Other Bat Dresses
Sewing to Distraction has an entire post dedicated to her experience sewing the EvaDress Bat Dress here.
For another interpretation of the Bat Dress, check out Darling and Dash’s post here. The Bat Headpiece was made from, “Black striped netting over the shoulder drape gathered and pinned to front with furry bat.”
Bat Dress Background
There is an excellent post on Victorian Bat Dresses on Cogpunk Steamscribe here, titled: The Victorian Batgirl: a Steampunk Feminist Perspective
Below is a Victorian German photograph of a “Bat Woman” costume found here.
Another Bat Costume photograph is from the Museum Victoria here.
Lastly, check out this Bat Fan from the 1900s that sold at auction.
“Hand painted, exceptionally rare miniature bat fan. On thin shaved wood. One of the most unusual items we have seen. Wingspan 3.5 inches. Circa 1900.”
#she speaks to me on a human level #just because your life is not together at the moment doesn’t mean you aren’t capable #of extraordinary things #that’s the best message DW ever gave me #at least RTD era #Moffat does not affect me on any emotional level #rtd dw forever (via teruel-a-witch)
#normal people doing normal things in extraordinary circumstances; who just happen to save the world#that’s what i want again#not some impossible paradox wrapped in riddles and enigma and topped off with a spunky bow#no one can aspire to be a paradox#but perhaps you are reasonably good at gymnastics#or you play an instrument#or are especially observant#these incredibly human actions aren’t worthless - you might just end up saving the universe using them
(grayjoyed)
#yes this#this is why i stopped watching dw#cause it stopped being about normal humans discovering they can do extraordinary things by being themselves#not the paradoxical enigma impossible people saving the world#i cant relate to that shit (via avatarstateyipyip )
we joke about tumblr’s pjge (post john green era) but it is legitimately wild that a) a social media site allowed others to edit your posts for five years, and b) that we all agreed to use the honor system about it until mr. green arrived
No, but seriously, I’m still waiting for the day it’s generally acknowledged on this site that the way John Green was treated here was awful and there was nothing funny about it.
Harassing a guy who’d done nothing to deserve it by adding explicit sexual content to his posts was bad enough, but then people started spreading rumors about how he was “creepy” for having a bunch of teenage fans (he’s a YA author, what a surprise), then pretty much outright accused him of being a sexual predator based on absolutely no evidence, and had the gall to be offended when he understandably got angry about this.
And then he left the site, because… well, who wouldn’t, after all of that?
There’s nothing funny about tumblr’s “post john green era”. There’s nothing cute about how people on this site harassed and slandered a guy just because… I don’t know, they didn’t like his books? His online persona? To hell with that.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before + Tropes
Also:
*make literal websites that are nothing but a page with numbers counting down the years, months, weeks, days, hours, seconds, until an actress/model/singer turns 18…*
*…then instantly start making vile, graphic comments detailing all the sexual things they want to do to her, as if they weren’t saying those things already*
*vehemently defend men like Drake for grooming and preying on underage girls*
*treat dating older women as a fetish/weird kink/taboo, but find it completely normal when grown ass men date girls over ten years younger than them*
*call underage girls “jailbait” to deflect all blame off men onto the girls*
*desperately defend themselves by insisting men have evolved to be biologically attracted to young, hairless women because youth=fertility, despite the fact that only prepubescent girls are hairless, meaning hairless=not yet capable of becoming pregnant. Not to mention the fact that one of the leading causes of death (maybe THE leading cause of death, though I can’t remember the specifics) of girls age 15-19 is childbirth, meaning young girls are clearly NOT meant to have children*
*refuse to tell their friends that they’re being predatory to underage girls yet scream at any woman who’ll listen that “nOt AlL mEn ArE lIkE tHaT!!!¡!¡¡!!¡!”*
is this what growing up is like
me at 14: wow, protagonists in media my age! how relateable!
me at 28: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHILD SOLDIERS? WHERE ARE ALL THE ADULTS? WHO LET THIS HAPPEN AND WHY ARE THEY NOT BEING PROSECUTED BY LAW WITHIN THESE FICTIONAL UNIVERSES
In the same vein:
Me at 14: oh protagonists that are 17-20-ish, they’re basically adults, right?
Me at 28: Oh my Gods you’re babies who left you in charge?!
Ariel: Daddy, I love him! Me at 14: Yeah, girl, you tell him! Me at 30:
Marnie in Halloweentown: I’m thirteen, okay? I’m practically grown up! I’m certainly old enough to make my own choices – right?
Me at 7: Right!
Me at 13: Right! …Well, okay, maybe not practically grown up, but still, right!
Me at 28:
You either die young or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
This is so true
Me as teenager: Yeah, girl, you hook up with that older guy, this is super hot!
Me as an adult: all of these men should be arrested
Me age 24 re-reading Harry Potter
This, a thousand times this.
GOD, that last gif is so accurate. that’s the best way to describe this feeling.
