They exist in Haiti. Thats how my great great great grandfather died.
Wait hold on someone explain this to me I’m so lost lol
The belief is Haiti is that certain women can live under water and will lived there for years… These women are extremely beautiful and men being men can’t stay away from a good looking women are seduce and then dragged under water and are never to be seen again… My great grandmother was one of these women… One day her mother sent her to go get water from the river and she never came back 10 years later they see her come up the road in all white with beautiful jewelry all around her body sing up a storm.. When her family asked her where she was she told them she was under water… thats the story my grandma always use to tell me growing up

I love African and African Diasporan mythology.
we call them “river mumma” in Jamaica
I NEED MORE MYTHOLOGY INVOLVING BLACK CULTURES IN THE DIASPORA.
We call the “mammi water” in Nigeria
Drunk History just did a really amazing episode on the Stonewall Riots.
Besides everything, two great things about this episode: 1) The narrator is Crissle West, the woman who narrated the Harriet Tubman episode; and 2) Comedy Central actually cast transgender actors for transgender roles.
Gifs: Comedy Central
Check it out.
Fucking perfect. Putting the narrative back in the hands of the changemakers makes me unspeakably happy. *sniffles*
Today is not the motherfucking day.
me: im asexual
people: but how do you know if you havent had sex???

Pride Month | June 2017
Wishing you a powerful Pride month of celebration, protest, community and resilience. Remember: We didn’t get this far without a fight, and the work is far from over.
People on this site are just…disturbing when it comes to fiction in general. They literally want everything to be perfect, happy sunshine and roses (probably because so many of them are living vicariously through fiction as a substitute for reality, and thus can’t help projecting themselves into it). That’s just…not how fiction works. That’s the most boring shit–who honestly wants to read/watch that??? We NEED strife in fiction, as there is strife in reality. Characters NEED obstacles to overcome in order to have a character arc. A story NEEDS a conflict to actually be a story. If all you ever read is the kind of Mary Sue crap where everyone gets along, you’re going to be the most boring, sheltered motherfucker, and have no idea what to do when you get out into the real world.
Villains need to be allowed to be villains.
Characters need to be allowed to have bad things happen to them, even if they’re the “good guys”.
Fiction needs “bad” things, because it helps us recognize, understand, and cope with those “bad” things.

“Countless others have come before you, seeking weapons or weaknesses or battle strategies!”
this is one of the truly brilliant things about this show. while most kids’ shows will have good vs evil conflict, atla has a war. a real war, between people, with all the moral greyness and points of view made clear. the fire nation isn’t evil: it’s a repressed country under the strict control of its ruler. we’re shown how history is altered and propaganda is taught as fact, so the people grow up moulded to hate all other nations.
and then we get lines like this, which make us stop and think wait, is what the other nations are doing really right? after all, Ba Sing Se was supposed to be a haven, but turned out to be repressive and full of lies.
in this case we know that Aang is justified, and we trust him to do what’s right because he has such high moral standards. then we get to the finale and all that is challenged again.
it’s just a brilliant show guise.
this show’s fucking flawless, okay? i just have so much love for atla

