Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
I once saw an article put it this way: often "this is problematic" is used to shut down discussion of a thing, by casting a sweeping but vague judgement. But really if used at all it should start a discussion about what the problem is.

honestly the funniest thing about the lord of the rings is how gandalf is literally a minor god sent to middle-earth by The Big Man Himself and yet literally nobody apart from the elves seems to recognise this or take him seriously
like yeah gandalf is pretty grumpy most of the time but how would YOU feel if you were the fantasy equivalent of an angel and a bunch of people who only come up to your knee were just like âoh fuck itâs that spooky old wizardâ every time you showed up for a friendâs birthday party
I mean to be fair, he seems to actively enjoy the hobbitsâ complete lack of awe, because what Gandalf loves most about hobbits is that they as a culture are 1000% unimpressed by any of the mythic-scale bullshit constantly going on right outside their borders. The thing Gandalf loves second-most about hobbits is their weed.
What gets on his nerves is the rest of the free peoples of middle earth, for whom he is constantly busting his ass and who consistently respond to his attempts to help with âwhy donât you ever have any good news?â and also who donât offer him any weed.
Third thing is that Hobbits build increasingly elaborate road systems to Keep Gandalf Out, which is really the sort of nonlethal enviormental enrichment he needs
Speaking as someone fast approaching 50, I see in Gandalf someone who is Tiredâą and while he will not often smile, he adores the quietness of the Shire and also finds great joy in messing with people who take themselves too seriously
