If you listened to transphobes, you might assume that the whole concept of “separate toilets for women” was designed with women’s safety in mind - and it was, but not in the way you might think. 

Gender-segregated bathrooms emerged in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century (so around the time women were entering the workforce in greater numbers in the US and Europe). But the idea behind that wasn’t rooted in empowerment or feminism: 

Women were seen as fragile and weak. Public spaces (and especially higher education or the workforce) were considered unsuitable for women. So, it was believed women needed separate “restrooms”, assuming they might faint due to their naturally "delicate" health.

Separate bathrooms limited women’s access to education, work, and public life. This may seem counterintuitive at first glance, so let me explain: women’s restrooms were often located inconveniently… subtly discouraging women from staying in public spaces for extended periods. This was not about women’s safety, but about men wanting control over women. 

In Victorian ideals, women were supposed to be modest and “pure”, and this meant that they had to occupy distinctly different spaces than men . Separate bathrooms were a way of reinforcing their “proper” roles in society, emphasizing that their “real” place is in the home rather than in public or professional spaces.

The argument that we need “women only” bathrooms to protect women is not rooted in history or evidence. They were born out of sexism, not safety.

Like unironically we should be subsidising at least 50% of their educations. What do you mean we have a shortage of doctors we should have surplus. What do you mean they’re being overworked they should be treated like royalty, they can fix human bodies

Medical professionals of all stripes are providing key services for people. It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to get certified.

I can understand why a lot of programs take a long time .... there's a lot to learn, and you want your professionals to be qualified. But that doesn't mean that you need to be wealthy to become a doctor.

The doctor shortage is actually mostly because doctors lobby to keep the number of doctors low so they get paid more. Break that particular power of the AMA and watch healthcare get cheaper and better.

um actually. i would strongly discourage anyone from going after their doctors as the cause of healthcare prices being high.

physician compensation has actually not been keeping up with inflation. just like the rest of the working people. (doctors work for their living. they get paid a lot more than the average person but they also take on a lot more liability and prior schooling than the average person. other people have said this. you don't want your doctors getting paid less. however we DO want EVERYONE to be paid a living wage too)

anyone ever get an itemized bill from their hospital visit? I would highly encourage it. look at what's on there. it isn't just your physician. it's every single piece of marked-up equipment and prices over that of an upscale hotel for every minute that you're in a bed.

you know what you should be looking at? administrative overhead. hospital lobbies are hugely powerful and pay to keep compensation to their facilities high.

also while we're here, insurance coverage is passing on healthcare costs to consumers. that's how they get rich.

so essentially, I wouldn't, if I were you, blame doctors to the majority for rising healthcare costs. there's lots wrong with how doctors get trained or even chosen and lots wrong with the current doctor shortage. but that's a different bag of cats than saying your doctor's salary is the drive behind rising healthcare costs.

And what if I told you that if my pain and problems from my disabilities get so bad I might seek to end my life, it would be within my rights as a person, and that it would not be eugenics. It wouldn't be eugenics because that's not what eugenics is.

Sometimes disabilities are really awful to live with. It's okay to admit it. I don't have to justify my existence or put myself on a pedestal or insist that I can be like everyone else with a perky smile and inspirational music. I think the individual should be able to figure out what they want without influence and pressure from authorities and industries.

So! This is a perfect case study in situations where you should be wary of misinformation.

Take a moment and ask yourself, a project like this requires a lot of time, money and dedication of resources, why would scientists dedicate that time to something that could just be done by a tree?

The answer is they wouldn't. So that means this claim requires further investigation!

This project is called LIQUID 3, and it's not meant for cities with wide open spaces, it's meant for cities like Belgrade in Serbia. These cities are densely populated and heavily polluted, to the point where pollution actually chokes out current trees and makes creating green spaces difficult.

Liquid 3 was a PhD scientists answer to these problems. The microalgae tank is intended for spaces where you either:

Don't have enough space to plant full trees, or

Don't have enough time to plant trees and wait for them to grow up.

The tank is extremely efficient when you consider the amount of space needed compared to the amount of CO2 turned into oxygen. The tank can operate throughout the winter. And most importantly, it can be quickly set up in areas that desperately need relief from air pollution NOW not in 10 years when trees are done growing. Children currently suffocating on polluted air can't wait for trees to grow, they need to be taken care of now, and Liquid 3 is one of the ways to take care of them. Depending on the species of microalgea used, a number have shown a pretty amazing capacity to pull heavy metals out of the air which is something trees can get choked up by.

The tanks aren't just tanks either! Liquid 3 have solar panels placed on top, they have lighting and mobile phone charging, and they work as public benches. The designers of it want to encourage green spaces where there's room, but where there isn't room or time, Liquid 3 can step in. Realistically, this isn't a replacement for trees. It's replacing boring metal city benches with new, cooler benches that also clean the air (and have at least some heating during the winter).

Not only that, but the microalgea that grows is native to Serbia and all that microalgea has a ton of great uses! It makes for great fertilizer, compost, wastewater treatment, cleaner biofuels and even for helping create new tanks for further air purification. They only require a quick algae divide once a month, and the produced algae can be carted off to where ever it's needed. This makes them effective solutions for areas that can't sustain complex installations.

So yeah, there's actually quite a lot of places that would like these. Lots of people currently breathing in terrible quality air would much rather have their boring city benches replaced with really fucking cool algae tanks that clean the air and can be used to help create + sustain future green spaces in cities. I dunno about you, but I'd take that over a dumb metal bench any day. Put these at every bus stop and I'd be delighted.

They become experts at managing how the present themselves to others before they are even old enough to understand why.
