firm believe that not everything happens for a reason, sometimes things are just cruel. and they shouldn’t have happened and it’s not supposed to be a lesson because we never deserved such thing.
hm some people in my inbox got really mad at this specifically. nothing you can say will convince me that some of the pain and suffering we go through is our “fate” no, it isn’t
A University of Alberta study has found a link between vaping and impairment to lungs and heart function among young adults.
A University of Alberta study has found a link between vaping and impairment to lungs and heart function among young adults. Michael Stickland, professor of pulmonary medicine at the U of A, is leading the study that looks at people in their early 20s who have been using e-cigarettes or vapes for about three years. “What we saw was these early indications of impaired lung function and potentially exercise intolerance as well, which suggests that their lungs and hearts are not working as well as you’d expect them to,” explained Stickland. Participants in the study reported no cigarette or marijuana use and went through a traditional lung function test.

Can you read while dreaming?

Maybe I'm weird, but I've never had the slightest difficulty with reading text while dreaming. Not sure where that trope came from in the first place (though it did give us a very good episode of Batman: The Animated Series).
I used to lucid dream a lot and the easiest way for me to confirm I was in a dream was to try to read; if I couldn't read, I knew I was dreaming
The fact that my pet theory for the dragon prince that I had in season 1 and then dropped because it didn't seem like the show was going to go anywhere with it was then confirmed in the very last episode of the entire show is making me a little crazy.
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

I've been watching the dragon prince on netflix and the further I get into it the more I'm surprised it's rated 7+. I'm all for not restricting kids' media too much, but human sacrifice might be a tad much for 7 year olds.
Thinking about this more, and I feel like the only way they got away with that rating is because it has absolutely no sexual content or coarse language. There's not even suggestive jokes.
My question is, why is it okay for kids to see violence, but not hear vague hints about sex?

This is the quiz and I did not come up with it, credit goes to @iswearbyalltheflowers on this post.
Absolutely no judgment, I’m genuinely really curious and I figured more people would answer anonymously here than on the original post.
I don't read as much fic as I used to but one "tell" for non Canadians writing us, besides the etransfer, is the units you use to describe us measuring something. I hate to tell you this but The Chart is real and it's completely subconscious. Please abide
ETA the chart (or at least a version of it):
ETA2: we do use inches/miles in poetic ways ("he was lost in thought/miles away" or "his lips were a bare inch away").
Also, the length of a dick is in inches for SURE.
it is unfortunate that there's no reason for most people to remember high school chemistry because the best analogy I have found for "the amount of energy that it takes me to initiate a task, which can be higher than the amount of energy it takes to actually complete the task" is "activation energy" and it's not precisely perfect but
yeah. and you can even include "thing that reduces the barrier to doing the task" as a catalyst/enzyme
anyway. unfortunately this does not actually clarify anything for the average person. but #ToMe it works
I've just started rereading Network Effect and while I can understand why Amina was mad about Murderbot scaring off her boyfriend, it was 100% right. Lying about his age, giving her intoxicants he wasn't taking, and not wanting to hang out with her around her adults are huge red flags.
MurderbotI don't think we're ever told exactly how old Amina isJust this bit here where MB says she's a little under preservation legal adult ageWhich really could be anything from 15 to 20Though I imagine 16-17And this guy is 12 years older than herSo he's 27 at minimumWhich is so not cool
(prev tags for posterity)
Yeah, like... everything about that was skin-crawling. And Amena going "If he'd done anything I could have called for help with the feed" while the creep was actively getting her drunk (assuming alcohol was the only drug involved since it's not like Murderbot ever specifies) and pretending to be drunker than he was.
(he also didn't want to hang out with her around her friends)
Murderbot was absolutely 100% right it just mishandled the situation because it's terrible at actually communicating with people and years of working for a company that spies on people in the bedrooms / bathrooms has given it zero concept of anybody else's privacy, and also it inadvertently did the stereotypical "scary dad talking about having a shotgun and a shovel" routine almost verbatim. "If I thought he was going to hurt you I'd be disposing of his body" was really not the right thing to say to the almost-adult who is justifiably annoyed about this person who just came into her life a few months ago literally helicopter swarm of drones parenting her even if it's right about this particular situation.
“Musk talks about Mars as a lifeboat for humanity, which is among the very stupidest things that someone could say,” says Adam Becker, an astrophysicist and author of the book More Everything Forever, which outlines the messianic, sci-fi fantasies of the tech oligarchs. “There are so many reasons why it’s such a bad idea, and this is not about, ‘Oh, we’ll never have the technology to live on Mars.’ That’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is that Earth is always going to be a better option no matter what happens to Earth. Like, we could get hit with an asteroid the size of the one that killed off the dinosaurs, and Earth would still be more habitable. We could explode every single nuclear weapon, and Earth would still be more habitable. We could have the worst-case scenario for climate change, and Earth would still be more habitable. Any cursory examination of any of the facts about Mars makes it very clear.”
What You’ve Suspected Is True: Billionaires Are Not Like Us
I really like sci-fi stories where people have to go off and terraform a planet, or figure out how to rebuild civilization after some disaster, or ideally both. "The last ark-ship leaving Earth right before it becomes uninhabitable" sort of deal. But lately I've been coming around to this same idea, that it will always be more practical to try to save Earth than to try to start over elsewhere.
I was reading one story where the apocalypse was impossibly-rising oceans. Like, water is appearing from *waves hand* the Earth's crust or something, and literally all dry surface land on Earth is going to become underwater in X years. Part of the story was about a giant research project to invent FTL to send a few hundred humans to a nearby star which might have a habitable planet. You know what they were hoping to find? A planet with liquid water. Their plan was to descend from their starship and restart civilization using just the tools they brought with them, on a world with no life and no breathable air and the wrong gravity and the wrong temperate and the wrong sunlight and the wrong day-night cycle, just because it had liquid water. You know where else has liquid water? The flooded Earth you just abandoned. Instead of researching starship technology, you could have spent that time loading up all the same civilization-restarter tools into boats.
And this is really true of any futuristic apocalypse scenario. If you can terraform Mars to have a thick oxygen atmosphere, why not just do that to Earth? Even if you smash an ice comet into Earth and destroy basically everything, Earth will still be more habitable than Mars! It'll still have roughly the right atmospheric pressure, and magnetic field, and heat balance, and it'll still have whatever life the comet didn't kill... Same with a starshade to cool Venus. Same with excavating asteroids into city-stations. Same with abandoning Sol System entirely and heading to another star. If an ark-ship arrived in a new star system and found Earth-but-choked-by-climate-change, the crew would be ecstatic. They would never have thought to get that lucky. So why bother with the trip? Just stay and fix the damn Earth.
