"I guess working at the grill full time is another option. I'm just not sure if you're seeing the rest of your life like that, but who knows, maybe your dreams are different from mine."
Elijah chuckled. “Matt… I wouldn’t have expected a solution like that from you, of all people. Yes, killing would definitely be faster and easier. But not per definition the worst you can do to people.” But if he was honest with himself… it did not seem too likely that it was the revenge option. There must be a reason it had happened after the ritual, so they were after the hybrid his brother had turned himself into. “You would not?” Elijah shrugged. “I would not be able to say the same if I would be in a desperate need of that information. Then again… I have already shown I am willing to take a few more steps than you.” Maybe it was better to say there weren’t any limits if his family was at stake. “I hope not. I just know I will do everything within my quite extensive power to get Niklaus back, no matter what promises I have to break for that.”
Matt shrugged his shoulders and rolled his eyes. "Look, I'm not the one wanting to kill Damon, but if those people are anything like you guys, I though they'd probably think you guys too." Matt crossed his arms over his chest again and cocked his head a little. Although he didn't agree with it, he had seen way too many vampires kill without even thinking about it. He kinda got it when it was some kinda demon or a killing vampire, but he wasn't completely sure if he would able to do it himself. "You might be walking killing machines..." Matt took a deep breath for a moment. "But it doesn't mean that I forget that you guys are somehow human too." He swallowed. "I don't think I'd be able to hurt people like that." He bent his head and stared at his feet. It was exactly that that made him weak. And it was exactly why he needed to learn how to defense himself. "Not that I'll stand a chance anyway." Matt forced himself to smile a little. "And I guess that's good to know."
“that sounds like a plan, matt, thank you.”
"At least it's something I can do..."

Matt sighed and wished there was something he could tell her to explain how he felt. How defenseless he felt every time something happened and he needed others to save him or to defend him. "I do..." He whispered the words and he licked his lips. "I always need others to protect me against anything." He cocked his head and hid his hands in the pockets of his jeans. "If something happens to you or to anyone else, there is nothing I can do." He took a deep breath. "And I did tell Logan that I won't let anything happen to my friends." He swallowed and bent his head. Although he and Lydia had broken up a while ago, he still loved her in some way. "But I won't mind giving him an extra warning." He forced himself to smile. "And last time we could stop him because he trusted me, right? Maybe it's not that bad to have someone close to him." Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right?
“do you know anyone with a november 30th birthday we could try to do this with?”
"I have no idea if I do. I'm not that good at remembering birthdays, but I'm gonna ask around and see if we can find someone, okay?"
Training with the enemy || Logan & Matt
it was a dick move, he knew it. but if this kid was going to learn how to handle himself, he’s going to have to handle anything that will come his way. so waiting in a tree to jump down and pin the guy in a position that he would die in – that’s one way to start this. logan remembers doing a similar exercise with mack a couple of years ago, but she actually got scared enough she punched him in the face making it a double lesson, with one underlying rule. always be on guard. so that’s matt’s first lesson, hopefully he takes it well.
once matt was in the right position, logan slowly began to climb down before allowing himself to fall right behind the bus boy. Making his fingers into a claw, say if he actually had any, and placed them right on Matt’s neck. “if i was a werewolf, at least a bad one, you’d be dead. so here’s your first lesson in defending yourself, always be on guard. second would be, watch the trees.”
Matt stared at his watch again and sighed. Yesterday the boy had seemed pretty determined to start things thing on time and now he was the one being late. Or maybe the Hale estate was a little too big and they just had not seen each other. To be sure Matt started walking again and eventually he stood still to grab his phone. Maybe he should just...
He couldn't even finish the thought. He felt a hand in his neck and he felt a shiver down his spine. Great. So this was how they were gonna play their game? "Logan..." Matt turned around and crossed his arms over his chest. "You almost gave me a heart attack, okay?" He raised his voice and then calmed down realizing that Logan was right. "But fine. Watch the tress and be on guard. Got it." He looked around to be sure that Logan was around and this time he did take the time to check the trees around him.
