Whitman's.....More? Please!
I don't expect anyone to get the title reference. But if you do, my boss Ryan will buy you lunch. In Australia. IF you arrive safely, that is!
Okay so 20 days into burger month and I am getting a little loopy, I'll admit. And so is Whitmans in the Village (A mecca I tell you, a MECCA!)
Bare with me....
Right this way....
Check out the cow....
Introducing The Peanut Butter & Bacon Burger!
I couldn't resist. Ray just watched in, what I'll interpret as, bemused admiration. :)
My only complaint, it was gone much too quickly!

Mini Meat!
I have eaten A LOT of meat this month. Even with the occasional veggie burger, you have to understand that prior to this I was practically a vegetarian!
Now, I am also the daughter of a hunter. I was reared on meat from the Canadian wild. And I didn't really start eating Beef until I was an adult and moved out on my own to the big city.
And even then my parents would send me the occasional freezer-pack care package of Buffalo or Moose burger. That is until I moved to another country....
At any rate, its been a filling month for this gal and today seemed like a good a day as any for mini burgers from....
Mini Burger!
There's nothing like "adorable" to distract a carnivore-in-denial from her flesh eating habits :)
The service in quaint little shop in Burger Mecca (also known as the East Village) was also excellent.
I got a two pack. One Bison Burger. One Turkey Burger.
I recommend the Turkey Burger!

Happy Burger Month to Me!
Friday the 18th of Burger Month was my B-Day.
After singing, dancing my heart out and emptying out the ole tear ducts on stage...
(Cue Plug: Before God Was Invented come see! Running til April 3 Thurs-Sat 8pm & Sundays 3pm, Buy tickets at Theatre for the New City)....
I made my way to the aptly named Black Market to meet my roomie, bestie and distinguished actor Colin Cramer (you can now find his profile on Actors Access!) along with fellow distinguished actor-in-training Paul Weinberg.
As I mentioned Black Market or should I say BLK MKT is aptly named. The directions say its on Ave A & the corner of 7th, a street and corner I pass by daily, and I've never noticed this place. In fact, I walked by it 3X that night mistaking it for another place attached to its hip called "Niagra."
Its distinguishing mark isn't the sign itself for BLK MKT, which is barely visible but you can't miss sign in the window!
Now, once you have unwrapped the mystery of its location, BLK MKT is a classy joint, perfect not only to meet friends for Beer, Martinis, Oysters AND BURGERS but also, would make for a cozy, romantic first date.
It certainly seemed like some sparks were flying at the table next to us. When the guy left to use the gentleman's lavatory, the gal filled us in on the details, not only is he a dream boat, but apparently "Such a nice guy!"
Now. BLK MKT deserves a special mention. What a concept for a Veggie Burger!
Get This. A panko crusted Eggplant Fillet served with Tartar Sauce and french fries.....!!!!
Colin & Paul also seemed happy with their burger, which they shared over pints of beer. But folks, even if you're not a vegetarian, I would come here just to try the Vegetarian Burger.
Special mention to our server. She was excellent. The place was packed that night, but she was on top of things and then, due to an extended wait-time on drinks my Martini was on-the-house, making for an even better birthday!
Thanks to everyone for all their Birthday Wishes and Burger Month Support!
~ Love Ashley
And a Saint came marching in...
This is Kevin. The Hero of Our Story.
This is my burger. The Villain. (Its a bitter-sweet kind of romance).
This is my server. Let's call him.... the unsuspecting sidekick.
This is Mark's on Mark's. Home of Delicious-ness. Mini-style. And scene of the incident.
For security purposes I am unable to show you a picture of my credit card, not that it would do you much good because....
on this particular evening my card was Declined. Twice.
It was a warm, spring night in Manhattan on the 17th Day of Burger Month, also known as Saint Paddy's Day.
And also opening night of my show Before God Was Invented at Theatre for the New City.
I was out celebrating with my cast and on my way home when I realized - I hadn't had my burger for the day! Noooo!
But I was in luck, on my way home knew I would be passing an already much loved Joint Mark's on Mark's on Saint Mark's at 2nd Ave by my second favorite place in the world Yoga to the People.
(Side note: They grind they're own beef. Saint Mark's Burger, not Yoga to the People.)
I rushed my intoxicated, high-on-life celebrating opening night booty into Mark's where the Saint Paddy's day kids were going strong.
The service was excellent.
So were my mini burgers.
My credit card sucks.

