Remorse, Jorge Luis Borges
“I shall remain in Borges, not in myself (if it is true that I am someone)...”
born on this day, August 24th 1899
happy birthday maestro!
“At my age [71], what can I do but plagiarize what I’ve already said, no?”
Jorge Luis Borges, from a interview for New York Times, 1971. (via borgesiana)
When I began to lose my eyesight, when the world began to fade away from me, there was a time among my friends … well they made, they poked fun at me because I was always wearing yellow neckties. Then they thought I really liked yellow, although it really was too glaring. I said, “Yes, to you, but not to me, because it is the only color I can see, practically!” I live in a gray world, rather like the silver-screen world. But yellow stands out.
Jorge Luis Borges
For a true poet, every moment of existence, every act, ought to be poetic since, in essence, it is so.
Jorge Luis Borges, Preface to The Gold of Tigers
“For me, beauty is a physical sensation, something we feel with our whole body. It is not the result of a judgment. We do not arrive at it by way of rules. We either feel beauty or we don’t.”
Jorge Luis Borges, Seven Nights (via borgesiana)
I couldn’t sleep that night. Towards the dawn I dreamed of an engraving in the style of Piranesi that I’d never seen, or had seen and forgotten, which represented the labyrinth. It was a stone amphitheater, surrounded by cypresses and taller than these. It had no doors or windows, but an infinite row of vertical, narrow slits. With the help of a magnifying glass I tried to find the Minotaur. I eventually found him. It was the monster of a monster; more bison than bull, his body lying in the dirt, sleeping, perhaps dreaming. Dreaming of what, of whom?
Jorge Luis Borges, There Are More Things
I think that the reader should enrich what he is reading. He should misunderstand the text; he should change it into something else.
Jorge Luis Borges (via borgesiana)
If life's meaning were explained to us, we probably wouldn't understand it. To think that a man can find it is absurd. We can live without understanding what the world is or who we are.
Jorge Luis Borges, On Life And Death, interview with Amelia Barili
Along with the new profile pic I’ve found, there was also an interview with Borges on life and death conducted by Amelia Barili.
Enjoy!

Know this: in some way you’re already dead.

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo
(Buenos Aires, 24 de agosto de 1899 - Ginebra, 14 de junio de 1986)
Jorge Luis Borges died on this day, 14th of June in 1986 in Geneva where he is buried. This is his tombstone. The inscription reads ...AND NE FORHTEDON NA which is Old English for be not afraid, and is a quote from an old English poem.
The story of the tombstone is interesting and ofcourse mysterious. You can read more about it on this blog
Rest in peace maestro!
...I saw the Aleph from every point and angle, and in the Aleph I saw the earth and in the earth the Aleph and in the Aleph the earth; I saw my own face and my own bowels; I saw your face; and I felt dizzy and wept, for my eyes had seen that secret and conjectured object whose name is common to all men but which no man has looked upon -- the unimaginable universe.
Jorge Luis Borges, Aleph
...who of us has never felt, while walking through the twilight or writing a date from his past, that something infinite had ben lost?
Jorge Luis Borges, Paradiso XXXI, 108
For in the beginning of literature is the myth, and in the end as well.
Jorge Luis Borges, last sentence from “Parable of Cervantes and the Quixote”
