Most effective presentation

While watching each of my peers present their communities and issues, each one had very strong points and each made me more interested in the subject at hand. If I was uneducated on one of the presentations, I became very interested and immediately learned more about the community. There was one presentation that stuck with me the most though. The presentation done today about pediatric doctors for kids with cancer really captivated me. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this career path is sadness because it deals with sick children dying everyday. If it were me treating a baby trying to save its life I don’t think I could ever recover, but her presentation revealed the pros of a field like this.

I never thought about it like this, but she made some very good points. Dealing with the loss of a patient and a child at that, can be extremely hard but it can also make you a better doctor in the long run and motivate you to become better so that you save more lives as a result. She made great use of pathos, logos, and ethos. I was drawn in from the moment she first spoke. I also admire her very much for wanting to follow in this career path since it can be very difficult most of the time.

I thought this was an interesting presentation as well because I don’t have too much knowledge on the subject. I also think she did a good job of targeting all of the rhetorical appeals!

Presentation

First off I just want to say how good all of the presentations were today. They all provided good genres and all of the campaign I believed were generally interesting. My personal favorite presentation was the one about natural cosmetics. I’m very sorry that I don’t remember the presenters name but none the less you had a great project 3. I really liked how the entire project was made in one portfolio so you could see the different genres and how they worked together. Other than the fact that she really promoted it well with great viral marketing and was able to get following she also was able to include the audience within her campaign. The act of being able to allow the visitors to leave testimonials and band together as a community was something very innovative and something I believe really helped her project. Also her delivery of the project was very cool and collected. She definitely knew what she was talking about and was able to explain all of her steps  in the presentation. Some honerable mentions that I also enjoyed were the save the bees presentation and the concussions presentation because he worked really hard  in distributing his project.

I also liked how all of the genres were located in one site to show how they all relate to each other. The way she made a platform for people outside the community to interact with members of the community is something I wish I could’ve done because it initiates discussion and is good for the overall campaign.

Presentation Review

First off I think everyone did a good job presenting their genres and it was interesting to see how everyone built off of the issues they wrote about in project 2. I think Rebecca’s presentation was the most effective because all of her genres were located on a single site. I was thinking of creating a website for my campaign originally but didn’t follow through with it. Having everything on one site makes everything more organized, and I also think it’s effective for reaching target audiences because they can find everything in one place. Her presentation centered around that site, and I liked how interactive she made it. I liked the idea of people being able to interact with members of her community and kind of become a part of that community as well. I personally didn’t have too much prior knowledge about natural makeup so i found the issue itself to be very interesting. I want to take a closer look at all of her genres to really learn something from them. I also think that since the topic is so interesting it makes people want to find out more about it which pulls in more views. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this presentation as well as everyone else’s!

A Student’s Perspective on Educational Neuroscience

As a student for the past 16 years, I’ve had so much information presented to me in various learning environments. However when I reached junior year of high school, I started to question how much I was really learning the information being taught. I’m definitely a procrastinator and I tend to leave studying to the last minute. The day before a test I attempt to “learn” the information that would be covered, but my “learning” was memorizing the material only to regurgitate it on the test the following day. Now that I’m finishing up my first year of college, I want to walk away from all of my courses knowing that I learned something that can help me in the future.

While I was researching the issue of applying educational neuroscience on school curriculum, I began to think about how this could really help to students to actually learn. I also started to wonder if other students questioned the same things I did. If you’re reading this and are wondering what educational neuroscience actually is it’s the combination of cognitive neuroscience (the study of how the brain learns, retains and uses information) and education. It is an emerging field so it isn’t 100% perfect. One of the commonly mentioned disadvantages of educational neuroscience mentioned in the sources was the difficulty in communication between neuroscientists and educators.  I think in order for the field to succeed, both neuroscientists and educators need to collaborate with and teach other things within their respective fields. Not all educators are experts on neuroscience and not all neuroscientists are experts on teaching. Both can learn from each other and improve their communication.

Although I’m not an education or neuroscience major, I still believe I’m involved with this issue because I’m a student. Students could also apply what they understand about educational neuroscience on their studying habits, and maybe even put a stop to procrastinating! Rome wasn’t built in a day and the same can be said for educational neuroscience. It’s a work in progress, but I think that as the field develops it could make a significant impact on the way students learn.

