I get really confused when americans, when talking about universal health care are like ‘yeh but it’s not free sweaty :) :) you have to pay it through taxes :) so gotcha!!’

and I’m like ….???? That’s the whole point??? Everyone pays their fair share so that no one has to be turned away because they don’t have insurance??? And no one has to set up a Fundraiser page just so that they DONT DIE???? So people don’t put off going to the doctor because they’re scared of going bankrupt?? Because healthcare is a RIGHT and should be free at the point of access?!?

2010. I’d been feeling a bit ill. Work was going nuts, so I figured it was stress.  Pretty good call considering a week later work fired their entire IT department (of which I was part).    

But then I got sicker.  And it turned out I had cancer.

Burkitt’s lymphoma, stage 4a. It had spread into my brain and spinal column. 90% cure rate, but I needed nine months of chemo - and not the outpatient chemo, nope, talking multiple week stays per round of the magrath protocol.  Drugs were about 10k an IV bag.  I was unemployed.  And there were complications.

Thankfully I live in a country with universal healthcare.   And it didn’t cost me a goddamn cent to save my life.  I’m now officially past the five year mark to move me from “remission” to “Cured”.

I’ve lived in a universal healthcare country my entire life. And I’ve seen the US system in action.  Your system is fucked. Straight up fucked. You’ve got fucking Dickensian shit going on there, people dying on streets from preventable causes or ending up broke for breaking a hip.   Your health insurance companies have you by the balls and people like you are begging them to squeeze harder.  What the actual fuck is wrong with you?

Happened when I was 32.  I’d spent 14 years of my life paying those fucking taxes that funded the system that saved my life.    And guess what?   Now I’m cured, I’m…Back..at work..And have been for several years…earning waaaay more money and paying back into the system. This shit doesn’t exist in a vacuum, dickhead.  You’re not feeding some imaginary pack of leeches, you’re paying forward on your own damned healthcare so you don’t have to argue with an insurance company while trying to heal.

First off. Sorry for spelling and grammar errors since I am still woozy haha. Soooooo... those who know me personally know I've been battling cancer for a while. Even longer than I knew since it went undiagnosed for a hecka long time. I am home now and recovering but still pretty rocky from day to day. I've been... quiet on most social media, especially after my inbox was flooded with some none too nice messages haha, but that's in the past and I tend to ignore my inbox as of now (sorry to those who are nice and trying to talk to me). I am gonna try to be better about responding and checking. It's just been difficult to bring myself to do it on top of all this. But my tumblr family helped me years ago when my dad died and I know even though this site gets a bad rap because of drama that the majority of those on here are sweet and kind. It's always easiest to hear and see and feel the ugly side of things but that's unfortunately because they tend to shout the loudest. I will never forget the love I have received and felt from those on this site when I needed it most. This place is full of talent and compassion the likes the world has never seen. Thank you for being you. Thank you to those who create. Thank you to those who admire those creations. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for creating a space that can feel like home to those who dont have one. Thank you to those who fight for the ones who cant. And thank you to everyone for being yourself. I know life can be hard, things are tough and scary, but there are people who care even when it doesnt seem like it. There are days where I feel small and i dont know if i can move. I am on bedrest and I am not supposed to even go to the restroom by myself. I know I am a burden. I know I am not at my best. I know that getting better has and is putting me and my loved ones in a financial situation. I also know that I can always find art, or fics, or inspiration on here. I am the first person to worry about posting things and will back out of it, but to those out there with the same fear of putting your work or thoughts or anything onto this site, do it. It might not make the biggest splash or be a huge hit, some people might not like it, but there will be someone who does. Make their day. You got this. I know you do. Focus on that. And you will get through. I know I have to keep telling myself that. This isnt a "oh woe is me I have cancer post" this isnt a "I'm bigger and better and a warrior against cancer" post either. This is a, be a warrior for you post. Screw what is going to have you down because there will always be something but there will always be people on here who care and will support you. If you need someone I know I am here at the very least. Dont be afraid to reach out, and if you are afraid dont forget that we all are but that together things can get a bit better. I hope everyone has a good day and remembers that they are doing better than they know. I wont beg for financial help but I do have a GoFundMe for my financial assistance in paying for my medical bills but do not feel obligated to help.
