A/N: I just need to say, I don't actually think Ted is that homophobic. To me he's like period-typical homophobic but not 'I'm going to punch my son's boyfriend in the face' homophobic. BUT just imagine he's this bad for the angst of it all.
Mike watched longingly as Will, like a gentleman, grabbed Robin’s hand and guided her up to the dance floor. He smiled when he saw them all. Bride and groom, maid of honour and best man. Nancy and Jonathan, Robin and Will. They swayed slowly, dancing the first dance of the evening.
Mike felt at peace. His sister had just gotten married to a guy he actually liked. After almost a year of not seeing each other, the whole party were finally reunited again. Everything felt good. There was just one thing missing...
“You jealous?” Lucas said way to close to Mike’s ear, causing him to jump. He somehow found the strength to rip his eyes away from Will. Lucas, Max and Dustin were all sat at his table. He’d completely tuned them out since Will had got up to dance.
“What?” Mike said cluelessly.
“You’re staring again. You scared Robin’s gonna steal him away from you?” Dustin asked.
“Ha, funny,” Mike replied dryly.
“I wish she would. He could do so much better than you, Wheeler,” Max chuckled.
Mike shot her a scathing look then sighed.
“I just wish we could do that. Out here. In public.”
The truth was, Mike was jealous of Robin. He was jealous because she could dance with his boyfriend in public like it was nothing. They could twirl and sway and laugh on the dance floor and no one would bat an eye. Some people had even started whisperings that the two were dating. Oh, how wrong they were, on both counts.
“I know, man,” Lucas said, placing a comforting hand on Mike’s shoulder. “It sucks.”
“Couldn’t you just... do it?” Dustin suggested. “I mean, most of the people here already know about Will.”
“Yeah, I don’t think anyone here would be that shocked if they found out about you too,” Max smirked.
“Wow, thanks,” Mike scoffed.
“Just being honest.”
“You always are.”
Mike turned his eyes back to Will. The first dance was almost over. Then the dance floor would be a free for all. Most people were already half drunk. The floor would be crowded. Maybe no one would even notice them.
But no, Mike couldn’t risk it.
“No, I can’t,” he sighed. “My dad...”
Lucas, Dustin, and even Max, gave him a sympathetic smile.
Mike wasn’t scared anymore. Not of most people anyway. Moving to New York had been the most freeing thing he’d ever done. He’d finally allowed himself to feel; to understand the feelings that used to eat him alive. The New York air wasn’t as heavy as Hawkins. Without the looming presence of smalltown beliefs Mike finally found himself.
At the age of nineteen he did the thing he should’ve done when he was fifteen and told Will that he loved him. Six months later he told the rest of the party who he was. After a year Nancy, Jonathan, Steve and Robin knew. He wasn’t scared to be around them, lacing his fingers with Will’s just like Lucas and Max did. Like it was normal, because it was normal.
But not everyone thought that way. Every time he came back to Hawkins Mike felt that familiar air beginning to choke him again. When he visited his childhood home with Will he felt like a criminal. He regressed back to being the shameful teenager he used to be.
His father never liked Will. He always hated the endless sleepovers they had as kids. Always made remarks about Will not being like Mike’s other friends. Mike was certain his dad knew what Will was, even if no one had ever told him outright. But, despite the judgy looks and subtle comments, he’d never actually accused Will of anything. He preferred to pretend that people like that didn’t exist. If only he knew his son was one of them.
So, no, Mike couldn’t ‘just do it’ like Dustin suggested. He couldn’t just get up on the dance floor with Will like they didn’t have a care in the world. Because Ted Wheeler was sat in the corner of the room with a beer in his hand, pretending to listen to whatever Holly was telling him.
“Well, you better not try to dance with me just because you can’t dance with him,” Max quipped.
“Oh, don’t worry. I’d rather dance with Lucas than with you,” Mike replied.
“Hey, I’m a great dancer,” Lucas complained.
“Sure you are,” Max said sarcastically.
Just then, applause erupted as the first dance ended. Mike watched as Robin wrapped Will up into a tight hug. They let each other go just as the DJ switched to another cheesy love song. As people began swarming the dance floor, Will made a beeline for Mike.
Mike still hadn’t recovered from how good Will looked in a suit. As he walked towards him he wanted to get up and run to him. He wanted to pull him close and kiss him and let everyone know he was his.
