Doctor Who is a great fandom to be in on tumblr because you'll see spoilers everywhere but not a single one of them is coherent unless you've seen the episode anyway. like oh the glorbon is secretly trying to ensnare humanity in a giant crab trap? the new companion Jiminy Pubble turned out to be the latest regeneration of the Doctor's old enemy The Fuckwizard? thanks I know less than I did before
"Can I ask you a personal question?"
Sci-fi short stories are so efficient; they take 15 minutes to read and then you think about them for the next 5 years
Hey guys, what if *puts the most horrifying mindblowing concept into your head with about 15 pages*
hey… hey y’all? there is so much Doctor Who
like whatever number you have in your head right now, however vast, however “surely that’s all of it,” I need you to understand that number is wrong, there is more, there is always more
you think you’ve got a handle on it and then someone gently taps you on the shoulder and goes “have you listened to the audios” and suddenly a trapdoor opens beneath you and it’s just an endless staircase of box sets and spin offs and side stories that branch off into other side stories like a narrative hydra
you climb out of that and go okay, okay, I see the shape of it now, and then someone else appears from the mist like a cryptid and goes “what about the novels” and now you’re staring at shelves upon shelves of alternate timelines
and just when you think you’ve reached the edge, that you’ve found the boundary of the thing, you realize the boundary is fake, it’s been fake the whole time, it just keeps going, comics, lost episodes, animations, random BBC web content from 2009 that someone swears is essential lore
there is always more
there will always be more
you cannot win this game, you can only choose how deep you’re willing to fall
It's very clear that Andrew Tate and other "redpill" influencers of his ilk didn't understand The Matrix (or maybe didn't even watch it) it they think that escaping the Matrix means living a life of luxury and fame. They got it exactly backwards.
Escaping the Matrix in the movie means living a life of hardship and discomfort. But it's a life that is full of genuine experiences and connections that aren't designed to exploit you.
To hammer the point even more, the motivation of the traitor character is to live a life of luxury and fame inside the Matrix, not caring that it's fake.
I think a lot of those people see escaping the Matrix as "you get to warp reality as you see fit and have superpowers." They see privilege as the reward for their efforts of understanding the systems in control of our world.
They forget that it means knowing your body is still in the real world, fighting against the cold and metal that want you dead for as long as you live outside of their jurisdiction.
They don't want to escape the Matrix. They just want to rule the Matrix. They want to be Agent Smith and think they're Neo.
remember to bury the dead with a phone, everyone. these days the ferry terminal at the river styx wants you to download a fucking app
THE WIZARD OF OZ 1939 | dir. Victor Fleming
sometimes when I get mad online I have remind myself that the coolest and most reasonable friend I have doesn’t know who dril is and asked me to explain what the acronym “MCU” stands for, because she spends most of her free time watching documentaries about industrial disasters with her girlfriend and going to quarries to collect rocks together. a better world is possible and it’s out there right now
Watching 'DOCTOR WHO' in Australia in 2023...
I am so excited for the upcoming era of Doctor Who. The legendary Russell T Davies returns to lead the show, and we have an exciting new Doctor.
The Disney Plus acquisition of distribution rights outside of the UK and Ireland might be fantastic news for some, particularly many American fans who previously had to endure what I hear is a hellish viewing experience on BBC America.
But as an Australian Whovian, this news breaks my heart(s).
New episodes of Doctor Who have been available to all Australians for free on ABC TV– without advertising– since 1965, and Australians enjoy free access to the ABC's ad-free iview streaming service. You simply had a right to Doctor Who as a member of the Australian public.
The newly announced BBC-Disney deal brings an abrupt and unceremonious end to a 57-year legacy of free public access.
After seeing the Disney Plus announcement on Twitter, I held out hope that even if Doctor Who was no longer free on iview, the ABC would at least still retain licence to broadcast it on traditional TV.
However, the ABC recently confirmed that they will be losing Doctor Who entirely beginning in 2023 as a result of the BBC-Disney deal.
This is the end of an era for Aussies.
All other Australian fans I have spoken to about this are some variation of disgusted, shocked, and even somewhat offended by this news, even those who already have Disney Plus and so won't technically lose access to anything.
It feels violating, unprecedented, even blasphemous... not to sound too dramatic about it. Even the new promotional image with Disney's logo front and centre next to Doctor Who's feels oddly disconcerting...
I can only hope that Disney Plus will at least treat the show right and maybe help to bring it to people who couldn't otherwise access it elsewhere in the world...
RIP to Doctor Who on the ABC.
You will be missed.
💔💔
Since the announcement that the Disney-Doctor Who deal is over, I’ve never felt more vindicated!
This rant-post is from a few years ago, and not only was this Disney deal half-baked, but it has inadvertently resulted in the show being as inaccessible as it has ever been in Australia.
Disney has also apparently decided to just not release “The War Between the Land and the Sea”.
Could not be more pleased this dark era is over!
there's this sort of default assumption online that you're meant to have watched the latest defunctland, hbomberguy or dan olson video in a manner i'd compare to "catch the game last night?"