Words are meaningless. People lie to themselves so even if they think it’s true, it holds no weight. Actions matter.
Love is precious because it can be lost.
You can love someone and they can love you and sometimes that isn’t enough.
Love is only a portion of a relationship. There’s also personal journeys that can conflict with a relationship. Self love and individual destiny take priority. Always.
Not everyone can be saved. Even if they can, you might not be the one to do it. Don’t perch on anchors.
Facts and science are the worst way to convince someone. Feelings matter.
You can be understood by someone who is mentally stable. Just because someone else has shared your experiences doesn’t mean they understand you. It doesn’t mean they want to either.
You need to find someone patient and open minded. Mature. Damaged doesn’t mean mature.
There’s a small distinction between curious and passionately curious. They look the same, but how one behaves is what dictates the difference.
You can stop spending money, but you are always spending time.
You are young. You have time. Spend it on people who spend their time with you.
Avoid anything reminiscent of your mother. Immediately. Just peace the fuck out of there.
Nonsense people are to be left in stories and plots as archetypes. Not in your real life. You absorb what you surround yourself with. Remember that.
You are love. Your essence is love. Somewhere along the way, someone hurt you and steered you away from being yourself. Somewhere, someone drove you away from yourself because they’re not in touch with themselves. Feeling empty has nothing to do with finding something new. It has to do with getting in touch with that which already exists.
Kill your inner critic.
Also, kill your inner bitch.
If they care, they’ll show it. Stay true to the people who are consistently there for you. Don’t prioritize the rest. The rest are just unnamed supporting extras on the set of your life.
Be greedy. Triple down on yourself. You are the constant in your life. You can’t leave yourself.
When you’re lost, find your why. Reignite your passions.
When you’re empty, give. I swear it’ll fill you up.
Take it all in. You have shit memory anyway, so you will forget the now. This beautiful moment. Take it in now because this is the only time you can genuinely appreciate it.
You will love yourself more than anyone will ever love you.
Something I wish more people would understand…
What’s her name?
Her name is Jane Elliott. She was a former schoolteacher, now she’s anti-racism activist, feminist and LGBT activist. She’s tiny, mean, and boss as fuck.
She’s known for her “blue eyes-brown eyes experiment” where she divides a group of volunteers from the blues and the browns. The minute the people walk in, the blue-eyes know they’re not welcomed. She makes them wait in a separate room, gives them shitty chairs, bad food, and shows them less respect. And (obviously) it causes all sorts of discomfort and rage, but that’s precisely her point. It doesn’t help that most blue-eyed volunteers happen to be white as well. Sometimes they get the message, sometimes they don’t and leave, sometimes crying or screaming. And Jane Elliott says that’s exactly what minorities want to do everyday of their lives, but they simply cannot do.
Did I mention she’s boss as fuck?
Note that the blue eyes-brown eyes experiment started with her students. I think she taught third grade, so 8 and 9 year-olds. There’s whole documentaries on the experiment and what the kids learned and how it effected them later in life. Her expirement is one of the few things I actually remember from my high school psychology class.
This is from the Wikipedia article on Elliott:
“First exercise involving eye color and brown collars[edit]
Steven Armstrong was the first child to arrive in Elliott’s classroom, (referring to Martin Luther King, Jr.) he asked “Why’d they shoot that King?” After the rest of the class arrived, Elliott asked them how they think it feels to be a black boy or girl. She suggested to the class that it would be hard for them to understand discrimination without experiencing it themselves and then asked the children if they would like to find out. The children agreed with a chorus of “yeah"s. She decided to base the exercise on eye color rather than skin color in order to show the children what racial segregation would be like.[2]
On the first day of the exercise, she designated the blue-eyed children as the superior group. Elliott provided brown fabric collars and asked the blue-eyed students to wrap them around the necks of their brown-eyed peers as a method to easily identify the minority group. She gave the blue-eyed children extra privileges, such as second helpings at lunch, access to the new jungle gym, and five extra minutes at recess. The blue-eyed children sat in the front of the classroom, and the brown-eyed children were sent to sit in the back rows. The blue-eyed children were encouraged to play only with other blue-eyed children and to ignore those with brown eyes. Elliott would not allow brown-eyed and blue-eyed children to drink from the same water fountain and often chastised the brown-eyed students when they did not follow the exercise’s rules or made mistakes. She often exemplified the differences between the two groups by singling out students and would use negative aspects of brown-eyed children to emphasize a point.
At first, there was resistance among the students in the minority group to the idea that blue-eyed children were better than brown-eyed children. To counter this, Elliott lied to the children by stating that melanin was linked to their higher intelligence and learning ability. Shortly thereafter, this initial resistance fell away. Those who were deemed “superior” became arrogant, bossy, and otherwise unpleasant to their “inferior” classmates. Their grades on simple tests were better, and they completed mathematical and reading tasks that had seemed outside their ability before. The “inferior” classmates also transformed – into timid and subservient children who scored more poorly on tests, and even during recess isolated themselves, including those who had previously been dominant in the class. These children’s academic performance suffered, even with tasks that had been simple before.[6]
The next Monday,[2] Elliott reversed the exercise, making the brown-eyed children superior. While the brown-eyed children did taunt the blue-eyed children in ways similar to what had occurred the previous day, Elliott reports it was much less intense. At 2:30 on that Wednesday, Elliott told the blue-eyed children to take off their collars. To reflect on the experience, she asked the children to write down what they had learned.[2]”

Sorry I made this post so long. But I love her. And this is important.
Joe Biden marrying two White House staffers
During my very first ever dnd experience, my gm who’s since become a close friend was running me through a one on one campaign when he found out exactly why he needed to get me into a group
Gm: so you have a couple different options on how to infiltrate this man’s castle.
Me: I’m gonna marry him
Gm: this is a stealth recon mission, you’re here to steal stuff
Me: yes and how can he say no after he’s slept with me
Needless to say I turned a two hour campaign into six hours of doing nothing he’d planned because who’s going to say no to their wife?
