For my book series, I did anything but put on a series name + number. Really.
-Time, like the moon rising/trees dying
-Graphical elements, 1 healthy tree, 2 decaying trees, 3 stumps
-Tiles...ONE Aon Fatality. DUALITY (two) of Forces. THREE Wasted Chances.
-Blurb actually says "Book one of Blah Trilogy."
I avoid numbers like Americans avoid metric. A mile is 1320 capybaras long.
What stupid chapters/scenes/ideas did you strip from your books?
I assume most people have a bunch of chapters, scenes, paragraphs, and ideas that ended up on the cutting room floor. This could be because they dragged the pacing, didn't enhance the story, the narrative had changed, etc.
A few of mine:
-The femme fatale went to the gym. (This added nothing other than establish that she was pretty and people assumed she exercised out of vanity when it was a function of her job.)
-MC's parents comically trying/failing to admit their very alien-looking daughter to a public hospital. (Because this was outside of the MC's perspective, it got cut to reduce the amount of POVs in the book. Also, it was just utterly ridiculous and the three lines I needed from it could be added in other chapters.)
-Smexy scenes with character and MC. (Didn't like the power-dynamic problems nor the age difference though they were both adults. Implied some feelings but left it vague since otherwise it went from "maybe" to "ick.")
-Lots of fight scenes with different moves and power scaling. (Axed whole combat sections because they added nothing and slogged the book.)
It has been 1012 days since I've become an author, and I am neither famous nor rich because of it.

When people call me boring, clearly it is a sign I am not a narcissist who talks about herself a lot.
It's also the same reason I don't talk about my incredibly interesting and unique books in-depth a lot.
Sigh... I hate phone calls with my parents.
"We came back from our trip."
Then they start arguing with each other and I'm now referee...
"Oh, and we have more things planned. Did you do anything?"
Doesn't let me get in an answer.
"Blah blah blah... Bye!"
I spoke 5 words.
"Like, hi. I should warn you (Dad), I just got you a nice gift. It's in the mail. I got plans for my 40th birthday, including something insane. My giant art piece is coming in. Audiobooks. I bought an apartment. Wanna see my gravesite?"
They call me boring. They never ask.
Update regarding my nearly 9' tall statue of my Fakemon Pokemon character... (Yes, really.)
She's finished, waiting to be crated.

Writer on r/SelfPublish was whining that their "controversial" had a low 4.6 star rating.
Uh. What? MY controversial book, THIN, is sitting on a 3.6 on Goodreads since it's a Black Mirror episode about fat positivity in a world where thin is shamed. I earned those 3 stars because my book is actually uncomfortable.
Apparently all I had to say was sci-fi LGBT to convince someone to try my books…

Draft2Digital has gone about AI books wrong
Dear, Draft2Digital
Regarding your new TOS policy to charge creators earning less than $100 USD $12 USD for "maintenance" and "upkeep".
It is absurd that you do not implement fair policy by charging other creators with higher earnings at least the minimum fee. A policy implemented should be implemented fairly, and this comes across as a lazy and ineffective method for weeding AI; especially given that a AI author that fails to meet the $100 will likely remove their payment info prior so the cost cannot be recouped, and/or, remove their account prior to their dues. Thus, this policy is poorly implemented, short-sighted, unfair, and doesn't alleviate the AI problem since that user base is tech savvy.
Suggestions for weeding AI users requires more hiring with a more fair royalty policy that benefits both the authors and Draft2Digital: like 20% royalty divisions (which is still more attractive than Amazon's 30% for exclusivity), or equal-use payment fees, or small rate per upload of book (say $5 per upload). When weeding out bad players and AI, things like generic email use, location data, tax form origins (W-2), IDs, upload rate, genre type, etc can reduce AI submissions and their "authors." Paying out to a bank vs Paypal is another way to discourage malicious players.
This policy also discourages authors from using Smashwords Sales to generate interest as they are now being penalized for offering their work for free and drive interest to not only Smashwords but the Draft2Digital platform.
Draft2Digital is now charging a $12 maintenance fee for authors earning less than $100 a year
They announced this on their blog.
"Annual Maintenance Fee: An annual maintenance fee of $12 will apply to accounts whose earnings from book sales, meaning your net proceeds after D2D’s commission, total less than $100 over the preceding 12-month period. If you earn $100 or more from your book sales over 12 months, you will not be charged this fee."
One reason why I ended up recording my own audio books is the many people who told me, "I don't read. I only like to listen to audio books."
These are the same people now telling me, "I only listen to audio books done by actors."
Please tell me being an indie author gets better.
Currently slugging through doing the sound engineering/editing for my audio book series, and dang, do I ever need validation that this is worth it. Was supposed to be done in March, now looking more like May.
