Unmounted rider exercises to improve your seat: Strengthen & straighten your own core.
So whilst we’re looking a little at strengthening the horse’s core, and before we get onto ridden exercises, let’s do the same for the rider.
There’s growing research evidence that improving your seat off the horse is a great thing to do because a) it’s effective - who doesn’t want a better seat - and b) you can correct muscle patterns more easily when you and the horse aren’t encouraging each other’s asymmetries. Get your core stability correct, it’ll be easier to get your horse correct. You can spend hours fighting not to collapse at the hip, to sit straighter, deeper, drop your thighs down, toes in and get the horse engaged, to stay with him over jumps, but it’s never going to be as effective as just correcting your own muscle weakness before you start.
Also in exciting news I broke my ankle and so unmounted exercises are quickly becoming my thing. A broken ankle is pretty common in horse riders so this should also help my fellow sufferers whose days are currently filled with repeating “can I ride yet?” I can’t get you back on the horse yet, but at least we can make sure that when you do you haven’t lost all semblance of riding ability, and might even have improved a bit. Might come in handy if your horse has been laying off while you recuperate!
Step 1) Caring: I haven’t broken anything, why do I need to strengthen my own core?
The rider’s seat is an active process. “Sitting on a horse” sounds passive but an engaged seat requires a lot of muscle strength and coordination. Phrases like “go with the movement” are not that helpful as it makes you feel like you just have to find the right kind of wibbly wobby relaxation.
Find something now: a bouncy ball, a sweet wrapper, anything lying around that you can put in your hand and trust to stay completely relaxed. Now bounce your hand sharply up and down, and see how fast you can go whilst it stays in a deep contact by just going passively with the movement. How’s that working out for you?
Imagine an enthusiastic horse bouncing along in trot or canter. Gravity & relaxation are not enough to keep you in the seat when the moving horse bounces you upward. When the horse reaches the downward part of his bounce gravity will pull you back down too but only once you’ve completed your upward trajectory - shortly after the horse stops pushing you up. This means you’ll be catching up with the horse’s back, coming down onto the horse’s back as it starts to re-ascend, with a painful bump. Then he’ll tense up, you’ll tense up, we’ve all been there. Nasty. If you actually tried the bouncy hand exercise, you may have also discovered the urge to slow down to reduce bouncing. Or as we call it “lazy” or “behind the leg”.
We the ambitious riders who’d like to own happy horses, want even more than a deep seat that stays on the horse, we want to control our muscle use so that we can move with the horse, even shift our pressure and tension and use it as an aid. No other sport attempts to reach this level of fitness, strength and coordination by just doing the sport. We need to release muscles we’d naturally tighten and tighten muscles we’d not normally use. We need exercises.
Step 2) Addressing the muscles
Iliopsoas: Psoas & iliacus.
The iliopsoas group of muscles is the deepest & arguably the most important part of your core. It’s made up of the psoas major and iliacus. Most people can’t be bothered to say iliopsoas, so they say psoas (the ‘p’ is silent) and mean the whole group, leaving others to get confused and starting to wonder if iliopsoas is yet another muscle. Don’t let it bother you. Similarly some people get het up about psoas minor, but in bipeds (that’s you) it’s so small it’s often absent, so functionally it’s not the place to focus. We’ll worry about psoas minor when we talk about a [four-legged] quadruped.
Psoas (major) runs from the spine (lumbar vertebrae) to the inside of the femur (or thigh bone), so it flexes the hip and turns the leg out. Ditto iliacus, running from the pelvis to the same femoral attachment, having much the same effect. If you sit in a chair, car seat or anything that leaves you in that thighs up position for an hour or two, your iliopsoas shortens and contracts. So if you have or had a desk job rather than a sitting-on-horses job you’re likely to have issues here. You may even be sleeping for hours every night in a lovely cosy foetal position - or worse, with one leg bent. I’m pretty good at guessing someone’s sleeping position by looking at them on a horse.
If you contract your psoas sitting on a chair, you stay on the chair, albeit with back pain. If you contract your iliopsoas sitting on a horse, you end up with a forward-tilted pelvis, a hollow back (and a hollow horse), and a flexed and outward-turned hip. This means that you can’t get the thigh down or the knees to turn in, because your hip flexors and rotators are jammed on, and to avoid tipping forward you’ll try to sit up by hyperextending & bracing the back. You’re working very hard co-contracting muscles to fight yourself but all you can get is tense, stiff and nasty. Your horse is actually being asked to hollow and you look like a frog.
