re: my last reblog of that post about karlach and gortash—

by the time they meet again in act 3, i think gortash is legitimately proud of her, even while she is seething with (understandable) hatred at the very sight of him. i don’t think he is capable of feeling anything else for her at that point, for a number of reasons; ‘regret’ or ‘remorse’ aren’t options, both because bane wouldn’t approve of them, but also because they’d invite too much introspection. if gortash lets himself feel any regret over his decision to sell karlach to zariel, he’s also cracking open a door in his own heart that i think has been soldered shut out of necessity for decades. opening it now would shatter more than his own worldview, it would shatter his sense of self.

“but he knows that it was wrong of his parents to sell him to raphael. why else would he go back to their house and violently tadpole them himself while telling them he wants them to feel as powerless as they made him feel? he didn’t need to have that revelation, he’s known it from day one.” you’re right, on all accounts, but i think this goes deeper than knowing what was done to him was wrong. it goes down to the very foundations of who gortash is as a person by the time the party encounters him in act 3. yes, he fully comprehends that what his parents did to him was unforgivably evil, and as a devout banite, he also believes he is fully within his rights to punish them the way he does because he now has the power to do so. but that’s the crux of it: he can be as bitter and hateful and resentful towards his parents for what they did to him as he wants, but he cannot let himself regret that it happened, because without that betrayal, he would not (he believes) have the power and authority he has amassed today. in every way that matters, being sold to raphael and living his formative years in abject suffering and torment inside a crucible of hellfire made him (he believes) into the strongest, most capable version of himself. that strength, that power, has to be worth the tremendous cost he was forced to pay.

and so when he sees karlach again, the only thing he can consciously allow himself to believe and feel is pride, that she has gone through her own crucible and come out the other side of it refined and reforged. because if he truly lets himself see her pain and hear her words as she tells him, repeatedly, that none of this strength and power was worth the unimaginable suffering she endured to gain it, then he might also, just for a moment, be forced to look on the blood price he paid for his own dauntless power. he might be forced—not to ask himself whether it was all worth it, because he isn’t there yet, he’s not ready—to acknowledge a degree of uncertainty about the fundamental value of everything he has accomplished at the cost of his very soul.

truly, i can’t imagine anything more existentially terrifying to the chosen of bane than the brief, heretical impulse to doubt the value of your own power.
