I was just looking up the various fonts used in Undertale to confirm something, and most of the answers were expected ones – Papyrus, Comic Sans, Wingdings, etc. – and then I got to the font used for displaying your stats in battle, and... well now.

My absolute favorite Undertale headcanon has to be “Papyrus can do everything Sans can do, he just chooses not to.”

Not even in a “if Papyrus was actually trying to kill you his fight would make the genocide run final boss look easy” way, in a “Papyrus sees Sans teleporting and judges for being too lazy to walk” way.  Obviously Papyrus could go from Snowdin to Hotland in half a second but why would he?  He’s got a pair of perfectly good legs!

I’ve seen it in a few different places and I love it.

I’ll never get over the amalgamates getting to go back home to their families in True Pacifist. I’m so, so used to stories that go, “this person is too broken, physically or mentally or both, to ever be put back together. they’re not the way they once were, so they’re good as dead. killing them is the only act of mercy.“

I’m so glad Undertale didn’t do that.

The True Lab intentionally plays on horror tropes. Phantasmal pursuers whose ability to appear and disappear defy logical attempts at evasion. Mutated, undead shambling creatures whose original selves are utterly destroyed.

But…like the rest of Undertale’s relationship to RPG tropes…subversion occurs.

It becomes increasingly clear that the amalgamates aren’t evil ghosts or mindless zombies. They’re victims of medical malpractice who miss their families. And when we find them returned to their families…they’re happy. Their families are happy. Things are different now, yea. It’s pretty weird for everyone. The new situation will take some time getting used to. But… it’s mostly good.

I love Toby Fox’s absolute dedication to not being a public figure. He made what a lot of people consider to be one of the best videogames of all time, raked in a bunch of awards, and then promptly fucked off and kept his mouth shut. He tweets once every several months. He won’t appear in public without a mask. We do not, to my knowledge, have a single photo of him. He’s finally going to do some commentary over his work for Undertale’s anniversary, and he will only do it via text-to-speech. An utter refusal to concede even an inch on maintaining his privacy. King shit.

Lots of people going out of their way to inform me that there are in fact photos and videos of him out there, and I have decided I am not going to look at them. I encourage everyone to do the same. I don’t know what Toby Fox looks like and I never want to. As far as I am concerned he is simply a little white dog.

honestly what gets me about undertale is like… its such a kind and gentle world for the most part, but toby fox still had the guts to have some really fucking devastating stuff happen with asriel that just…never gets resolved. you can get the best ending of the game, give the fucking amalgamates a happy ending, give every monster a yellow name in the credits, give frisk a good life with a loving family, open the secret door to meet the annoying dog himself, but you absolutely cannot save this one lonely boy, no matter what. its just the perfect bitter counterpoint to everything else in the game, it makes me fall in love so much more.