Even within the very elite, Carl Hester for example has noticeably tighter iliopsoas muscles than his pupil Charlotte Dujardin and so has to work harder to get the same results.
If you’re really unlucky you spend a lot of time sitting in a chair asymmetrically. If you pull more on just one psoas, just on one side, you bend the spine & hence trunk to that side, collapse that hip and are left wondering why you just can’t sit straight on a horse.
If you want to be able to move synchronously with the horse so for example in walk your pelvis rocks side to side as your horse does, allowing him to use his back then you need to use your iliopsoas correctly, from a relaxed state.
The iliopsoas group are your most powerful hip flexors. If you’ve ever done knee ups or sit ups thinking you were strengthening your abdominals, chances are these are the muscles you were working. Good news is once you’ve released your iliopsoas muscles your abdominals and inner thigh will naturally strengthen as they’ll actually have to do some of the day-to-day work themselves.
ironically most people’s iliopsoas are both both tight and weak, because they’re not using the full range of movement. There are lots of exercises online for strengthening the iliopsoas/psoas. Don’t do them. First we want to lengthen and release. There are a lot of yoga videos online on “psoas” release and most of these are very useful.
As the iliopsoas is so close to the diaphragm just breathing can help, and that’s one of the reasons that breathing correctly has such an effect on your horse. Similarly if you tilt your pelvis posteriorly, as if you were trying to tuck your bottom under you and round your lower back, your psoas will already start to stretch and you may feel any lower back pain ease.
It’s very hard to stretch a muscle before it’s warmed up or contracted (despite older advice telling you to stretch before you start exercise) so the best way to start with your iliopsoas is to lie on your back, bring one bent knee up to your chest so that the hip flexors are really short and active. In that position hollow and round your lower back so that you can really target the muscles. Then slowly lengthen your leg out from there until it is flat on the floor and you’ve stretched as tall/long as you can be. Hold for a few seconds. Repeat this a few times on both sides, seeing if you can feel a longer stretch each time.
The second exercise to try is half kneeling and is a little similar to a lunge. Kneel on one knee with the other foot on the floor in front of you, as if you’re going to propose. Then keeping your body upright try to push forward slightly onto your front leg opening your trailing hip to leave the bent leg behind you. This is close to the crescent lunge in yoga, and stretches the iliopsoas of the trailing leg.
With both exercises repeat 2-4 times both sides, 3 or 4 times a week or as needed.
There are plenty of variations of these and other exercises. It’s ideal to just to think about where the muscle is, and just move in a way that stretches it within your own current ability.
Abdominals
The abdominal muscles get a lot of attention: they’re right on the surface, make your clothes look good and more importantly for us they’re certainly a big factor in making a rider effective. The effortless riders that seem to be doing nothing are using a lot of abdominal muscle strength. Going scroll back up to have another look at Charlotte, relaxed but certainly not passive, using a massive amount of abdominal tone to keep Valegro off his forehand and her own body in an effective position. This, along with the pelvic floor, is what is helping pull her down into the saddle even though her horse has pushed her up, and keeps her still so her aids are clear and hands independent.
The tricky part in trying to strengthen your abdominals is that many traditional exercises make it easy to cheat and just use your iliopsoas muscles, leaving you with even more back ache. We’re already great at shortening the iliopsoas, and it’s making us sucky riders. So instead of sit ups and crunches let’s engage core stability and make the abs work in a targeted, lengthened position. If you don’t have a broken ankle you can start the infamous plank - on your hands and knees or hands and feet, as straight as you can as if you’d just completed a push up, but just hold it. Start with ten seconds or two minutes, whatever feels right. Tomorrow you can go ten seconds longer. It’s important to stay within what feels comfortable as if you try to hold it for too long you’re likely to lose the straight back, neutral spine position, and won’t be targeting the muscles as well as you could.
