Hm.  It would be unfair not to share the bounty, so Arturia gives him a brief nod before separating some of the rice and stew into a separate bowl and slides it over.  A spoon is already tucked into the steaming bowl. “Enjoy,” she says simply; a brief and not entirely unintentional command.  Habit.

Are there any characters that you love, but simply cannot RP?

ooc; Ahhh, this is a lovely question, thank you!  My reply got a bit long, so it’ll be under a cut (once I edit it, since it won’t let me post it straight up with a readmore…)

Within the context of the Fate series, there’s probably a number of them.  My personal preference is usually to tackle characters I find somewhat challenging but not entirely out of my league yet and push myself forward.  I really love feeling like I’m getting better at tackling my own weaknesses in my writing, but it takes time.

There are two major “types” of characters I find myself deeply lacking in the ability to play to the level of analysis and accuracy that I desire.  The Ruler/Oresama and the feminine lady.

One, the “Ruler” or “Oresama” - the loud, the indulgent, the one who demands all because they deserve it whether they really think that on the inside or not, and command you.  I’m not saying everyone in this category is arrogant, but either in deed or personality or sheer demand they are rulers and they expect you to follow.  These are also often sexually open and unrestrained characters, which is something I find even more difficult to handle in my writing.  Characters like Gilgamesh, Alexander, Medb, Ozymandius…

“But Arturia is a ruler, she’s the King of Knights!”  Yes!  But she is a very different kind of king compared to the powerful people listed above.  There’s a reason Alexander dismissed her and Gilgamesh is so entertained by her doomed nature.

Two, the feminine lady / feminine individual.  The sweet, the soft, the gentle.  I love these women, I love these characters, but I cannot write them effectively enough.  I don’t know what to do.  I don’t know how to be.  It feels absolutely alien to me.  On top of that, I get nervous playing women in public roleplay communities because of past experiences, but I think the roleplaying community (I hope) is turning their nose up less and less at female characters and, ideally, looking less at them as “just there so X can ship with this character they like.”  Characters like Cardia (Code Realize), Guinevere, Tamamo …in some ways Sakura Matou, but I find myself able to write her (and have in the past) because of everything that’s going on inside her.  

“But Arturia can be feminine!”  She can be, but by nature and upbringing, this is less of a constant factor.  Femininity is also something that can bring her extreme discomfort and unease, especially if it’s around someone like Gilgamesh.

I think if I worked hard at it, I have a chance at portraying some of these characters (it’s in my nature to be contrary and try my damnedest to do something well when I hear I can’t, even if it’s me, myself, doing it.)  But I don’t think that I’d ever do it as well as other people, and I am mostly content with that as long as I can improve my writing.

To those who write very feminine characters (female, nonbinary or male) and to those who write the oresama/ruler types: I applaud, respect and am inspired by you.

Headcanon(s);

Most things I will prefer to reveal in writing itself rather than post headcanons, etc. but I think it’s good to occasionally jot some things down this early on while I try to un-rust my characterization.  I think it’s a given that this interpretation of Arturia will be a mix of Fate/Nasuverse + Arthurian legend, sometimes leaning a little more heavily on the latter.

Topic: Guinevere, Love, and...very briefly, some mention of best buddy Lancelot

Does a monster know how to love?  Perhaps Sir Kay was right in what she was.

Arturia looks at women more than men for love, if at all, and even then she’s somewhat alien about it - presenting as a man, as a king, led to conversations and expectations that groomed certain thoughts and expectations.  It’s not that she isn’t capable of finding men attractive.  She finds both men and women appealing, but women are what feels more ‘natural’ with the mindset of her roles.  That isn’t to say any orientation is more or less natural.  This is just what feels that way to Arturia, who was raised in a very particular kind of environment.

Her role is to be a king.  Her role is to be a man.  Thus, it’s only natural that she take on a wife one day and love her as a husband would.

If only she’d known how a husband cared for his wife.  She was a wonderful king for Guinevere, someone Guinevere was known for truly loving as “a king”, but as a man, as a lover, as her husband...Arturia was a disappointment.  Thinking that being loved as a king was the same as being loved as a proper husband, Arturia had some vast misunderstandings about the satisfaction of her wife and Guinevere’s needs.

But, even so, Arturia loved her.  She was beautiful, lovely, and every moment spent with her was an awkward but beloved joy.  She couldn’t communicate it properly, the love that bloomed inside her, but it wasn’t that it did not exist.

No, Guinevere and Lancelot were two people she loved very much.  In Guinevere, her love for a wife.  In Lancelot, her love for a best friend.

So, one day, she knew.  It didn’t stay a secret forever, but Arturia did not speak up.  As long as they could be happy together, in secret, she could not stop them.

...but once it was made public, a King had to do as Kings would.

And those deeds would burn inside her forever.