The overall message of this campaign is to increase awareness about slavery and invite people to join the cause in ending it. It seems as though these genres were created by an on-campus organization. The purpose behind their genres is to inform people about what they do within the organization as well as spreading the word about a meet up on Landis Green. The audience may be specific to just students, but it could also be for all the people who come and go on campus who are not students. Visual and written modes are used with the poster and chalk message. A print medium is used for the poster, and I consider the chalk-written message to be face-to-face. The poster appeals to the organization’s ethos since they are informing what they stand for; this could also appeal to the audience’s pathos as well especially if they have strong feelings about slavery. The chalk message appeals pathos because it could spark the audience’s interest to see what this meet-up will consist of and it also appeals to logos since it specifies when and where the meet-up will take place, The style/design of the poster is somewhat formal, it highlights four sections which could be the four main things the organization stands for. It presents the information in an organized and easy to follow manner. As for the style/design of the chalk message, it is informal but uses a drawing to try to grab the attention of the audience. I think the poster is effective, however I don’t find the chalk message to be the same.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is the technique of spreading an idea through word of mouth. I use the word idea and not advertisement because viral marketing and advertising is not the same thing. An advertisement focuses on a product while having the purpose of increasing production sales. Advertisements can be placed in newspapers, magazines, commercials, etc, with a goal of consumption. There is more momentum, power, and emotion behind producing a viral marketing campaign. It also has to have the capability to be distributed similar to an advertisement, however, like I said before, the word of mouth is how viral marketing can exist. It is commonly said that this form of marketing produces ideas that, “spread like viruses” (Baekdal, “7 Tricks to Viral Marketing”). After reading the assigned articles, I understand that viral marketing plays with emotions, produces debate, and makes us think. According to many of the articles, it could and should be humorous in order to arouse laughter and beams amongst their audiences. 

This is how viral marketing works. Someone or multiple people decide to campaign for something. They produce this campaign without spending millions of dollars on advertising. These messengers have to think critically about their message they are going to produce and within what environment they want it to be distributed. The viral marketing then spreads through verbal communication, until it is recognizable or gets the message across, NOT until a product is sold. I found it interesting that an important aspect within viral marketing is telling a story. This adds to the idea that the messengers are making the campaign relatable, persuasive, and engaging. To sum up what I have said, viral marketing works when the message, or media, is funny, controversial, impactful, and resourceful. The messengers and producers need to know the hottest things at the right times in order to evoke responses. Therefore, this marketing method they work when they utilize social media and other popular ideas.

I really like your perspective on viral marketing! It’s more about spreading a message rather than a certain product. I think it’s essential for a viral marketing campaign to make it’s viewers feel some type of emotion because that is essentially what drives its success!

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is simply what it sounds like: using the Internet to market a product or idea. It is a certain technique or marketing via the use of social networking sites in hopes to spread awareness of a certain thing. It can be created in many forms for the ease of sharing. They can be visual, audio, text-based, and even interactive like a game. Largely, viral marketing requires a messenger, a clear message, and environment. Viral marketing will never be successful without proper “seeding” of the campaign. It must be on the right mediums so that the right people will find and distribute it, releasing the information to the world. It works when it’s funny, relates to the audience, uplifting, useful, controversial, dramatic, and engaging. If done well, people like new things provided through dramatic and unrealistic humor and can be utilized well in videos, memes, and gifs. Incentives also help launch certain campaigns, causing people to want to be a part of it. The 7 tricks to viral marketing are: 1. Make people feel something, 2. Do something unexpected, 3. Do not try to make advertisements (that suck), 4. Make sequels, 5. Allow sharing, downloading, and embedding, 6. Connect with comments, and 7. Never restrict access. It works when it is done well and done right. If not, it will be unsuccessful and can even be damaging to your campaign if the idea is not gotten across correctly.

Viral Marketing

Viral Marketing is a technique used to increase brand awareness and/or product sales. The purpose of using such a technique is to initiate a viral phenomenon through social media. Once one person sees it, they’ll repost/retweet/link to the ad for their followers/friends to see, and then their friends/followers will repost it for their followers. In order to create a successful viral marketing campaign, one must utilize the appropriate mediums to supplement the distribution of the ad. This is referred to as seeding, and it is a crucial factor in the process. Some campaigns who are deserving of going viral don’t because they don’t use the mediums and genres appropriate for their message. With a viral marketing campaign you want your viewers to feel something from it since this will make them want to share it with others. “Feeling something” can be various emotions like happiness, anger, scared, etc. Since almost everyone is on some form of social media, things can spread rather quickly but this depends on how it is delivered as well as what the audience does with it. Some of the best viral marketing campaigns have been a series of related and recognizable ads. Viral marketing could be thought of as the spread of a good, purposeful virus.