The second exercise to try is similarly starting on your hands and knees, straight back, knees directly below hips. Then lift one hand and one leg straight out and hold it. As with the horse’s exercise the abdominals are working dynamically to keep you stable and balanced, making this a very effective exercise. Similarly if you lift one leg from the plank pose you’ll add a lot of extra challenge to the exercise. In both cases don’t forget to switch and work both sides!
Good news
The great thing about core muscles is that they are unusually quick to train, and not too hard to maintain. The hard part is just the getting started, and you should see results as quickly as the second week.
There is a little more to say about core strength and stability but as ever I’ve already gone on long enough and both family life & paid writing are calling, so I’ll return to this topic in a Part 2. Worth mentioning though, that whilst I’ve used dressage pictures, the core is particularly relevant to the showjumper as it is what keeps you in balance over a jump in a fold. If you struggle with getting ahead or behind your horse, over a jump or in any discipline, or getting him to engage or respond to your aids, a lack of core stability is usually to blame. Ditto ending up exhausted and out of breath when you ride. Often people are just tired because they’ve mostly been fighting themselves. But now we’re going to fix that. Yey us.

Hokay so I am actually pretty proud of my seat so I will start off by saying thank you and thank you to the other bajillion people who complimented me on it tonight. You guys rock :]
I credit my seat to having started off riding bareback. It really helped develop that instinctual feeling of the horse. I literally took lessons on a lunge line bareback on trail ponies when I was itty bitty and it was the best (and only good thing) that my first instructor ever did for me. Tips though!
1. Ride bareback/without stirrups as much as you can. This applies double if you are having a crap ride. I cannot tell you the number of times I have been on and having a frustrating time and have dropped my stirrups. It focuses you in on yourself, your seat, and how you are influencing the horse. If you can’t do more than walk/trot at first do NOT be discouraged. Do what you feel comfortable with and work up from there. You will be amazed at how when your focus turns inward and you become aware of your own faults and strive to fix them how quickly the horse responds positively because you are actually riding better! I think 99% of the time we are caught up in our own bad habits (which in turn create a negative outcome seen in the horses way of going) simply because we are unaware of them or that it is ‘easier’ to ride like that. Riding without stirrups is not easy. I am not here to tell you that. What I will say is that you will reap the benefits ten fold if you can isolate and correct your own riding flaws, and the rewards will show in the way your horse goes.
2. Ride whatever you can sit on! The more horses you can sit on, the better. Every horse has something to teach you.
3. That being said find a horse you feel comfortable enough to be able to work on you on. Even if you are only presented with the opportunity to ride a difficult horse that is no excuse for you to not work on yourself. I really believe in being the kind of rider who strives to bring my 100% to the table so I can fairly ask for 100% out of my partner. This goes back to not letting yourself develop bad riding habits even if they ‘Get the job done’ or ‘Are good enough to fudge the work on this particular horse’. Always strive for 100% correct. And like in number one, work on yourself in a pace/gait/movement/exercise that allows you to be aware OF yourself - don’t overface yourself.
Generally speaking while riding:
- Positive tension: This is one of those things I don’t think is talked about enough. You hear about positive tension in the horse doing upperlevel work but to a degree the rider has to have that same positive tension in their body. If you are completely swinging and loose you will sit like a sack of potatoes and flop all over the horse disturbing the rhythm and potentially ruining the gaits completely. Keep positive tension through your core specifically. From there I believe in positive tension through the legs so that, yes, they breathe around the horse, but you are pushing into the foot/heel and that they stay consistently away (but close) to the horses side until you are ready to give an aid. My school of thought is you do not ride with constant pressure on the horses sides. You ask, release, evaluate response, and ask again if needed. Val especially would become SUPER dull if I constantly rode with my legs snug around him. The leg has to breathe around the horse.
- Ride with short enough stirrups: This sounds bizarre from a dressage rider since we are known for loving long stirrups. You cannot learn to be effective if you are constantly reaching for your stirrups and worried about your balance. Start short and allow your leg muscles time to become strong in a longer length. Just like a horse, you don’t start in an FEI frame. You must muscle and think of yourself like an athlete in the same way. Be able to actually push down on the ball of your foot to anchor yourself. You need this ability sometimes giving a particularly good half-halt.