“Miss me?” Will asked. He smiled as he sat down next to Mike.
“Like hell,” Mike replied. He let his hand drop under the table to grab Will’s hand.
“He’s been over here yearning for you like a sad little puppy,” Dustin added.
“Aww,” Will swooned. “You’re cute.”
Mike couldn’t help but blush.
“You guys are gross. Lucas, let’s dance,” Max said.
Lucas jumped out of his seat and took Max’s hand.
“After you, m’lady.”
They disappeared out into the darkened dancefloor.
“Oh shit,” Dustin said all of a sudden, his eyes trained on the middle of the dance floor. “Steve’s trying to dance with one of Jonathan’s cool movie star friends. I gotta go save him from the embarrassment.”
And just like that Dustin was gone too, leaving Mike and Will alone at the table.
They stared at each other comfortably for a beat. Then Mike leaned forward and put his lips to Will’s ear. It wasn’t weird. If anyone noticed he'd just say the music was loud and Will couldn’t hear him.
“Have I told you how handsome you look today?” he asked, a smile curling onto his lips.
“Only about a hundred times,” Will replied.
“Damn, not enough.”
Will giggled and squeezed Mike’s hand which was still holding his under the table.
Mike took a sip of his beer and slid a glass full of red liquid over to Will.
“Here, I got this for you,” he said.
“Thanks.”
Will took a long sip, surveying the room as he did. Mike noticed his eyes hover over the dance floor.
“I’m sorry. I wish I could dance with you,” he said, sighing.
“It’s okay,” Will smiled, always so understanding.
They both watched the dance floor pretending they didn’t wish they were up there too. Jonathan and Nancy were still up, wrapped up in each other. Lucas and Max were jumping up and down, bodies stuck together. Even Dustin was now dancing with the girl he’d just gone to save from Steve’s flirting.
“You boys not dancing?” Karen Wheeler’s voice snapped both boys’ eyes away from the drove of dancing bodies.
“Huh?” Mike grunted.
“Just having a drink, Mrs Wheeler,” Will said, his voice with that charismatic tone he’d picked up in New York. “Then I’ll be up there, don’t you worry.”
“Good. I want you boys to have fun,” Karen replied, sloshing the wine that was in the glass she held as she shimmied away.
“God, she’s so drunk already. She’s going to embarrass herself. And me,” Mike moaned, leaning his forehead on his hand.
“Speaking of embarrassing...” Will looked in dismay at his mom and Hopper attempting to dance at the side of the dance floor. Unsurprisingly, Hopper had two left feet and they tripped over each other, laughing when Joyce nearly knocked over one of Nancy’s friends.
“I hope we’re that embarrassing when we’re older,” Mike smiled, turning to look at Will.
Will beamed back at him. His smile was like a ray of sunshine, shooting right into Mike’s heart and making him feel warm.
They sat gazing at each other, trying their best not to look completely infatuated with each other, until the song changed again and the opening riff of ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ began to play. Will face lit up.
“Go dance,” Mike said. More than anything he wanted Will to have fun. He deserved nothing less.
“Oh, you’re coming too,” Will said as he got up.
“Will...”
“Mike, it’s not a slow song. Everyone’s dancing together.” Will indicated towards the dance floor. He was right. Everyone was dancing in a circle, no one overly touchy with anyone else. Well, expect for Dustin who seemed to be getting on particularly well with the movie star.
“Okay,” Mike smiled, following Will onto the dance floor.
“Oh, look who decided to show up,” Lucas shouted over the booming speakers as he slapped Mike on the back.
“The floor looked a little dead so I thought I’d come liven it up a little,” Mike yelled back.
Mike danced with Lucas, Max and Robin. He could see over Robin’s shoulder that Will was dancing with Jonathan. He was twirling and giggling and bumping into everyone. He looked so happy. Mike couldn’t stop beaming.
“God, you’re so cheesy, Wheeler,” Max laughed.
They all danced together for a couple of songs. Eventually, Will joined the group. His body hit against Mike’s every so often, driving him insane.
Then another slow love song started to play. Mike went stiff.
“It’s okay, let’s go,” Will said, seeing Mike panic. “Leave these lovebirds to it.” He blew a kiss towards Max and Lucas.
Mike followed Will across the dance floor, past the huge glass doors of the venue which led out into a rose garden. Suddenly, inspiration struck. As they reached the edge of the dance floor Mike grabbed Will’s arm.