Of the 31 pieces of art in this Buzzfeed article, my favorite is the veritable wheel of cheese. I like this particular piece because at this point in time I am very hungry and I’ve never seen anything like it. The purpose of this art composition is to provide information about the different types of cheeses as well as their characteristics such as their texture and what animal they are from. The audience is people who like eating cheese and potentially chefs. The rhetorical appeal used in this piece is logos (and maybe pathos). The design is very easy to follow since the cheeses are represented by an image and are categorized according to texture and where they come from. Each cheese is labeled on the exterior of the wheel and each section is colored like the cheese that is labeled. The middle and inner ring of the circle feature various shades of orange/yellow. I think this piece could inspire my creativity for Project 3 in terms of providing information in a fun yet organized manner.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 album could be adapted into a movie musical based on the track listing and the content of the songs. The first song on the album is titled “Welcome To New York,” so the movie should start out overlooking Manhattan from a birds eye perspective. A female will be the lead character in the piece, and before getting into the song the writer should introduce this character and give the audience a little bit of her background. This character has a reputation for going on lots of dates (similar to Swift), so when this idea is introduced in a scene “Blank Space” should be performed since Taylor explained the song as being from the perspective of the character the media made her to be. The storyline should try to be as close to the journey that is illustrated through music as possible. There are a handful of love inspired songs, so there could be one love interest or many.

My favorite story that is a series of books turned into a series of movies is Harry Potter. There are several characters the reader meets throughout the seven books, however the three main characters are Harry, Ron and Hermione. The setting varies according to whatever adventure the trio are on but they can be found most of the time in Hogwarts. Though the setting of the story can vary it mainly takes place in England. Of the series my favorite is Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, which is the third installment in the series. In this story Harry, Ron and Hermione have to deal with the high volume of Dementors around Hogwarts due to the escape of a prisoner named Sirius Black, who also happens to be Harry’s godfather. As for the central conflict, Harry is upset at first after being told by people what Sirius has been accused of doing but once he meets him and understands why his parents chose Sirius as his godfather he wants to help him not get sent back to Azkaban. The purpose of this story is to entertain the reader, and the audience is people between the ages of 10 and 19 (older adults can read these books as well). The author, J.K. Rowling uses both pathos and logos in her compositions. The medium is print and digital since people can purchase either the hard copy or a digital copy to view on their technological devices. There are several chapters in each book.

My issue for Project 3 is Common Core within the teaching community. I think a Narrative genre would benefit my campaign because it could help make people like students and parents realize that Common core doesn’t only effect teachers. If I told a story of how I’ve moved all my life and Common Core prevented any holes from forming in my education, that might help a parent/student realize how it can be relevant to them. It could also evoke a lot of pathos and ethos. The BBG mentioned that by telling a personal story, that i could help establish that I know what I am talking about and that i am a reliable source because I have experienced. I also think it would help establish pathos because I can easily add emotional appeal to something that has personally happened to me. Overall thought, I intend to use Informative and Persuasive genres most.

Adding a personal perspective to this project would establish your ethos while also targeting the audience’s pathos. I think using a narrative genre in your project 3 would be a different and creative way to communicate your message!

Narrative Genres

A narrative genre is a story such as one passed on over time or even a eulogy. Narratives are a part of every day life and help relate things to our lives. We read stories of issues in magazines and on billboards and we see them in commercials and news stories. The issue I researched and wrote about is that of problems with recruitment and retainment of nurses leading to shortages and understaffing in the nursing community. A narrative genre would help my issue in spreading awareness and understanding in a simpler and more relatable way. Sharing personal accounts or real examples of things, highlighting pathos, are what get people to listen and work together to solve issues. A narrative genre would be a useful genre for my third project due to the ability to inform people about this issue as well as to introduce the career to them as a real possibility for their future. There is just something special about a person’s story that makes you listen and want to help. Showing people that this is a real issue that directly affects everyone around them will help grow awareness and draw young people into the nursing field. I could create a video of nurse testimonials speaking on the limited nurses in the world as well as how wonderful the nursing field is.

I agree with what you say about how the use of a narrative genre helps the audience understand in a simpler and more relatable way. If you were to use a narrative genre for project 3, I think it would be a great element in your overall presentation especially if it is from a member of the nursing community!
