I really really need to write that essay about Robin Hobb and names. Fitz has SO MANY NAMES, Keppet, Dogboy, Bastard, Fitzchivalry Farseer, Changer, Catalyst, Beloved, Tom Badgerlock, and they're all so telling! There's a paragraph in AA where Fitz talks about the fact that Burrich doesn't give any of the animals in Buckkeep generic names. There aren't any Spots or [insert other generic pet names here I can't find them], each name is thought through for the creature that will bear it. There's obivously some very sad things here, about how like, Burrich mostly just calls Fitz Boy (doesn't want to name him? Doesn't know how to call him anything in the absence of Chivalry?) But also, more generally, like, that really seems to be an ethos that is super important to Hobb's writing generally, this sort of onomastic determinism that is really present in the Six Duchies, and that reflects her characters visions of themselves. Like, I'm sorry, but the Fool calling himself the White Toymaker when he's trying to give up being a prophet, as though changing his name will change what his fate is... it hurts me honestly, it cuts me quick to the core.
