Try as he might to maintain his usual nonchalant composure, the perturbed look in his eyes alone betrayed him.
Never did he expect for things to go this way, not when he was dragged all the way to the other side of the globe to accompany his father on a ‘business trip’. As fate would have it, he came across her. There was talk about a certain organization dealing with illicit weaponry, enough to gain the Shimada clan’s attention and interest to trade.
Quite the breath of fresh air, she was. Certainly different from those tycoons they were to rub shoulders with, and even those he called friends back at home, whose presence honestly only gave him a strange sense of emptiness sometimes – that unreasonable apprehension leading him to believe that they only stuck around him for clout.
But Ashe… how could he explain it? Despite only having encountered briefly, she felt… real. He didn’t think he’d ever met someone quite like her. So when Genji proposed to handle the trade personally, Sojiro was left pleasantly surprised. Well, the man could think whatever he liked this time, as long as he could sate his own curiosity. Because who was he kidding? Deep down he was afraid he’d lose that spark of connection otherwise… that longing for meaning.
“‘Deadlock’, huh? I should hope your reputation precedes you.”
She was wearing full leathers today, spurs with snakes and skulls on them made of silver and sharpened. If she wanted to, probably could do some damage if she really applied herself. She would complain about how this outfit was a little too hot for the sun beatin’ down of the road to the base. Having Mister Shimada meet her a little ways away from it so they could walk the short distance back. And yeah, she was hot.
But this was good for them.
Put them on an international map, imagining her parents gawking when she talked to the Yakuza family leaders, this was real business. Dangerous, with a lot to lose but so, so much to gain. She felt she made an impression. She wasn't exactly what people expected when they thought of Deadlock. Stark white hair, burning artificial red eyes, skin as pale as paper, and a devil’s smile. And if this was your first time hearin’ of her, people tended to believe it was Cassidy that ran the show, and that made him laugh every time. She made sure they were set up, close by, well guarded and cared for. She was a little old fashion, and to her parents credit they gave her the skills to wine and dine, hospitality.
Shook their hands.
Never looked away.
“What do I call you?” She wasn’t bad with names she just wasn’t sure if she’d insult him by calling him Genji. But it was clear that she called everyone by their last name. Mister Delaware, Mister Bez, though it wasn’t clear to them. She called his father Mister Shimada, and had referred to Genji as such until now. “Mister Shimada just don’t suit you.” she stood in front of the big metal door in the side of the cliffside.
