A few days ago, someone brought up an interesting point that a big issue with this current story line for FitzSimmons is whether or not we can trust the writers.
A lot of Fitz fans are getting REALLY tired of watching him be the show’s emotional punching bag. They haven’t allowed him to have a single moment of happiness since season one.
Every other person on the team has found their little moments of happiness, even Jemma when she fell in love with Will. They all got their moments where they could say “Okay, my life isn’t ALL bad.”
Everyone except Fitz. The writers have effectively made him this show’s number one emotional punching bag. No matter what he does, things end up worse for him.
On top of that, they’ve wound his entire source of happiness up in Jemma, and she’s consistently making him a very unhappy person.
They’re not allowing him to find his happiness elsewhere. That gets VERY annoying to watch. Being a great guy isn’t a bad thing, but this show is perpetuating the horrible stereotype that if you’re a great person then that means you must suffer while everyone else gets to be happy.
Watching Fitz suffer is NOT fun, but the writers have made him frequently suffer since the beginning of season two. It doesn’t help that there are viewers out there who believe he should continue to sacrifice his feelings because that’s just the kind of person he is.
Considering how they’ve written Fitz, I have absolutely ZERO trust in the writers when it comes to the FitzSimmons relationship. It feels like this is going down the path of so many other ships before it, where he’ll have to sit there, sacrificing his feelings for Jemma forever until she chooses him, at which point he’ll be so ecstatic that she finally granted him the great privilege of her love that he’ll conveniently forget all of the hell she put him through.
That scenario happens more often than not on television these days, and it looks like that’s where they’re taking it. Writers are consistently treating the feelings of male characters like they are not as important as the female characters.
Like the truest devotion of love a man can show is to sit there and wait to finally be picked, while the woman’s truest devotion of love is to eventually pick him if she feels like it.
It is extremely likely that when Jemma and Fitz do get together, and let’s face it everyone THEY WILL, the relationship is going to be extremely unbalanced, where he spent the entire time fighting for her and she spent almost none of it fighting for him.
And before I get the usual “She isn’t obligated to return his feelings” then please stfu because that’s not what this is about. Whether or not she should feel obligated is NOT the question, because we know with certainty that she feels the same way that he does.
This isn’t a maybe here, this isn’t a question of obligation, Jemma is in love with Fitz. But the people who think that she shouldn’t have to express her love to the same extent are full of shit.
Just applying that broken logic to real life is utter nonsense.
If YOU were in love with someone, and that someone loved you, and you kept expressing your love while they did nothing at all, would you feel like you love each other equally simply because they say they love you? I seriously doubt it!
If on your anniversary, you buy your love a gift that you think is just perfect because it represents how you feel and what they mean to you, are you just going to be fine with them doing nothing at all in return? Again, I seriously doubt it!
If Jemma wasn’t in love with Fitz then I would 100% agree that she doesn’t need to feel obligated to do a thing. But when you love someone, a gesture of love isn’t an obligation. It’s a genuine expression of what you feel and what they mean to you.
They are BOTH in love, but apparently to a lot of people out there, Fitz is the only one of them who is required to express that love because that’s the kind of person he is. Jemma being in love with Fitz should not be treated like a privilege.
A lot of people have the mindset that Jemma being in love with him should be all he needs, but because Fitz is Fitz, he’s the only one of them who needs to express it. Which is such complete bullshit.
And that is why I have no faith in the writers right now, because that outcome has a very real chance of happening here, simply because it’s happened since season two.
Call me unreasonable, but I think a guy as great as Fitz deserves to be happy. He deserves to be with someone who will express their love for him not out of obligation, but because it’s what they feel and they want him to know that.
And Jemma, despite being in love with him, is not doing that. It’s not a matter of her being required to express it, it’s a matter of her WANTING to express it. When you’re in love with someone, it’s actual work to not show it.
I hope the writers take FitzSImmons down a balanced path this season, because so far, despite both of them being in love, Fitz is the only one who has actually expressed it to the one he loves. He is the only one who has had to fight to be with the woman he loves. Every time Jemma has wanted Fitz, he’s been there. The same can’t be said for every time Fitz has wanted Jemma.
That imbalance is infuriating to watch.
