Wahoo! Sneak peek of my piece for this year's @seaunseenzine : Sargassum crab, surrounded by (you'll never guess it hahah) sargassum seaweed <3
Would anyone like some bird facts from my brain and also my revision for tomorrow’s exam? Interact with this post if you would like some bird facts from my brain and also my revision
@brunciii I’m afraid we didn’t study this specifically, but I would hazard a guess that their air sacs would be more akin to fish, in assisting with buoyancy and staying at desired depths when swimming.
I can tell you that penguins have the supracoracordieus muscle that flighted birds use to increase the speed of the wing going back up when in flight - likely used for a similar motion when swimming
Project Hail Mary was so fucking good and I'm so glad I knew nothing about it before watching it other than 'it's sci-fi and Ryan Gosling is there'
New 'scimitar-crested' Spinosaurus species discovered in the central Sahara
by University of Chicago Medical Center
A paper published in Science describes the discovery of Spinosaurus mirabilis, a new spinosaurid species found in Niger. A 20-person team led by Paul Sereno, Ph.D., Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago, unearthed the find at a remote locale in the central Sahara, adding important new fossil finds to the closing chapter of spinosaurid evolution...

remember this from forever ago? Our buddy is finally ready to take flight :D
What do you guys call these sorts of monsters?
(image; the licker from Resident Evil, the monster from A Quiet Place, the future predator from Primeval)
Super fast quadrupedal predators, often with a 'blind but can hear you super well' gimmick, with this ultra-thin apelike bauplan (other examples may include the vampires from Priest and the super fast headcrab zombies from Half Life 2, and many more besides, but the 3 examples above have the nicest images).
This sorta thing does not have an official name, should we make one? I've been calling these like "scrumblies" and "scrimbly scrunglos" for so long and we need a better name than that.
So my friend @barksbog says that the Licker from Resident Evil was likely the first of these, so I have nicknamed them 'lickalikes' (licker lookalikes).
@matchlocks gives us 'funny creatures' and 'lovable animals' - I agree with both of these terms however they may be confusing if these creatures are considered alongside other lovable or funny entities
@gingerjaydraws gives us 'slenderbeasts', as they are beasts which are slender, and also the ever famous 'slenderman' has an eyeless human head much like these beasts
@santeri-surkea went for Leggy Boys, and we cannot deny these boys are sure leggy
@thechillsquid gives us Listeners, which is very apt for the ones that echolocate, and very ominous
I WILL NOW PUT THIS TO A VOTE;
What do we call these things?
Scrimbly Scrunglos
Lickerlikes
Funny Creatures
Lovable Animals
Slenderbeasts
Leggy Boys
Listeners
I will make the poll short (only 3 days long) and if we get more name ideas we can get more options and put out a longer poll. A name WILL be decided.
guy who draws every single day voice: i miss drawing
Manipulating my friend into talking to me by saying hello to them 😈😈😈😈😈
So uh
They found a whole lot of the rest of Spicomellus, aka one of the oldest ankylosaurians
Turns out it's also the spikiest
And apparently sacral shields and tail weapons go all the way back too
(Image from Maidment et al., 2025).
whoa WHAT
this is the guy who was previously known from literally just This:
and was thought to be some kind of weird ankylosaur but WOW this is not how anybody expected it to look, that is WILD
The world’s most unusual dinosaur is even stranger than first realised.
New!!! Favorite!!! Guy!!!
Let me once again highlight the fact that this guy has bony spike on its ribs.
to quote the NHM article linked above:
“This is completely unlike any animal living or dead, and raises real questions about how this animal moved,” Susannah explains. “Normally, bones like the ribs are used for muscle attachment, but because of the spikes it’s hard to tell where the muscles could have gone.” “Frankly, we have very little idea about how this dinosaur would have moved at all.”
Like, the extreme spikes on the neck and above hips are one thing, and they hypothesize on their evolutionary origin and relation with other ankylosaurs, but wtf was it doing with a spiky ribs.
my most toxic trait is that whenever i hold something you're meant to hit things with, i start feeling very different. Very powerful
My white ass would be corrupted by the demon blade so fast. Like you could not put me and the demon blade in the same room before i would be taking bodies and drinking the blood of former confidants
