I can’t believe people are still surprised by this. Anime was just starting to become popular in America and they changed OPs because they wanted something catchy to appeal to kids. Butterfly is the better song but I don’t think it would be popular with kids. Another reason is the rights for the song and trying to match the lyrics to the original Japanese song would be hard. Making an original song was probably easier. Sad but true.

Speaking as a German: Like most countries we got a dubbed version of Butter-Fly and the song is counted among the all-time best anime or general kids media songs to ever be released in Germany. It is way more catchy than the US opening, which sounds sadly very generic.

The US dub had some banger songs here and there - but the opening absolutely was not one of them. We know it here because we got the US version of the movie back in the day and we were all so pissed to get the bloody US songs rather than "Leb deinen Traum" and "Wir werden Sieger sein" (our version of Brave Heart)

As another German I can second that.

Our Butterfly dub "Leb deinen Traum" ( "live your dream" ) is immensely popular, everyone in our generation can sing along. My dad is a soccer coach and plays it for the team during practice, still a hit among 20-30 year olds. Every karaoke party that gets into anime territory plays this song.

Second most popular is probably our version of Biggest Dreamer, "Der Größte Träumer".

But all german dubbed Digimon songs are bangers.

I believe just this year, the original singer, Frank Schindel, had a guest appearance at a concert, and the entire audience went wild singing along.

This song was just as popular among kids as the Pokémon intro. No Digi Rap required.

In general the german dub of Digimon is very good and very true to the original.

I strongly believe this one reason why Digimon is so pupolar in Germany with a very dedicated fan base.

As a Dutchy I was always jealous of my German "neighbors" who got so many more seasons of Digimon aired on TV, WITH banger openings, while every iteration of Digimon we got was always opened with the same "Di-di-di--Digimon... Digimon" opening.

Sure, 10 year old Daniël loved it and would sing and dance along, but it didn't have the cultural staying power, even in my own life, as it had in Germany or the 2BAMaster cd for Pokemon.

90s kids were ready to be inspired with beautiful music.

Risk averse localisation agencies were not willing to deliver.

i think it's important to acknowledge that the reason why mastercard/visa has such a stranglehold on american society is because cash is not the main form of payment in the usa. the predominance of card has effectively privatized currency

in japan, one of the reasons why dlsite and other similar websites are able to just remove visa as a payment option instead of changing any of their merchandise (aside from the fact that visa doesn't have a monopoly here) is because cash payments for online transactions remain an option. even if you don't have a jcb credit card or paypay or whatever, you can still pay for your online purchases using cash by taking your barcode to a convenience store, and you can do this for essentially every online vendor, meaning credit card companies can't just impose their moral judgments on your purchases with much repercussion

1. you add whatever porn games or movies or books you want to your cart and go to checkout

2. you select cash payment at conbini as your payment method

3. youre emailed a barcode that you take to the conbini

4. you show it to the cashier, they scan it, and you pay what you owe. note that the cashier does not see what youre buying

Please don't use 'gay panic' that way.

A timely reminder to all younger (and non American) writers out there who didn’t live through it that 'Gay Panic' does not mean your hapless gay/bi/pan blorbo is all a flustered and bad at flirting.

It was a legal defense for beating a gay person, sometimes to death, because the perpetrator thought they were being flirted with and that, somehow, sent them into a homicidal panic. It is a horrible horrible part of queer history. And it wasn't that long ago.

So when you tag your fic 'Gay Panic', it does not mean "here is my cute fandom child being a mess", it means this fic has homophobia and possibly someone dying from it. So if that's not what your fic contains, it's not the tag that should be used.

It's okay if you don't know the history! But here's your notice. I wish we could pretend that the phrase is something that could be reclaimed, but we can't. We especially can't with the current attacks on transpeople in the US and UK where we are seeing the term and ethos behind the term coming back.
