Princesses aren’t allowed to have fun
end s1. natla continues to be middling to good with strong kids program cheese (of course) and original moments i actually really like.
scattered bits and pieces:
most long-term characterization changes i'll hold off on fully judging because... i just don't care that much? like the animated show will always be there, was never perfect, and never needed to anchor itself on young untested talent in this way.
the katara teaches herself (with aang as a bending mentor) arc was such a smart change and i LOVE how centrally it places southern style waterbending pre-hama. who btw i imagine they will do some really interesting stuff with, likely tying her in with the southern raiders and/or the boiling rock plots?
even though katara and sokka were very different characters here i loved their relationship and the folding of aang into their little functional family unit. the group chemistry was so cutie.
i think the amount of azula this early kind of undercuts zuko pre-the storm/ursa revelations, as i said. HOWEVER, i am aware this is maybe the wrong framing to consider because everything about natla can better be understood as a call-and-response to the og and not wholly it's own thing anyway. and like, what Was azula doing during season 1?
also, this ozai characterization eats! daniel dae kim <3
i really really loved the war criminal iroh bits (and am excited for more!)
adding jet and the mechanist to omashu was another smart change! the katara and sokka twinning here was so so good with the dual deceits. and the moral weight of the war feels pretty well-realized even if it gets undercut by the show following omashu main plot too closely (bumi...) and thus some of the tension getting wasted.
i understood but didn't love the yue changes. the fox spirit thing was cute and making her a more rebellious, silly character to match sokka makes sense, i guess. i just am too emotionally attached to my self sacrificial ultimate martyr girl! which is also a sokka-ism! for some reason this is my line. it was a good choice making hahn a prototypical good guy and wartime tragedy though.
i know like nothing about the second season beyond it is (i think?) primarly in ba sing se? which again seems like a smart and economical choice. i'd love to pick these writers brains actually. oh that and the zutara fanfic lovers dream painted spirit plot. excited!!
okay LASTLY. we need to talk about the title cards. unforgivably ugly. literally what was the reason. just don't do them and there is a marked improvement. wtf.
I love Zukka content that's ACTUALLY about Zukka instead of Katara talking shit about Zuko 24/7
Trick or treat ? 🎃
uh... i really haven't planed anything for today but uh... here something small

Someone asked me this and it gives me the perfect opportunity to rant about something.
I never liked the Witch=bad/ Fairy=good thing in Winx Club, I know the reboot attempted to refute it, but it is still implicit. And the Fairy= trendy clothes and Witch= dark alt clothes is also boring.
I made completely different beings. Fairies are magical beings and witches are magic users, you are born as one and it’s not interchangeable. Like a regular person cannot transform into an elf or a unicorn, but if they have affinity to magic they can become a witch (or other types of magic user). And a fairy is magic, they have different power systems.
I also consider Magic a neutral energy, you determine how to use it, thou depending on how, it might have consequences.
So instead of evil forms I just thought of what they would do if they were magic users instead (this was just a quick doodle)
collection of ember island zutara doodles!!
All discourse about Steven refusing the kill the Diamonds (like the fact that he is 14 and also explicitly a pacifist whose powers center around PROTECTION) aside, I think a lot of SU discoursers and "critical" bloggers really missed the fact that no matter what, Steven and the Crystal Gems stood literally no chance against the Diamonds if they chose to fight.
When Blue and Yellow arrived on Earth, literally everyone was fighting them at full strength, with everything they had, and they didn't manage to do anything other than slightly inconvenience Blue BEFORE Yellow even joined the fray. Rose had a giant army and had to fake the shattering of a Diamond to make her revolution seem more legit and even with that army, all she could do was drive Blue off of Earth. And the retaliation was so horrific that out of her entire army, Rose was only able to save herself and four Gems (counting Ruby and Sapphire separately). White could literally crush Steven between her fingertips!
People keep comparing Steven and the Diamonds to Aang and Ozai as if the latter aren't just two regular ass humans with similar abilities and the former aren't one 14 year old versus giant ancient aliens with immeasurable strength who could literally kill Steven by stepping on him (which literally happens, Yellow steps on Steven and he is OUT). Just to remind people, this is how big White is:
If they had fought, they would've lost. Full stop. End of story.
Ben's progression through the series (probably)
I know what this is supposed to be implying, but those words paired with a picture of two people who look exactly alike is hilarious.
"The air nomads were accepting of differences. That's why they lived in gender segregated temples and were monks who shaved their heads and dressed alike and practiced asceticism."
Alternatively, they practiced situational homosexuality, which is often the case in gender segregated institutions. Which is not the same thing as being accepting.
