I have adored the gladioli in the cut flower farm this year. With a mixed bag if was a surprise every time a new stem opened. Spent some time lifting all the corms to dry out and store ahead of winter. Look at all those babies! Its another stunning day on the farm and I'm pondering what to do with all the poultry now there's an #avianflu prevention zone in place. Luckily the schedule 1 published on the 3rd doesn't require netted housing if birds are outside - YET. Outside housing - at this time - just has to fence them into an area and away from bodies of water. BUT a new rule is to separate chickens from all waterfowl. 😱 so problem solving that, with my thoughts on the subject in today's video coming out this evening. . . I like to take time out every few days to go wandering and exploring around the farm. Nature has a funny way of creating magical things to discover. Today I found these ... don't they look like Haribo? Not sure i should scoff them though! Lots of fungi out and about but these are my favourite find. . . . Every poultry individual on my farm is currently a freeloader. I haven't had an egg in WEEKS. However, the majority of my chickens are ancient, named and basically pets. The quail are seasonal layers and now the hours of night have extended, won't lay until spring. And the other POL ducks and hens? They must be hiding them! . . I have to say, I don't really mind though. Its not as if my farm is running on egg income. We're yet to have frost so I'm holding onto the joy of the last flowers. The straw flowers have been amazing this year; SO plentiful. And the dahlias I grew from seed have been incredible. I didn't expect so many flowers from plants sown only this May. I've been so up and down about whether Eve was pregnant. I love running JJ (my billy) with the herd but the downside is not knowing when the ladies have been served. The developed and udder but then it began to dry up again. Her backend isn't puffy either. BUT she has begun to bloom the past couple of weeks and today I finally saw some baby movement. Always sowing! I'm gradually getting better at successional sowing. With autumn here I'm moving out of the garden and into the polytunnel to provide a few farm crops overwinter. I've got herbs and about 500 lettuce heads. Thought I'd throw in some radish too. Normally a one month crop, I'm interested to see how long it takes at this time of year. Today our lovely piggoes, Hyacinth and Margaret, moved out of their temporary enclosure to the field. After a few zaps from the electric fence, they settled in and even went to bed in the pig ark nice and early. I hurdled them in just for peace of mind overnight. . From now on they'll be rootling about clearing the area and pooping to make the area ready for the pick-your-own pumpkin patch next year. Then when they're old enough these lovely LB sows will be bred to help continue the rare breed line. .