- Practice rolling your thighs into the saddle: Even at the halt you will see Grand Prix riders do this. They will literally lift out from their hip flexor, pull their leg off the horse, roll the whole leg inwards, and put their leg back on. Practice this. And ride like this in all the gaits. It will dramatically improve how close your leg is to the saddle and how secure you are. This is how you get your toe to turn in. And before you go and do it know that it isn’t easy to get your leg to stay like this (positive tension) and it will be something you have to constantly re-do and re-check. My old trainer would stand out in the middle of the arena and at the halt pull my leg off the horse, twist it around, and put it back on in the correct painful position and demand I keep it there. It sucks. But it will make you a beautiful rider.
- Push down in your knees: This is the BIGGEST piece of advice I can probably give to anyone learning to sit better (including and especially related to sitting trot). Push your knees down. I hear trainers all the time telling their students to lengthen their leg and push down in their stirrups, but that only creates a locked ankle and a leg that is *most of the time* turned out. Let your weight push your knees DOWN, not in or gripping, on the tack. Think about this instead of “heels down”.
For the canter specifically always imagine that the canter is a medicine ball underneath your saddle (or that the ball is the butt/hind end) and every stride you are bouncing the ball forward. Be sure to open your chest and diaphragm by looking up. To not fall forward in the canter transition literally put your eyes to the sky above you and try asking. If you are balanced it will work every time. Also make sure for that transition you are letting your inside hip come more forward and that you are presenting the canter like you are stepping forward with that inside hip. You have to be saying, look horse - this is the lead. It can be compared to when a male lead in ballroom takes the first step forwards to ‘lead’ the female. You have to be sure, and your weight has to follow through the hip.
Ride like you are in front of your idol or a panel of 5* judges and you are trying to impress. Put that pressure on yourself every day to be that good (note: on yourself - not the horse).
And although I haven’t really had a ‘seat lesson’ since I was a bareback little tot don’t rule them out if you have a correct horse and someone who can help you. Most of the time I find that I am not in the situation where this is applicable though so this is why it is included as an afterthought.

Vandal’s Guide to Good Pastern Conformation, Part I of III: Anatomy, Angle, and Length
So a while back I recieved the following ask:

Which I’m just getting around to replying to, because I am a human disaster and it takes me forever to reply to some of my asks there are so many things that can go wrong with pasterns, because:
"The combination of high-impact loading during sport performance and the distal location of these joints puts them at higher risk for fractures and breakdown." (Bertone 2013, 275).
This three part series will hopefully address all those concerns; good pastern conformation is important for every horse, however with show-jumpers and gallopers, pastern conformation is even more important, as their activities put maximum force on their pasterns, so conformation faults potentially come with more serious consequences.
Anatomy These examples will discuss front pasterns (including the fetlock joint), as they are more likely to fail because they bear more significantly more weight than the hind pasterns. The usual figure given is that 60% of weight is borne on the front pasterns, but that figure is subject to great variation,with a more extreme weight born on the fore pasterns depending on other conformational factors (which will be discussed in Part II).
This information is also specific to physically mature horses, and for comparison all pastern diagrams are of horses standing square; as uneven stance will cause variations in pastern angle.
The pastern is comprised of two primary bones the short pastern and long pasterns, and three pivot points. Pasterns effectively function as shock absorbers, equitably distributing the force of a horse’s footfalls amongst the ligaments (connective tissue), tendons, and bones, so that no one part is overloaded. Poorly conformedpasterns therefore have a greater risk of resulting in arthritis (short upright pasterns) ortendon damage (long laid back pasterns).
Angle and Length There’s a clear relationship between angle and length in most cases (I have seen some exceptions due to improper hoof care), however the subject of the healthy range of variance and ideal length and angle is contentious.
