"For 49,800 of those years [the Aboriginals] had the continent to themselves. … Then on April 29, 1770, British explorer James Cook landed his ship, the Endeavour, on the southeastern shore. The next two centuries were a horror show of cultural obliteration—massacres, disease, alcoholism, forced integration, surrender. ~ National Geographic“ The Aboriginals, though indigenous to Australia, have largely been an ignored population on the continent after their land was stolen from them centuries ago. But in the pageant world, that has hopefully ceased. Just days ago, Maminydjama Maymuru became the first Aboriginal in history to move forward as the North Territory representative for Miss World Australia. Should she win the next round of competitions, she will also become the first Aboriginal to be crowned Miss World Australia. Maymuru would then compete in the international Miss World event this September. In addition to the pageant, the 19-year-old, 5′ 10″ beauty is trying out a modeling career after being scouted in the 12th grade. The main reason why I agreed to do [modeling] is that I don’t want to do it just for myself, I want to do it for young people all over Australia. That means black or white. I grew up both ways, the Yolngu way, and the balanda way, which is the white man’s way, the western way. #ManinydjamaMaymuru #missworldpageant
This is what it's all about. All the hard work, late nights, blood, sweat, tears, fussing, encouraging, wishing and praying leads to this! Congratulations to the Hattiesburg High Class of 2016 and to all the graduates. #HHS #HattiesburgHigh #Tigers #graduation
Ended my school year by doing something I have not been able to do on a weekday since August of last year - having lunch by myself. No mindless chatter. No kids asking me why I have strawberries in my salad. No one asking me if they can taste it or talking about how nasty the school food is whilst bragging that they had rotel for dinner. No need for me to explain to them that rotel is a dip not dinner and that the correct name is queso. I was able to have more than 20 minutes to eat and managed to have some complete thoughts. I could even post about it without some child asking me what my IG or Facebook name is and asking if I would friend them (silly rabbits). I sat and read my updates, listened to the music in the background and had a good time with me, myself and I. I Still have to go to graduation tonight and go to work for two days next (I don't know why either), but as far as I am concerned this year is finished and it's done. To my fellow teachers who still have a few more weeks... Hang in there. You haven't flipped the desk and chunked up the deuces all year, you can make it this little bit of time. To my teachers who are out like me, "PARTTTYYYY" Hit it Destiny's Child "I'm a survivor..." You made it!!! Hopefully with your sanity and most of your hair and if you got a contract for next year, you apparently didn't snatch anyone's child out the frame like you thought about doing. If you didn't get a contract for next year I hope it's because you are retiring or just moving on. If it were for other reasons, I pray that all things work out for you. Now back to this margarita and fish tacos. I need to go find something to wear to this graduation. #happysummer #teachingistoughbuttheofftimeisworthit #teacherissues
I feel the need to repost this from time to time. And this isn't to anyone but if it hits, you say "amen" or say "ouch". Sometimes a post is just a post. Sometimes it's a reflection of things I'm thinking about or have had a discussion about. But trust me, I know that this is social media, not a diary. So if there is seriously something going on in my real life, there will not be a play by play. Although, I can't say that there won't be a seemingly "shady" post or two that puts into words what I'm feeling at the moment - hey, I'm human. But I don't send out messages to anyone and definitely don't argue on here. I will debate politics and issues on an academic or intellectual level, but it's never personal. However, if you see something on my page that makes you say, "hey she's talking about me" well, if the shoe fits.... You know what I'm saying? If you have an issue with anything I post or feel that it's personal, call me and let's talk about it. But if you don't have my number, you don't know me well enough to take anything I post personal. Again, this is a media outlet and a place where people express their opinions on various issues. Last time I checked, there isn't an agree or disagree button and you aren't required to comment on everything. If you don't like something, keep clicking til you find something you do like. But if you find yourself caught up in arguments or commenting on everything you disagree with or taking every post as a personal affront or attack on you, then you might be too sensitive or immature to participate with the rest of the adults. IJS... Perhaps instead of Instagram you need to stick to one of those Fisher Price Toy View-Master Cameras; instead of Facebook, maybe you should scrapbook; instead of snap chat stick with Polaroids. O_O what? IJS. This is the Internet, not your real life...I hope. This public service announcement has been brought to you by "I'm grown" and sponsored by "this is my page" with endorsements from "keep it moving", "seriously, get over yourself" and "get a life, please". #rant

I know Wednesday is #humpday but Coach just took it too far. I mean seriously? 10 sled pulls and 8 sled pushes with 190lbs, 3 rounds of squats and side step squats, 3 rounds of swinging jump squats, 3 rounds of one foot elevated swinging jump squats all with two 20lb weights. The man is insane. Or maybe we're insane for doing it? I don't know but I do know you'd be insane to sit there and think anything will change if you don't #getup #getmoving #gethealthy #getfit. He even has a special deal for teachers, if you're interested and no you don't have to come at 5am. That's for the crazy people like me. But hey, we all need to go a little crazy sometimes. So meet me @healthylivingfitness or get to a gym of your choice. But the crazy thing to do would be to do nothing. And surely you're not that crazy. #operationdimefine
After 16 long weeks, my training is complete. I am officially a certified community research fellow. What does this mean? Well, my cohorts and I learned about conducting community based health research, getting research studies approve, community health disparities and varies other things which will lead to the development of programs designed to improve the health and welfare of our communities based on the specific needs found through our research. This program will enable me as a future cultural and community center director (speaking it into existence) to offer programs specifically tailored to the needs of my community. This has been an awesome experience and a great opportunity to network with the other 24 Fellows. I am grateful to have an awesome support team that allows me to pursue these various opportunities and interests. Hopefully, it will one day lead to great things for our community. #CRFTFellowship #research #communitybasedresearcher
