Playing a lot of Tetris Attack again got me thinking about how it’s the best puzzle game ever and stuff, and why exactly that is.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the general model of pieces filling in from the bottom and letting you manipulate them once they are on the screen is the optimal setup for puzzles games.

There was a time where I would destroy anyone at Pokémon Puzzle League. Good read, but I don't think entirely fair to Puzzle Fighter. It has the same kind of hedge-your-bets/plan-for-big-scores as Tetris/Tetris Attack, but it feels more competitive than other puzzlers. That said, certain characters’ counters are very broken.
