this post spread way further than anticipated so let me clarify the reasoning behind the snark

-herpetology and hobbyist communities are rife with people absolutely frothing at the mouth to “well actually” their way to the top of the pecking order

-newbies will get torn to pieces and mercilessly criticized for using the word ‘poisonous’ to describe a venomous animal even when their contextual meaning was perfectly clear

-the distinctions between the two words genuinely aren’t that important

other languages don’t have separate words for animal toxins

saying an animal had a toxic bite/sting/skin/flesh is actually clearer and more practical than anything else you can say about it

the actual chemical substances in a toxin may be basically or literally the same, ex. tetrodotoxin used as a venom and as a poison (and which is usually-to-always produced by bacteria), and snakes that produce venom as well as storing and excreting toad poison

“venom can’t affect you if you drink it unless you have internal abrasions” is just not the foolproof blanket statement people treat it as… yes, it seems many venoms get destroyed by the digestive process and can’t enter the bloodstream when consumed, but this definitely hasn’t been thoroughly tested for more than a handful of venoms

anyway the point is that the actual differences just aren’t important enough to justify the impassioned shittiness I see directed towards newbies and ESL speakers in herp and entomology groups