“Do you want to go outside?” he asked.
Will glanced towards doors. There were plenty of bushes to hide behind. He knew what Mike was thinking.
“Sure,” Will said.
Mike let go of Will’s arm again. He looked around the room. His father was at the bar ordering another beer, facing away from the rest of the room.
Mike and Will walked quickly towards the doors, side by side, fingers hovering an inch from each other. Mike quickly glanced towards the dance floor. Lucas caught his eye and raised his eyebrows knowingly.
A light breeze hit Mike’s face as he stepped outside. As soon as they turned the corner, tucking behind a rose bush, Mike’s hands were on Will’s waist.
“I missed you today,” Mike said, smiling as Will’s hands snaked around his neck.
“Mike, you were with me all day,” Will replied.
They began swaying back and forth to the muffled music which penetrated outside.
“Yeah, but I couldn’t do this all day.”
Mike angled his head down and kissed Will softly. Will instantly melted.
“You know you’re like technically my brother-in-law now,” Will laughed as he pulled away from Mike’s lips.
“Ew, oh my God, why would you say that?” Mike said, screwing up his face.
“Do I disgust you now?” Will asked.
“Yeah, I think we should break up,” Mike joked.
“You’re an idiot.”
Mike caught Will’s lips with his again. They swayed back and forth for a few minutes, enjoying the silence and safety of outside. Will rested his head against Mike’s chest and Mike let his face fall into Will’s hair.
“Mike?” Will said after a few minutes.
“Yeah?”
“Can we please tell my parents?”
Mike sighed. This question had become a common occurrence. And Mike would’ve said yes. He had no problem with Will’s parents knowing who he was. The only problem was...
“Will, Hopper already hates me. If he finds out I’m dating another one of his kids, I think he’ll kill me.”
“He won’t, Mike. And he doesn’t hate you. He knows I have boyfriend, and he knows that that boyfriend makes me very happy. They keep asking when they can meet him,” Will explained.
Mike couldn’t have been more thankful for how patient Will had been with him. He gave him time to figure out how to be himself. He didn’t complain when Mike wanted to keep their relationship between the two of them. He didn’t say a word when Mike introduced Will as his friend to anyone they met.
Mike felt like it was finally time to give Will something back.
“Fine, but if he kills me I’m coming back to haunt you for the rest of your life.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less.”
Mike kissed Will again. Deeper this time, pulling him closer so their bodies were pressed together.
“I love you, Will Byers,” Mike whispered.
“I love you, Mike Wheeler,” Will smiled back.
Meanwhile, Ted Wheeler had grown tired of the blasting music and irresponsible young adults that were dancing around the room. The packet of cigarettes he’d brought with him were burning a hole in his pocket.
Ted wasn’t a smoker, but sometimes he needed a little hit when he was feeling particularly vexed. Watching his daughter marry that creepy Byers kid was certainly one of those vexing moments. Watching his wife dance drunkenly with a random twenty-five year old was the last straw.
So, Ted excused himself from the conversation he was having with his father-in-law and headed for the glass double doors.
He sat down on one of the benches by the door and pulled out a cigarette. He lit it and sighed as the first puffs entered his lungs. It was peaceful outside, with nothing but the night sky and the rose bushes and...
Ted’s ears suddenly pricked up. He could still hear the music blaring from inside, but he could also hear voices. Voices coming from outside.
He took another drag of his cigarette before getting up and walking towards the voices. They were still muffled and Ted cursed his deteriorating hearing. He inched closer to one of the rose bushes and peeked through its leaves.
Through the brush of green and red he saw the back of his son, dancing with someone who was hidden by Mike’s body.
They swayed in time with the muted music, turning slowly in a circle. And finally, after a few sways, they turned around so Ted could see Mike’s dance partner.
His jaw dropped when he saw Will Byers dancing with Mike. Without thinking, he took another drag of his cigarette. Anger consumed him but he didn’t act yet; he needed to be sure. So, he listened.
“Is Robin as good at dancing as me?” Mike said into Will’s ear.
“So much better. You could really learn from her,” Will giggled.
“You know I heard my grandma whispering about you two. I think she thinks you’re dating her.”
“Oh, did I not tell you? I’m actually straight, and so is she, and we’re in love. We’re running away together tonight,” Will joked.
