perfect example because was wearing makeup when I did this, so my skintone is a bit flattened out, but you can still see that the areas around my chin have a greenish-gold cast (without makeup I have hyperpigmentation here) and the very thin skin under my eyes is gray-green.

The second is a portrait of a very light-skinned white person. You can see the areas around the chin are much more blue, and purple around the eyes. Also much more of a red flush in various places.

The skintones of these two subjects aren’t THAT far off in value, but the actual tones involved are quite different!

Lots of you are illustrating digitally anyway, so if you’re having issues, a quick shortcut is to just copy and paste a screencap of the characters in similar lighting conditions and just use the eyedropper tool. I’ve even seen pre-made palettes floating around by folks that have done this! But like, please please stop doing this. It’s especially troubling when people draw Ed with Stede, because like…in-universe, the Blackbeard persona is in no small part a racialized caricature foisted on Ed due to his identity as a POC—we really don’t need to reinforce that IRL by drawing Ed as this tough-looking character with exaggeratedly dark skin next to dainty, gentlemanly, lace-clad white Stede. ALSO—I see people making Frenchie darker than he actually is, and giving Roach and Oluwande the same complexion. Black folks have a WIDE variety of skintones, owing to both the fact that they come from a wide swath of the globe AND due to a history of violent colonization. Please don’t erase that reality.

Yes!! This is what I like to point to. A convenient scene in natural lighting where there hands and faces are right up against each other.

Like, it is worth saying that camera equipment is not calibrated to pick up the skintones of POC correctly BUT there’s no universe where Taika Waititi’s skin tone is as dark as people are making it.

There are TONS of photos of Rhys and Taika together over the years (as I’m sure most of you know lmao) that you can reference.

Honestly? If you have a very stylized way of drawing, it’s just a matter if picking a warmer/more golden color for Ed and a pinker/redder color for Stede; you’re not even going to be moving much along the value slider.

(Stede is also not super pale, btw—his skin tone is on the ruddier side. Making him a super pale “lily white” only makes Ed’s skin tone look more off.)

I really think a lot of people do this out of a fear of being accused of whitewashing? But I promise if you take time to get this right AND make sure to not whitewash Taika’s facial features, it will read correctly. I see people make this error WAY more than I see art I would consider whitewashed. And there’s tons of art that gets it right!

no but for real...taika nailed the scene in the blanket fort. like, the way lucius asks, "and this fictional character he's having a hard time?" and you can see ed struggle. his lips begin to quiver as he tries to keep it together, you can see the tears in his eyes and you can hear the pain in his voice when he goes, "yeah...maybe", it's heartbreaking and raw and it's just so incredibly human...idk I just think taika did a fantastic job.

Taika likes to say he's the laziest actor, and he might be when it comes to research, but holy hell did he do an amazing job in Ep10. The range of subtleties in his facial expressions, even up to the point of barely perceptible muscle clenches of his jaw or throat when Izzy threatens him, the sudden rage that almost completely transforms his face when he calls him dog. Like i can't even see Taika in Edward,I only see Ed.

His little voice break in the blanket fort is like a piercing through the heart, he's so sincere when he says he wants to curl up and die, you can feel his heartbreak. Add to that the amazing last shot of ugly crying and I'm speechless.

Just lost for words.
