Serious post I would like people to spread!
This is Naomi Schwartz, she is a 14-year-old girl from Palm Beach Florida who is battling a rare form of cancer which requires a bone marrow transplant. She is mixed race, her mother is a brown Puerto Rican woman and her father is Ashkenazi Jewish, and as a result, currently has no matches in her family or in bone marrow databases. Naomiās family ran a drive to try to find a match for her, but thatās no guarantee she will find one. I thought I would use my platform here to encourage people or people you know, especially with a similar background to Naomi, to register on bethematch.org.
A very important bone marrow donor drive-thru event is being held Saturday for a local teen. Earlier this year, 14-year-old Naomi Schwartz w

I donāt usually add onto posts but I would like to say that I recently had a bone marrow transplant due to cancer as well. I learned a lot about bone marrow transplants due to this and itās something that was totally off my radar until I was in it.Ā The Bone Marrow donor pool is extremely white. On average a white person has a 77% chance of finding a match in the pool, it drops significantly for people of different ethnicities. My specific āwhite europeanā genetics made my chance personally 93% and because my sister wasnāt a match mine came from the registry and they were aĀ āperfectā match, this literally saved my life. I hope dearly that Naomi can find a donor, I also hope that you consider sending a away for a kit if you can and especially if you can help widen the donor pool. Itās super easy, and it means life or death forĀ those of us handed a very difficult kind of cancer or other rare diseases.Ā
This is from the be the match site giving the average stats for people by ethnicity:Ā
Relevant to Naomi, It said in the article that people with a mixed ethnic background have a 15% chance of finding a donor match, also!
All it takes is a quick and easy sample of your DNA through a swab test. Through 5 simple steps, you can join Australia's Donor Registry and
Many bone marrow donor registries also look internationally. In Australia you can sign up at Strength To Give.

2: an infographic with the header, āLikelihood of finding a Matched Adult Donor on the Be The Match RegistryĀ®ļø by Patient Ethnicity*ā. the note at the bottom reads, ā*Patients are most likely to match an adult donor of their own ethnic background.ā the infographic shows the following statistics:
African American or Black - 23%
Asian or Pacific Islander - 41%
Hispanic or Latino - 46%
[Native American] or Alaska Native - 57%
White - 77%]
Iāve been keeping up with whatās going on w/ Naomi and havenāt seen any update since her family held the potential bone marrow donors event on the 5th. But Iāll let you all know when I do. Aside from a direct link to bethematch.org thereās also a text link that can help you get started by texting Hope4naomi at 61474

hey what's up with the "!" in fandoms? i.e. "fat!" just curious thaxxx <3
I have asked this myself in the past and never gotten an answer.
Maybe today will be the day we are both finally enlightened.
woodsgotweird said: man i just jumped on the bandwagon because i am a sheep. i have no idea where it came from and i ask myself this question all the time
Maybe someone made a typo and it just got out of hand?
I kinda feel like panic!at the disco started the whole exclamation point thing and then it caught on around the internet, but maybe they got it from somewhere else, IDK.
The world may never knowā¦
Maybe itās something mathematical?
Iāve been in fandom since *about* when Panic! formed and the adjective!character thing was already going strong, pretty sure it predates them.
Itās a way of referring to particular variations of (usually) a character ā dark! Will, junkie!Sherlock, et cetera. I have suspected for a while that it originated from some archive system that didnāt accommodate spaces in its tags, so to make common interpretations/versions of the characters searchable, people started jamming the words together with an infix.
(Lately Iāve seen people use theĀ ! notation when the suffix isnāt the full name, but is actually the second part of a common fandom portmanteau. This bothers me a lot but it happens, so itās worth being aware of.)
āBang pathsā (! is called a ābang"when not used for emphasis) were the first addressing scheme for email, before modern automatic routing was set up. If you wanted to write a mail to the Steve here in Engineering, you just wrote āSteveā in the to: field and the computer sent it to the local account named Steve. But if it was Steve over in the physics department you wrote it to phys!Steve; the computer sent it to the āphysā computer, which sent it in turn to the Steve account. To get Steve in the Art department over at NYU, you wrote NYU!art!Steve- your computer sends it to the NYU gateway computer sends it to the āartā computer sends it to the Steve account. Etc. (āBang"s were just chosen because they were on the keyboard, not too visually noisy, and not used for a huge lot already).
It became pretty standard jargon, as I understand, to disambiguate when writing to other humans. First phys!Steve vs the Steve right next to you, just like you were taking to the machine, then getting looser (as jargon does) to reference, say, bearded!Steve vs bald!Steve.
So Iām guessing alternate character version tags probably came from that.
100% born of bang paths. fandom has be floating around on the internet for six seconds longer than there has been an internet so early users just used the jargon associated with the medium and since itās a handy shorthand, we keep it.
Absolutely from the bang pathsāsaw people using them in early online fandom back in 1993 for referring to things.
people that hate courtney are right
Please don't be mad..... I actually have two Alenoah fic ideas.
Ya want some mint?
i think gen z ppl need to stop trying to moderate social mediaā which is impossible to moderateā and just go on forums already. āthis is for mlm, wlw dniā bruh iām telling you, if you discover mlm forums youāll go bananas. everyone there will be mlm, i promise. this is genuinely friendly advice. stop wasting your time trying to control your twitter and tik tok, it wonāt work because itās designed to not be controlled.
Iāve said it before but the loss of forums in place of homogenized mass social media is a huge blow to the development of communities, and trying to implement forum rules, logic & expectations on social media is doomed to failure and just results in unnecessary hostility and argument.
