A Nuthatch Feathursday
Nuthatches are small arboreal passerine birds belonging to the family Sittidae. Most occupy the temperate woodlands of the Northern Hemisphere. Here in Wisconsin we have two species, the White-breasted (Sitta carolinensis) and Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis). Shown here is the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) from a painting reproduced in our folio volume Birds, The Paintings of Terance James Bond, by British bird artist Terance James Bond, published in Cambridge, England, by the Lutterworth Press in 1988. As the name implies, it breads throughout Europe and much of Asia. Of this painting, Bond writes:
Trees are a passion of mine and the lovely thing about painting the Nuthatch is that I can incorporate a fair portion of the tree trunk in the painting. The infinite range of textures and hues presented by all trees and their barks is always exciting, and in planning the painting . . . I have shown the birds on the old willow, a favourite tree of mine.