Re-introducing our Hero!!
Kevin is not only a Knight in Shining Armour who saved this Damsel-in-Burger-Distress he also seems like an all-round good guy. And he's a DJ!
I was blubbering like an idiot to my server - who had already ran my card twice - desperately trying to figure what happened to all the money I was SURE had been in my bank account and HOW I was going to pay for this...
When like an angel out of no-where, Kevin spoke up, "Allow me." !
I protested! He insisted. I was going to insist a 3rd time, when I thought, you know what Ashley, this is a burger month miracle from...
Oh behalf of myself, burger month and all its followers, burger lovers and drunk, broke damsel-in-distress' everywhere I hereby name Kevin...
Saint Kevin of Saint Mark's Burger
Thanks for saving my burger-ass!

Mug N Bun and Bub's - Oh My!
Saturday is the day that everyone looks forward to. There are songs and movies about it and now I know why. Because that's when people come to play - myself included.
It started off when Indianapolis resident and comedian Courtney Kay Meyers offered to take me to the Mug N Bun (on the recommendation of Crackers MC John Pittman.)
I was super excited as soon as I saw their sweet-old sign! But, before we were able to pull up one of their charming picnic tables and get to the business at hand...
first Courtney had to dismantle part of her car in an effort to keep it from dying as we ate.
Being a comedian for the better part of 7 years, this was in no way surprising nor is it anything that I expect you to understand if you don't do this for a living.
And, after perusing their charming if antiquated menue board
we decided it was time to press our luck!
Granted the button Courtney's touching is the way to let the waitress know that you're ready to order, but we hit it enough to seriously press our luck with the lady that was nice enough to take our order.
We each got the Single with Cheese, some fries and their famous home made Rootbeer...
none of which disappointed!
If comedy has taught me anything, it's that you can never have enough bookings! So, it was time for Courtney to shuttle us over to my next lunch appointment - thats right I said next lunch - which her car was nice enough to do after a little tender encouragement.
On Thursday, I had also made plans to eat with another of Indianapolis' Funniest (and old radio employer) Eddie James The other thing that I've learned doing comedy is that you always honor all of your bookings!
Before Eddie got there, we had time to walk around Carmel, Indiana and check out some of their peculiar sculpture choices
and my favorite, this cop with his arms out, hands spread wide open
I honestly don't know what else this town could have even possibly imagined when it installed this statue. I know that the 3 other women who also struck the same pose in the time I waited for my table probably wondered the same thing.
Anyway, Courtney had to leave for a show before Eddie joined me, and frankly, I don't think that he took it very well.
Fortunately, Eddie's suggestion to eat at Bub's Burger and Ice Cream in the Arts & Design District was a really good one.
Granted, he struggled a little with the menu
trying to decided if he felt like talking the Big Ugly - which is one pound of beef AFTER cooking that will get your picture on the wall if you can get through it! I think the Man Vs Food guy was able to do it, but I couldn't even fathom that as my encore!
I went with the The “Settle for Less Ugly” which was a quarter pound of beef and other things that are in truth a blur at this point.
granted, it was a tasty blur and I highly recommend it, but it was a blur none-the-less!
Both places were great and it really was the kind of strong finish that this town is known for (since they snuck out of Baltimore and drafted someone who's ability to win seems to come from his passion for hawking about a half a dozen different products.)

