i don't even know how to properly convey how fucking insane and disappointing that is

like i knew to not expect much from the movie, given nolan's blatant disrespect and disregard towards Greece and it's history and traditions, and also the disrespect and disregard towards the tradition of the Odyssey and it's adaptations in itself, the architecture, the clothing, the battle armour, even the ships all either sourced from another culture or just downright being something he callously made up to satisfy his own weird needs

and now this??? specially given the whole political aspect and climate between Iran and United States??? you have THE star of the modern generation, arguably the biggest name in your crew for your younger audience, attending an hours long event with an illegally sourced, housed in ENGLAND even, millennia old artifact that has nothing to do with the story that you are telling and is also from the country hers country is constantly attacking and breaking ceasefire agreement, it's just tone death and crass, and just as bad as when margot robbie wore the Taj Mahal Necklace to promote "WUNTERING HEIGHTS".

Now that Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is out, we can wait for the EPIC: The Musical movie, and then have to deal with people saying "We just got The Odyssey, why are we getting another adaptation?"

And all the people complaining about Lupita Nyong'o playing Helen are gonna have their heads spinning at Puerto Rican Odysseus, Polites wearing glasses, Black Eurylochus, Black Antinous, Black Ares, British Circe, and British Hermes.

And all the people complaining about Robert Pattinson Antinous saying "You're pining for a daddy you didn't even know, like some sniveling bastard" are gonna have to deal with the What Saga and Holy Moly.

Can't wait.

Also while I'm talking about the Odyssey:

What a weird choice to make Clytemnestra Helen’s twin sister. Like I get it, Lupita is gorgeous and you don’t want to hire another actress.

But the fact that Helen is the most beautiful woman in the world is kinda...essential for the plot?

It is the whole reason why Paris chose Aphrodite in the golden apple contest, why he kidnapped her, why the whole trojan war started.

And you're telling me that there is another woman who looks exactly like her?? So Helen is NOT the most beautiful woman in the world ?

It makes no sense, and there was no good reason to not hire another beautiful black actress to play Clytemnestra.

Reasons to boycott Nolan's The Odyssey (that I know of so far):

They shot in the illegally occupied Western Sahara as reported by Middle East Eye (thanks to @fuckyeahdavidandyonatan for bringing that up)

They dumped their props into a protected area of the Italian sea after shooting (thanks to @godslop for finding the article in English)

Zendaya wearing looted 3000 years old Iranian earrings for the premiere of the movie + having her stylist fly on a private jet just to get her a dress for the premiere in London

No Greek actors in a movie about Greek heritage

While people mentioned that Anne Hathaway was flown in to the set every day, apparently it was not on a private jet but on a helicopter that was being used anyway to fly in equipment.

None of these things are new in Hollywood or exclusive to the Odyssey, its director or its actors, but I do think we as audience should start holding Hollywood accountable when it disrespects our culture, heritage, environment, especially when it's movies that are this big and have a huge budged that would allow for more conscious choices.

The “nobody” scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever pun—it’s a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isn’t nobody—he’s Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.

The “nobody” scene highlights both Odysseus’s cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. It’s a foundational aspect of Odysseus’s character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.

A lot of people are criticizing Nolan’s Odyssey for valid reasons or whatever but I’m here with the only hot take that matters:

How dare he do the Mediterranean Sea dirty like this.

What is this foggy morning in the middle of winter bullshit. What is the northern Atlantic doing in fucking Greece. Why is the brightest color here a desaturated steel blue. How could anyone in good conscience look at such a gorgeous body of water and dare to use such boring ass frames of her.

Look at these images I stole from Google. Look at that color. Those rocks. That shit is why even after being sexually harassed as a child by countless Italian men up and down the entire fucking boot of Italy I still remember visiting it fondly. It’s like the world’s most delicious, chewy fucking turquoise and green and blue jelly and just looking at these photos makes me want to put it into a syringe and shoot it into my fucking eyes.

Go visit the Mediterranean. Fall off a dock into the gorgeous water and scratch your leg frantically swimming away from a beautiful jellyfish. Get some kind of terrifying infection from the scratch that violently swells the whole thing up with puss but the wound ends up kind of looking like an angry face so you nickname it ‘Jim’ and try to lance it with a plastic butter knife while in the line for customs. I can’t recommend it enough.

People saying The Odyssey is the most USA film ever made due to it's depiction of war don't realise how accurate they are since the ONLY reason Nolan was even able to film in OCCUPIED WESTERN SAHARA is because TRUMP recognised Morocco's ILLEGAL sovereignty of Western Sahara in 2020, legitimised a 50 year illegal occupation so Morocco would normalise ties with ISRAEL.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.