“Manyauthorities say that the normal angle of the front foot should be between 45–50°. Where did this number come from? White (1802) is the first to state that the angle of the hoof should be a specific number of degrees. His book shows a hoof super- imposed on a protractor scale, with the hoof angle at exactly 45 degrees. Many competent observers have questioned this over the last 200 years. Horace Hayes (1898) said that after careful study, the angle of the front feet should be from 47–57°. Gene Ovnicek’s measurements of wild horses in Montana and Wyoming found hoof angles of 50 to 65°, with most between 54 to 58°. Dr. Hilary Clayton found, ‘In the front limbs the average slope (of the hoof-pastern axis) was 54 degrees.’” (Marks 2000, 39)
Different angles cause different wear on the tendon, bones, and hoof:
"It is frequently stated that long sloping pasterns in the front leg predispose to suspensory and superficial flexor tendon strain. While there is an intuitive appeal to this, it is the author’s experience that the opposite is more likely. Dr. Joe Cannon has pointed out that long upright pasterns in racehorses lead to a high incidence of suspensory apparatus injuries. Dr. Ron Genovese agrees and observes that upright pasterns are also more frequent in horses that bow. Horace Hayes says: “Long sloping pasterns are easier on suspensories and necessary on hard ground.” The author has observed that long sloping pasterns in race horses (which are more common in stayers) are likely to run down, but otherwise are not a problem.
Upright and especially short, upright pasterns, predispose to proximal interphalangeal joint disease. While not a common racehorse ailment, it is significant in jumpers and other performance horses. Top dressage horses must have some length and slope to their pasterns otherwise the suspension and cadence they require in their gait is not possible.” (Marks 2000, 41)
So to summarise: it’s necessary to have a certain amount of length for best shock absorption in basically every discipline, and while horses with more extreme pastern conformation will fare more poorly in some disciplines, there is no clear consensus on ideal pastern angle in general, let alone what angle may be perfect for each discipline (though between 47 and 57 degrees seems to be the most commonly agreed upon healthy range of variation).
Under maximum load (such as when landing from a jump or galloping), the fetlock joint even of a well angled pastern may collide with the ground, as seen in this image:

"The fetlock joint is a rotary joint that can exhibit the greatest range of motion of any equine joint, ranging from 120° of extension to 120° of flexion, particularly during athletic events such as racing or jumping… This high degree of activity makes this joint particularly susceptible to exercise-induced wear and indeed, the fetlocks are commonly associated with injury and signs of degenerative joint disease." (Bertone 2013, 275).
Impacts such as this are why it’s said that horses have a finite number of jumps in them; repetitive trauma such as the fetlock being grounded will eventually cause a horse to be too unsound to keep jumping. Horses with longer than ideal pastern lengths (with lower pastern angles) are likely to have their fetlocks impact with the ground more often, under less pressure, and that makse such horses even less suited to jumping and galloping than the average horse.
Veterinarian Christian Schacht suggests that a guide for determining if the pastern is an appropriate length is that a plumb line between the heel buttress and the front of the fetlock will be in alignment (Schacht 2012, 89), though the origins of this rule are unclear, and it is unclear if this rule has ever been tested through research. In the above diagrams I’ve indicated the line from the heel buttress, and as you can see it’s reasonably well aligned on moderate angles, but as angles become more extremely upright, or laid back, these points shift out of alignment; so it may have some merit as a rule of thumb.
Though this is a three part series, I’m just going to give you the TL;DR spoilers now: If anyone is overwhelmed by the mass confusion about pastern conformation; get a feral horse, they have great pasterns because long term soundness is more of a selection pressure for them than domestically reared horses. As Dr. Deb Bennett pointed out:
"Through the 5,000 year history of equine domestication, the horse’s torso ─ especially the beck, withers and loin coupling ─ have been improved, but the legs have lost 50 percent of their original structural sturdiness…
While ‘soundness’ in horses depends on many internal and external factors… the amount of ‘bone’ itself is a significant determinant of soundness. This is because structural stability and stress reduction in the support developments of a horse obey the same physical law as as the support elements of a skyscraper. The ability of a support pylon to bear weight is a function of its circumference but not of its density. A very dense bone can be a brittle bone. Arabian horses tend to be sound legged horses not because they have ‘dense bone’ but because they rarely exceed Nature’s limits ─ 15 hands, 1,000 pounds [454 kilos]… If you want a sound horse, you’ll be very wise to purchase one shorter than 16 hands, 2 inches, and weighing less than 1,350 pounds [612 kilos]. Don’t expect a draft horse (or any horse weighing more than 1,350 pounds) to stay sound in a career involved in jumping or repetitive activities such as dressage. For the same reason, very large horses are also unsuitable for cross-country or endurance riding.” (Bennett 2012, 78-79).
