I have a theory that each house handled it differently:

Gryffindor would, of course, let them brave the corridors cluelessly, figuring it out on their own. Ravenclaw’s would probably have to memorize a map before even arriving. Hufflepuff probably had maps handed out, and Slytherins were most likely taught by their parents.