“Oh no. How could you, William. I’ll never forgive you,” Mike replied sarcastically.
“I hope you can accept me. I know the concept of liking women might be difficult for you to understand.”
Mike chuckled lowly, moving a piece of hair out of Will’s face.
“You know, you didn’t sound straight last night when we were-”
“What the hell?!”
Both Will and Mike jumped out of their own skin at the sound of someone shouting. Mike felt his heart sink into hell when he turned around to see the source of the voice. He immediately took his hands off Will.
“Dad!” he said, taking in the look of complete and utter revulsion that was spread across his face.
But Ted’s eyes weren’t on his son. They were on Will.
“I knew it,” he said, shaking his head. “I always knew you’d to this to him.”
Before Mike had time to register what was going on his dad was trudging towards Will, his cigarette falling out of his hand. Mike watched what happened next as though it was a horror movie he couldn’t look away from.
A look of pure terror flashed across Will’s face before Ted’s fist collided with it. Will’s hand immediately flew to his face as he stumbled backwards so he was no longer hidden from the view of the doors.
“Stay away from my son,” Ted spat.
When Mike’s body finally decided to listen to his brain he rushed towards Will. He cupped Will’s face in his hands, not caring that his father was looking.
“Oh my God,” he breathed, watching the skin around Will’s eye turn red. Then a trickle of deep red blood began dripping from his nose, reminding him of a time in his life he’d rather forget. “Are you okay?”
Tears stung Will’s eyes and his bottom lip quivered. He nodded unconvincingly.
“Son, get away from that faggot,” Ted said sternly, grabbing Mike’s shoulder.
“Don’t you dare call him that,” Mike snapped, pulling himself out of his dad’s grasp.
“Son, he’s corrupted you. I had a feeling this would happen eventually. Just get away from him and we can fix this.”
Mike felt anger like he’d never felt before bubbling inside him. He thought that when his father found out about him he’d be terrified. But he wasn’t. All he felt was blinding rage.
“What do you mean fix this?”
“You. He’s confused you or something. Made you think you’re... like him. But you’re not, Michael. My son is not one of them.”
Mike felt sick. His dad was looking at Will like he was the most disgusting thing he’d ever seen. He couldn’t understand how anyone could look at Will with anything other than utter adoration.
“Yes, I am, dad. I’m ‘one of them’. I’m what you’re so scared of,” Mike shouted.
“Michael, don’t say that.” Ted’s frown deepened.
“Don’t say what? That I’m gay? That Will is my boyfriend? That I’m in love with him?”
Mike didn’t know where his strength was coming from. Everything he was saying were the things he was most afraid to say. Yet saying them to his father’s face was the most empowering thing he’d ever done.
“Stop this, Michael. This is-”
“Will,” a voice shouted from towards the venue.
Hopper had noticed Will standing outside from the glass doors. When he saw the blood running from his nose he assumed the worst.
“Will, are you alright?” Hopper said, racing towards him. But when he saw the redness around Will’s eye he knew this wasn’t the kind of nosebleed he used to be so accustomed to.
Will didn’t nod this time. He let out a choked sob and shook his head.
Hopper turned his eyes to Mike and Ted. Mike had a pained expression on his face from watching Will breakdown. Ted’s hand was still clenched in a fist. Hopper put two and two together.
“Did you hit my son, Ted?” he asked, his voice soft but frighteningly threatening.
“I wouldn’t have to hit your son if he wasn’t corrupting my son,” Ted replied.
“He didn’t corrupt me, dad,” Mike sighed.
Mike felt Hopper’s eyes on him. He looked up and met them staring back at him. Sure, he was finally okay with Hopper knowing about him and Will, but not like this.
“I caught them... canoodling behind the bushes,” Ted said, screwing up his face.
“We were dancing, Hop.” Mike rolled his eyes.
Hopper flicked his eyes between the two Wheelers, then decided it would be easier to deal with family.
“Will, how long has this been going on,” he asked, the tone of his voice sweetening.
“Umm, nearly three years,” Will confessed, turning to Mike for confirmation. Mike nodded.
“Three years?!” Ted blew up again. “Oh God, this is worse than I thought.”
