Does Chara feel the same way towards humans as she feels towards monsters or is there something different?
This is an interesting question! I'm not quite sure if my answer is very good but I'll try any way!
We know that Chara is disgusted by the way monsters look. She is terrified of the fact that she is alone being the only human— this part, I don't think can translate to her behavior toward other humans. But while we will never see how she behaves toward her own kind, but she does give us some hints especially later in Chapter 2.
Lets judge based off of how she treats the only two monsters shes not scared of: Gaster and Asriel. Gaster is a skeleton (vaguely humanoid, and she pretty much admitted that that's the only reason she likes him) and Asriel is a child. In side stories, Chara seems to treat Asriel very softly, especially compared to when we actually see her in the massacre, but she doesn't feel a need to shield him from horrible things like most people do. This is most likely due to her own childhood trauma that I haven't gotten to yet in the story XD
Chara also never (intentionally) killed children in the massacre. Its not fully apparent now, but later you can see that most of the post-massacre population is now orphaned children. (Aimat hints to this). This fact kind of makes Gaster sacrificing Papyrus to the river kind of depressing haha... But then again, even if Gaster did know that, he might have done it anyway to prevent papyrus from seeing him die to a human. Idk, maybe.
The way Chara behaves toward Gaster is a much more interesting thing, however (and actually gives sort of an answer to your question). Y'know, cuz its not that crazy that Chara tends to spare children. Chara immediately latches on to Gaster when they first meet at the Student Party because he is a skeleton and remarks how similar they are, something that Chara is desperate for in a world full of monsters. Something familiar. She can't even bring herself to kill him most of the time. Does this mean she wouldn't kill a human? Well, she's still extremely aggressive with him despite enjoying his presence and doesn't seem to like the idea of letting him live.
This suggests that shes aggressive toward other humans. However! Chara is seen being cordial with toriel even though shes disgusted by her. this means that Chara knows how to behave "normally" for the most part. I think even if she has a tendency to be aggressive, that she can handle it quite well around other humans. Perhaps the underground had turned her from a little batty to absolutely homicidal.
And then.... There's my not-fully-canon answer that's up to viewer interpretation. Chara's train of thought and reasoning is NOT at all based in reality, (elaborated on more in later episodes) even when explaining her thoughts BEFORE the massacre. This could be because she is in an unreliable state and can't explain things very well that used to be perfectly sensible, or it could be that she has always been extremely mentally ill (and was just the worst person to end up falling underground lol).
Chara has mentioned that her human father was some kind of religious nut. Growing up in that environment, —whether or not she actually believed what he was saying— and then falling down into a hell-like place full of monsters? I feel like that'd cause a religious psychosis in someone who's not in their right mind.
But, as I said, that part of my analysis of Chara is mainly dependent on whether or not you want to believe that. For example, if you find the simplicity of chara being driven crazy by the underground OR you can be triggered by religious themes, etc., you may just want to believe in the first part of the analysis. I get that completely! I always like to offer different versions of my story and allow others to choose/ create what they would find the most interesting because... Idk i just like doing that? I think it makes the story more personal and when I'm writing, I understand that the reader is never going to see the story exactly the same way I do or agree with my decisions, so I think it makes it more creative to have multiple different interpretations that may or may not be canon. I like my stories (specifically BTA) to invite readers to indulge into it like a puzzle to solve.
WOW i had been putting this ask off for a long time but I had so much fun with it! Thank you!
"She was bipedal. . . but only ever limped on her right foot"
Chara looks a lot like me. I draw her similarly to how I draw myself and I imagine her voice, facial features, and stature to be similar to mine. This doesn't mean anything at all narratively because I'm not a serial killer LOL but it does kind of remind me of the purpose of video game MCs to reflect the player. These were somewhat unintentional design choices all made separately, until I stepped back and was like. Hm. that's me.
