Parent rant

So I've been searching for alternative "punishments" for my 5yo. He has anxiety and I don't like yelling at him or putting him in isolation (his words, mine are go to your room for timeout and cool down ). Everything I've been finding has been telling me that, as a parent, I suck. We all suck. If your kid sasses you, it's because you disciplined him/her in public once. You should never discipline your kid while others are around. Which, I will admit to having done before. If he is being disrespectful, I will tell him right away so he realizes he should not say or do whatever he just did. If your kid lies to you, it's because they got in trouble for telling the truth. If they got in trouble for telling the truth, it's probably because they did something naughty in the first place. Like I always tell my son, if you did something naughty, you'll get in less trouble for telling the truth than you would for lying. Have I been parenting all wrong? Does somebody have any answers for me? If you have anxiety, or have a kid with anxiety, how should the punishments go when you/they act up?

Okay so to be completely honest, I feel like at the end of Civil War Sam will get to Wakanda at some point (after stopping to tell his ma he’s okay or somethink idk) and be like “Where’s Bucky?” And Steve will haltingly explain with his manpain face of American woe that Bucky has gone back into cryo for everybody’s safety and Sam will just be like “Oh hell no.”

Then he’ll march himself up to the cryo chamber where there’s a very obvious pile of blankets where Steve has been sleeping and crying probably, with Steve and T’Challa following after and Steve will be asking T’Challa to seal the doors or stop him or something, and T’Challa will just lean against the wall with arms folded and say very dryly “The bird man is too powerful, I cannot stop him.”

So of course there’s a big green button that just says ‘DEFROST’ and Sam hits it while Steve makes sad noises about his promise to Bucky but doesn’t actually make any move to stop Sam, and there’s a big venting of vapour and then the glass cover slides away and Bucky wakes up all groggy and shit to Sam’s mad as hell face and starts to try and say something, and Sam just smacks him over the head.

“Wanda is here now. Wanda will fuck you up if you go all White Boy Soldier again. You are safe as fucking houses here with the goddamn KING of Wakanda protecting you, and you are making Steve sad.”

And that’s how Bucky gets out of cryo and how Wanda and Vision (he’s doing purple-man-pining, which looks a lot like Steve but purple, so Tony sends him to find Wanda) figure out how to break down Bucky’s programming.

And any time Sam does something that Bucky doesn’t like, Sam just mutters, “At least I didn’t get myself damn well frozen and make Steve sad.”

Dear Will #1

Hey, bud. So, this is your first "Dear Will" letter (obviously, based on the "#1"). You had a bad night at t-ball tonight. Your last double-header of the season and you didn't actually get to play either game because you were too concerned with the fact that neither your father nor myself were sitting by the team bench. You yelled, screamed, threw a hissy fit, and ended up having to leave. You were disrespectful to the point of making me cry. I keep blaming hormones, but tonight really hurt. You've always just been like that in the comfort of our home. When I finally had enough, and after your dad actually asked a police officer if he would get in trouble for smacking your lips TWICE for yelling at me, you and dad started walking towards the car. I asked the coach for your pictures and to apologize for you not being there when I started to cry. I'm very thankful for the stranger (a fellow mom to a teammate of yours) for attempting to comfort me. It didn't really work because she said her 13-year-olds both did the same thing still. I was so embarrassed. So...defeated. We signed you up for the sport so you'd have fun, make friends, learn to work with a team, branch out a bit from us. We got home and you kept repeating that you were a failure. You were a failure at t-ball. I'm sorry if I gave you that impression by making you leave, it was never my intention. But...if you're a failure at t-ball, then I'm a failure as a parent. Tonight was the first time I ever wanted to hit you. I know you're tired. I know you don't know EXACTLY what you're doing, or how you're making others feel. I also know I just got very frustrated with the scene you were making. I want to hug and cuddle you every time you cry. But if I do that, you will never learn to stand strong. You will never learn to stand on your own two feet. You will never learn to cope. I know you have anxiety (both social and separation); I also know that everything I know about anxiety comes from Google. We have to learn together. We have to work together. But at the same time, you have to treat others with respect. No matter how you may be feeling. I'm sorry for rambling. I love you more than anything. You're in my top three favorite people. We're going to get through this. We're also going to have more bad days. I learned a lesson today. It's okay to feel like a bad parent so long as your child knows without a doubt that you love them.

I feel inadequate

My friend's mom was given three weeks to live yesterday. She's been living with the knowledge that her mom can go at any time for a long time. But she's still worried about school (two weeks left of her sophomore year in college). She's still worried about work (I keep telling her that she has to take care of herself and her family). She has to take care of her 6 other siblings, all but one of whom are younger than her. I feel inadequate, because compared to her, my life has no problems. I have no reason to complain. I don't know how to help her. And then, I feel bad because I feel like I'm making it all about me. But...how do I help beyond making food? Beyond making sure she knows she has support? Beyond letting her know that she doesn't have to work if she can't. What do I do to let her know I care without being awkward or smothering her?