Now the look of disgust Ted had been shooting at Will was redirected to Mike. Mike knew exactly why his dad was so mad. He knew from the dozens of lectures he’d given him as a kid. ‘Queers’, as he called them, could corrupt anyone who was weak enough to fall for it. Catch them in the ‘early stages’ and they could be ‘fixed’. But the longer you spent being corrupted, the harder it was to be ‘normal’ again.
Ted thought he could convert Mike, but Mike wanted to make it very clear that that wasn’t possible.
“I’ve been with Will for three years, but I’ve always been like this, dad. Will didn’t curse me or corrupt me. This is who I am. You can’t fix me.”
Ted was practically steaming with fury. “You’re both disgusting,” he hissed.
“You watch your mouth, Wheeler,” Hopper said, moving towards Ted. Mike liked how small his dad looked with Hopper towering over him.
“What the hell is going on out here?”
Mike’s attention was drawn away from his dad and Hopper when he heard the voice of his sister. She and Jonathan walked towards the group, her long white gown staining green where it trailed along the grass.
“Oh shit, Will,” Jonathan said as soon as he saw the state of Will’s face. He raced over to him and immediately started examining his face.
“Guys, what’s going on?” Nancy repeated.
Mike wanted desperately for someone else to speak. But Ted’s lips were set in a tight line, and Hopper was looking at Mike expectantly. Will was too busy mumbling to Jonathan.
“Dad found out about me and Will. Hence...” Mike motioned towards Will’s face.
The anger that took over Nancy’s body was palpable. It made Mike want to run away, even though he wasn’t the one she was mad at.
“What the fuck, dad?” she said, shaking her head.
“Language, Nancy,” Ted reprimanded.
“Do you think I give a fuck about language right now? Did you punch him?”
“Yes, I did. Because he was dancing with your brother. But apparently he’s a queer now too so I should really punch him as well,” Ted argued, as if he was right.
Mike fought back tears. He knew his dad wouldn’t like his relationship with Will. But he thought maybe he could get him to understand. Never in a million years did he think his dad would hit Will, or threaten to hit him.
“I need you to leave,” Nancy seethed.
“Nancy, I’m your father. This is your wedding.”
“And you’ve ruined it. Get out,” Nancy said stubbornly.
“Nancy, come on-”
“She told you to leave,” Jonathan said, coming over to stand beside Nancy, leaving Will by himself.
Mike shifted over so he was standing next to Will. He looked into his sad eyes and took his hand, rubbing his thumb comfortingly against Will’s.
“Ha, so you’re all completely fine with this,” Ted scoffed, eyes immediately locking on Mike and Will’s intertwined fingers. “You all think this is normal.”
“I think that Mike seems to make my son very happy, and that’s all I care about,” Hopper said.
Ted shook his head in disbelief. He had no one to back him. He was about to turn around and storm off when they all heard the sound of more voices approaching.
“Ted, what are you doing out here?” Karen slurred while hanging onto a much more sober Joyce.
“Oh God,” Mike breathed. More people to deal with. Mike was starting to wonder if the entire guest list was going to come outside eventually. Will squeezed his hand. Even when in pain he was thinking of Mike.
“Actually, I was just leaving,” Ted said.
“What? Why?”
Mike didn’t want to explain everything again, but luckily, he didn’t have to. Nancy and Hopper took that responsibility this time.
Mike focussed on Will’s breathing while everything was rehashed again. He didn’t want to hear his dad insult him, or Will, anymore. He and Will stood hand in hand, anchoring each other.
“Honey, is this true?” Karen said, looking down at Mike and Will’s hands, and then up to his face.
Mike just nodded, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall.
Just like her daughter, an unbridled rage rose up in Karen. Mike knew how badass she could be after a few glasses of wine.
“Ted, you’re going to go home, pack a bag, and get out of my goddamn house,” she said furiously.
“Karen, not you too. This is our son,” Ted pleaded.
“Exactly. Mike is our son and we should support him no matter what he does. Now leave.”
Ted shook his head, his mouth hanging open.
“You’re all going to hell,” he said, before turning around and beginning to walk away.
“Oh, Ted,” Joyce finally spoke up.
Ted instinctually turned around and was greeted by a fist to the face. He grunted in pain, his face flushing with embarrassment.
“Don’t you dare ever touch my son again or I will end you,” Joyce snarled.
Like the pathetic man that he was Ted scarpered away. Mike breathed a sigh of relief and pulled Will into his chest, not caring who saw them clinging to each other. Everyone knew now anyway.
