My hometown, y'all! The progressive hippie/punk/intellectual haven in the vast cultural wasteland of Kansas. The little blue dot in a sea of red that hosted (and fully embraced in a warm hug) the Algerian football team. It has a thriving arts community, which includes some critically-acclaimed, award-winning F&SF authors, and is home to KU, the first place in the world you can get a degree in science fiction studies. It's also home to Haskell Indian Nations University.

Lawrence has a higher percentage of working artists than almost anyplace else in the US--including LA and NYC--and the joke used to be that to find the number of bands in Lawrence, you could take the total population (about 96,000, plus around 10,000 students) and divide by four. That population comes from all over the world, by the way.

Lawrence was founded by abolitionists, and was burned to the ground twice by pro-slavery forces, but rebuilt both times.

If Lawrence weren't in the US, I'd move back there in a heartbeat (unless I could get there faster). It's one of the few things I miss about the US, and the ONLY thing I miss about Kansas.

I'm not saying it has no problems--it definitely does, and we've had to constantly fight against conservative influences that want to turn it into a hellhole for profit--but it's my favorite city I've ever lived in--and I've lived on three different continents so far.

Back in the (I believe mid?) 2010s, a few artists got together to create this album called Universal Love, which was basically a bunch of gay covers of classic heterosexual romance songs. This was either in celebration of or to argue for marriage equality, I don’t remember exactly when it came out so I can’t say. The point is that for whatever reason, rights issues or I don’t know, a bunch of this album has been seemingly completely wiped from every streaming service and every corner of the internet. I’ve been trying so desperately to find Valerie June’s cover of Mad About The Girl for fucking years now, and it continues to drive me absolutely fucking insane.
