Hellboy (2004) novelization by Yvonne Navarro is the official literary adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s film and it’s the one that actually lets you inside the characters’ heads.

There’s this quiet, heartbreaking moment the movie never gave us.

Broom has just been told he has maybe six weeks left. Malignant sarcoma - lungs, spine, liver. The doctor offers hospitalization and pain management. Broom quietly shakes his head, shuffles his tarot cards, and says:

“I’d rather stay home… I’ll be making arrangements. For my son.”

Then he walks out of the building, leans on his cane, smiles at some kids in skeleton costumes… and stops at a newsstand.

He buys a whole dozen Baby Ruth bars.

In the book it’s not random. Baby Ruth is their father-son ritual from the very first day. Sixty years earlier, in the ruins of Trondham Abbey, Broom coaxed a tiny red demon out of the shadows with that exact candy bar, took a bite himself so the creature would trust him, and whispered:

“It’s a boy. Just a baby boy.”

Now, knowing he’s dying, Broom still buys his son’s favorite candy.

No big speeches. No dramatic farewell.

Just “I’m still your dad”

I love Liz's character development: she goes from being a human incinerator—the kind you’d use to burn trash —to becoming straight-up Kali.

Sometimes I feel like making those intro posts, but then I remember I'm the most boring and introverted person you'll ever meet, so... nah. I’m just a normal person who likes comics. Nothing special.

I assume this original character was based or inspired on Susan “Sue” Xiang. But, once again, the Hellboy adaptations present reprehensible behaviors, as she is a love interest for Hellboy, and it takes place during the 50s. Which means Hellboy was barely between 13/5 years old.

It is known that it is a younger version of Hellboy, but doing the math, he is literally a teenager.