“I’m not the man to rule out options, Matt. I don’t see how Damon fits into the revenge option, but who knows, knowing him he might have very well made a few too powerful enemies along the way.” Elijah had to chuckle. Damon wasn’t exactly a loveable personality, and if he managed to piss off Originals, he had no doubt managed to piss of more people. “What is it… you suddenly see the appeal of testing on vampires? I wouldn’t advise to get caught up in that, Matt. It would be very bad for your health, on the longer term.” He shrugged. “I should have learned that a few centuries ago already, but I believe one does try to keep living by what one believes in. I have not given that hope up yet. I don’t think I ever will.”
Matt rolled his eyes and thought about Damon, thinking that he owned the world. Actually, it wasn't that unlikely that he had pissed off a few too mighty people. It would even surprise him if he didn't. But, if he had just pissed them off, they would have killed him instead of taking him, right? "Wouldn't it be easier to just kill Damon?" He decided to say it out loud. "And hey, I can imagine why people would wanna do something like that. I wouldn't wanna do it myself!" He raised his voice and crossed his arms over his chest. "I wouldn't wanna get my knowledge like that." He swallowed and thought about what it would mean to do all those tests and to get the information. He already felt sick by thinking of it. "So, give it a few weeks and your promises are being broken again?"
❝ Oh Derek said it was a good idea? Then it must be a good idea. It’s fine Matt. You now who else might be a good teacher? Maybe Klaus Mikaelson - although I guess he’s busy being kidnapped right now so ask Elijah. ❞
Matt held his breath and swallowed. "I get it that you don't wanna forgive Logan for what he's tried. I didn't either and I'll never will." Matt cocked his head. "But he's a good hunter and he has time to help me to defend me and you guys." He paused for a moment. "Derek will keep an eye on us. If he does anything against anyone of you, Derek will deal with him."
“maybe fun for everyone else but i’ll be there still reminded that i’m older and i don’t like it. i’m such a downer, matt, we can’t escape that. if it wasn’t my birthday, but someone else’s, i’d have fun.”
"So, there is no one else in this town that has a birthday at the same day or so? Maybe you can talk Lydia into combining the two parties and you can just act as if it's a party thrown for someone else? It's gonna be hard, but it's worth a try."
“As a matter of fact, I am.” Of course, the vampire could have simply fled town after escaping death, but somehow he found the coincidence too great. No one had heard from him ever since. That could simply be the result of Damon having no friends, but Elijah had different thoughts. “I will fully accept the fact that he has made enemies in the past, with his behaviour, I just think it is a bit too coincidental that they are the same as ours. Besides… whoever can get their hands on an Original will find another vampire a mere side catch.” Was that arrogance? Maybe… but he knew how hard it was to truly hurt them. The fact that this group had managed to do that, still hurted his pride. “I will not make any promises on that, Matt. Besides, I think we have recently seen that even I am not always able to keep them. I will do what is necessary, even when that costs more lives. Let’s just hope that it won’t be the price we’ll have to pay.”
Matt frowned his eyebrows. For some reason he had understood why they had wanted an original, but he couldn't really understand why they would wanna have Damon too. Yeah, of course, Damon was a vampire and did a lot of stupid things, but he didn't just randomly kill 4 people for a stupid ritual. "So, you don't really believe in that revenge option, which leaves the using them as lab-rats option, right?" Matt looked up again and thought about everything he knew about vampires. They healed better, they never got sick. What if you could recreate something like that to heal humans without needing them to turn into vampire? Or without having to feed them vampire blood that could turn them? "Well, at least you learned your lesson not to make promises you're not gonna keep anyway."
Training with the enemy || Logan & Matt

Matt wouldn't admit it, but he was nervous. His hands were sweaty and he was constantly looking around if he saw something or someone. He wasn't even sure what or who he was afraid of. He knew that they were safely on the Hale property. He also knew that Derek was only one button away from coming to help him out. Just like he knew that for now Logan was on their side and wouldn't hurt his friends.
But the words from Lydia echoed through his head. She had been angry and he wasn't sure if he would ever be able to make up for it. Matt checked his watch again. He was a little early, because he had not wanted to risk being late, and he took a deep breath while he hid his hands in the pockets of his jeans again.