A Burger Place By Any Other Name
Friday night brought me to another one of my favorite chains, Rally's!
Or Checkers if you live on the East Coast!
Or The Place With All The Drive Throughs That's Kinda Ghetto But Still Rules if you're being honest with yourself!
They have a lot of great stuff on the menu here. They are known for their Big Befuford, which has two patties of beef and cheese seared and seasoned and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, catsup and whatever else they can fit into this Jenga puzzle of food. They also have Baconzilla which is double the seasoned beef, tripple the cheese and quadruple the bacon. Honestly, they could save a lot of time and just sell beef nooses.
I ordered the American Double Melt which is two patties, grilled onioins and melty cheese (their words, not mine) on sourdough - to go.
I hate eating in the car because it always makes me feel like I'm on a stake-out, and this time of night and zipcode are not a good combination for a picnic, so I had to wait till I was back in the hotel room to actually enjoy it.
And enjoy it I did! I don't think anyone's had this much unhealthy fun in a hotel room since we all found out how amazing Charlie Sheen is!
One of the things that Im not sure if I love or hate about this establishment is that they have a tendency to rotate things in and out of their menu, so the thing you loved last time may not be the thing that you get to enjoy this time... unless you're looking for that bewitching combination of satisfaction and regret that only this kind of food can bring you - in which case, they will always have plenty available for you.

Happy Burger Month Enrique!!
Aside from the fact that our birthdays were two days apart Enrique and I are convinced that I am his long lost quadruplet sister half, the explanation for which is beyond the limits of this Burger Blog.
However, Wednesday the 16th of Burger Month was a day of celebration, of sorts, for the birthday of Enrique and myself, who don't see each other much since we both graduated from The Stella Adler Studio Conservatory.
Introducing DuMont Burger in Williamsburg. http://www.dumontrestaurant.com/
I've been hearing raves about this place from many sources and now I know why!
Marinated Red Onions. Boston Bibb Lettuce. Perfectly sliced Tomatoes. And the cutest little sweet pickles ever!
And GET THIS. Sweet pickles ON the burger. Big Dill Pickle on the SIDE. Ingenious!
I ordered an extra serving of both :)
This is Fine Dining Burger Style.
Now, Enrique and I tried out DuMont's orginal location on the North Side of Williamsburg on Union Ave by the Lorimer Stop.
However, they have a second location thats opened up in the heart of the 'Burg on Bedford, called DuMont Burger....
I'm thinking, completely different burger place with even more burger options like a Turker Burger and.... a Chickpea Burger?!?! So, technically, it would completely fit within the boundaries of burger month if I came again, but to the alternate location.
After all its 30+ burger JOINTS in 31 days and I would hate to leave any one out.
To be continued.....
~Ashley
Organique? Mais, Ouis.
So, I've heard nothing about this place, no reviews, word-of-mouth, just a menu that was stuck in the Stella Adler Studio Menu/Takeout Binder....
As per my last blog post regarding the "Ostrich Burger!" I was a little shaken. A little less sure of myself. The ground beneath my Burger Month foundation had moved, my taste buds tested, perhaps beyond their limit....?!
Like, I'm thinkin', I'm gonna declare the week following the "Ostrich Incident" Veggie Burger Week. I'm thinkin, forget ostrich, I dunno if I can even consume any sort of "ground animal"
So, I see a menu for a place called
I'm thinking - veggies! Bring on the lentil Burger!
Now, among many healthy menu choices, they have a huge selection of Burgers...
But for vegetarian options all I can see is something called a "Boca Burger made with soy".... hmmmm.....
Today, the 15th of Burger Month, is a landmark day, but for me I'm not so much about expanding my horizons. I've gotta try the beef burger for this place!
Mmph! I was not disappointed. Delicious, juicy beef with a big fat Organic onion, BBQ Sauce.
Momma is back! And she is happy.
So, merci beaucoup "Organique" for saving burger month! Veggie Week will have to wait....
~Ashley