No one said anything for a while and Mike was painfully aware of everyone staring at him and Will. But Will seemed unfazed by their staring. He pulled his head away from Mike’s chest and looked up at him. The redness around his eye was slowly turning purple and a patch of blood had dried just below his nose.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“No, I’m sorry,” Karen said, moving towards Mike and Will. “I had no idea this was happening.”
Will pulled away from Mike’s embrace so he was facing Karen, Hopper and Joyce. Nancy gave Mike a knowing look as if to say ‘we’ll leave you to it’ before she and Jonathan slipped back into the party. This was a moment for the parents.
“How could you have known? I didn’t want you to know,” Mike said.
“Why not, honey?”
“Because of him. Because I knew he’d hate it.”
“Will, I’m so sorry he did that to you. I should’ve left him a long time ago.”
“It’s okay, Mrs Wheeler. It’s not your fault.”
“So, Will, this is the boyfriend you’ve been telling us about but never let us meet?” Joyce asked.
“Yeah,” Will said shyly, biting his lip.
“I’m sorry, Mrs Byers. It’s my fault he didn’t tell you,” Mike apologised. “I... It took me a lot longer than Will to be okay with who I am.”
“Oh baby,” Karen said, springing forward and wrapping Mike up in a hug. “I love you no matter what, okay?”
“Mhm,” Mike nodded, letting a few tears spill over. At least, even if his dad hated him, his mom had enough love for the both of them.
Then Joyce stepped forward to hug Will, caressing his face. “You need to get some ice on that, sweetheart.”
“I’m fine, mom,” Will said. “I just want to go enjoy the rest of the party and pretend this never happened.”
“Okay,” Joyce sighed, recognising her overprotectiveness and stepping back. “Meet you back in there.”
Karen let go of Mike and she and Joyce receded back into the party, heads together in conversation.
Now only Hopper stood in front of Will and Mike, his hands on his hips. Mike let out a shaky breath.
“I’ll never get rid of you will I, Wheeler?” he said.
Mike cleared his throat nervously. “Uh, I hope not. I don’t plan on leaving Will any time soon.”
He saw Will smile out of the corner of his eye.
“You better not. I’ve had a headstone with your name on it since ‘84. Now, I’m going back in there to drink my body weight in beer. No funny business in the bushes, okay?”
“Yes, sir,” Mike said stiffly.
“Ew, gross,” Will laughed.
Hopper flashed them a genuine smile before turning around and heading back inside.
Only when everyone left did Mike properly comprehend everything that had just happened. And that’s when the panic hit him.
“Holy shit,” he panted, suddenly unable to breath. His entire body started shaking.
Will grabbed both his arms to stop him from pacing. He looked deeply into his eyes.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he said soothingly. “It’s over. Breathe.”
Mike felt weak. Will was the one who’d been punched in the face and insulted, and he was comforting Mike.
Mike’s coming out had been gradual so far, only telling a few people at a time. People he knew would be fine with it, in an environment he was comfortable in, having planned exactly what he wanted to say.
In the last fifteen minutes the four people he’d been most nervous to tell had all found out in a way he couldn’t control. Talk about ripping off the band-aid.
Mike focussed on his breathing, syncing it up with Will’s until his heart wasn’t bursting out of his chest anymore.
“I’m sorry. I can’t believe he did that to you,” Mike said, running his fingers over Will’s bruise.
“Mike, stop apologising. I’m fine.”
“Did it hurt?”
“Well, yeah. I got punched in the face,” Will said honestly.
“Fuck. That asshole,” Mike seethed.
“Mike,” Will said in that tone that instantly made him shut up. “I don’t want to think about it anymore, okay? Can we just go and get drunk and enjoy the party.”
Mike caved. “At least let me clean you up first.”
Mike led Will back into the venue and they headed straight for the bathroom, trying not to draw attention to themselves. But, of course, that was impossible.
“Hey guys, where were y- oh my God,” Dustin said when he saw Will’s face. “What the fuck happened?”
Lucas and Max were beside Dustin with equally concerned expressions on their faces.
“I don’t want to get into it right now. We’ll be back in a minute,” Mike said, dragging Will by the hand towards the bathroom, past droves of people.
When they got to the bathroom Mike turned around to see that Will was smiling.
“What?” he said, running the tap.
“You held my hand in public,” Will grinned.
“Yeah, I guess I did.”