“i’m always prepared for the worst, probably why my first thought is the worst outcome. ah, that would be the price of the hellmouth, nothing seems lucky.”
"So, I guess that means that the real party can only get better than the thing you've come up with. You know, maybe your party will even be some kinda fun!"
“exactly. no demon, fanger, or anything else that goes bump is going to go easy on you. especially if you’re their meal. so i want to make sure your going to be ready for anything.”
"Yeah, that sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow at the Hale property."
A smirk curled Derek’s lips, his eyebrows rising and relaxing again as he spoke. “Nice safe. But when you are ready, I’ll take you up on that.” He didn’t want to push Matt too quickly, the boy too inexperienced to be put to the test right away, his training needing to be thorough if he was going to truly learn how to protect himself and his sister. There were already too many threats looming over them however, the possibility of danger quite high–time wasn’t on their side, and they needed to use the little they had efficiently. He nodded at the other’s question, burying his hands inside the pockets of his jacket. “The front and back yards are large enough, and there’s a gym in the back. It doesn’t have much but there’s a set of weights you can use.” Derek smiled. “That’ll be helpful.”
Matt smiled back. Yeah, technically Derek was his boss, but he felt like one of his best friends. Right now, he seemed like his best friend. For some reason all the supernatural crap was starting to get between him and his friends. They were all dealing with their own problems and they all had to make choices no one actually liked. "Yeah, I hope to get there before the next demon thing shows up." Matt shrugged is shoulders and tried to make it sound like a joke. It wasn't a joke. All this stuff was far from funny and he knew that learning how to fight and how to defend himself was a race against the clock. "Sounds good. I'll let you know when Logan and I will use them, okay?"
Elijah smiled. Matt wasn’t the one to easily give up on questions when he wanted answers. “There are several possibilities, depending on who they are. Revenge, torture… one of the most probable ones in our case. Research, also not to rule out, especially because a certain vampire who never had anything to do with us disappeared at the same time. There might be more options, but these two are on top of my list.” They had created so many enemies over the centuries that each and everyone of them could have come back to haunt them. Something that would not make it easier to find who was responsible for this. “I try to make up for what I have done wrong, Matt. Which means I will put my brother first. Sin gets a completely different meaning when you are the thing that comes closest to being the devil on earth.”
Matt shook his head and pressed his arms a little tighter to his chest. It wasn't that hard to imagine that the Originals had enemies. He was sure that the ritual wasn't their first time killing people for their own benefit. Elijah had said it more than once. "Are you talking about Damon?" Matt had to admit that he had at least not seen him for a while. "Because it's not that hard to imagine that he had made some enemies too." Matt sighed and thought about the research option. Of course, vampires never got ill, never died. He could see why people would wanna know more about them. He just couldn't imagine that people who did nothing but research were capable of taking that many people down at once. "Well, let's hope that while you're trying to make up for stuff, nothing else happens."

Allison is human - Chris is human, they could have helped you. ❞ she didn’t want to be angry at matt, she didn’t have the energy to hate anyone else and matt was definitely on the list of people she wanted to be on good terms with - but logan felt like a betrayal. he was a witch hunter, she didn’t understand how matt could trust him.
Matt bent his head. Yeah, he would have loved to ask Chris and Allison, but he had not talked to them in a while. "Look, I can't just show up and ask them to train me after not talking to them for ages." Matt took a deep breath. "And Derek convinced me to give Logan a chance." Matt swallowed. "He said that for now the guy is on our side."
❛ Which is why it’s understandable that keeping everyone in the dark about Mystic Hills’ latest events seems a better choice; the demons and Hellmouth’s opening has caused enough mayhem as it is. ❜ On the other side, had Jenna been aware of the supernatural world before, she might have still been alive. It was a conflicting matter.
Matt nodded, but he did feel kinda bad about everything. Although he felt kinda worse about the fact that no one seemed to notice that something is wrong. "Yeah, we don't wanna cause any panic." He swallowed and looked around. "It's just hard to believe that they don't see anything."