Mike smiled to himself as he grabbed a paper towel from the dispenser. He hadn’t even thought about it. He’d just done it. Now that his parents, and Will’s, knew about him, telling everyone else seemed almost easy.
He knew there would be plenty of other people like his father. People who would hurt him, people who would hurt Will, if they knew who they were. But Mike would be ready for them this time. He felt stronger now that he had his friends, his mom, and Will’s parents on his side. They were the only people that mattered.
Mike patted the bathroom counter, encouraging Will to hop up on it. Will obeyed, sitting himself between the two sinks while Mike wet the paper towel. He then slotted himself between Will’s legs and wiped the crusted blood away from Will’s nose. He pressed a cold paper towel against Will’s eye, causing Will to inhale sharply.
“I don’t understand how anyone could ever want to hurt you.” Mike lamented, moving the paper towel away for a second to place a quick kiss on Will’s bruise.
“Plenty of people have hurt me, Mike. Including you.”
Mike hated thinking about who he once was. A confused, angry, repressed asshole of a teenager. He hadn’t been that person in a long time, but still it haunted him.
“I promise to never hurt you ever again,” Mike whispered, taking hold of Will’s hand. “And if I do you can send Hop to kill me.”
Mike finished cleaning Will up and then they returned to the party. After minutes of begging to know what happened, they finally explained the situation to Lucas, Max and Dustin. Mike didn’t want to dwell on it. What happened that night was difficult, but it also showed him that the only people he needed in his life were the people who accepted him.
Mike spent the rest of the night dancing with his friends, his family, and most importantly, with Will. Because from that night on Mike decided he didn’t want to hide anymore. He didn’t care what anyone thought of him. He didn’t care if they judged him.
Mike Wheeler loved Will Byers, and he’d die before he let someone hurt him ever again.

Summary: It’s the day before Will Byers’ wedding and all the planning he’s been doing for months is finally about to pay off. He’s going to walk down the aisle and make Carlton his husband. But a knock at the door and the return of a familiar face throws all his plans out the window.

Content: Will Byers x Mike Wheeler, Will Byers x Carlton (ew), angst, hopeful ending, Will Byers POV, love confessions, first kiss, jealous Mike, cheating
A/N: This is inspired by this tweet. It has absolutely consumed me so I needed to write it. Also peep the bit of dialogue I lowkey stole from Little Women.
Will looked himself up and down in the mirror and took and deep breath. As he exhaled he let all his anxieties blow away into the stuffy air of his apartment. All the working and planning and stressing of the last few months was finally about to pay off. Tomorrow when he walked down the aisle, Carlton would be waiting for him. They’d exchange vows and rings. They’d cry and laugh and dance. And then they’d be husbands.
Will would be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous as hell. Of course he was. Wasn’t marriage supposed to be a little scary? Not that this was a real marriage anyway. It was more of a celebration of their relationship. Will wished that he could celebrate his love for Carlton openly and legally. But a small gathering of all their friends and family at his parent's cabin in Montauk was enough for him.
Everyone was coming. Max, Lucas, Dustin, Jonathan, Nancy, Robin, Steve and – well, maybe not everyone. Will had sent Mike an invitation along with everyone else, but he hadn’t replied. He hadn’t called. He hadn’t sent him a letter. He hadn't done any of that in a long time.
At first Will was hurt that Mike had decided to stop being his best friend. But eventually he realised it was a blessing in disguise. Mike’s lack of contact gave Will room to get over him. Properly this time. He’d spent tireless years of his life trying to fall out of love with Mike and finally, after moving to the city and losing touch for good, he got over him. He met a guy, then another, then Carlton. And the rest, as they say, is history.
But when it came to making the wedding invitations, Will knew he couldn’t leave Mike out. He told himself he’d be fine. He was over Mike. He had been for years. He could think of nothing better than having his former best friend at his wedding.
But then Mike didn’t reply.
Will called Lucas and Dustin but he’d pulled away from them too. He stopped calling and stopped answering their calls. Last anyone had heard of him he was at a book signing in New York. Just two blocks away from Will’s apartment. And he hadn’t even come to say hi.
So, Mike had gone completely radio silent on all of them. Will couldn’t help but start to feel a tremor of worry rattle in his chest. He knew Mike hadn’t left Hawkins. He knew he hadn’t let go of the trauma they’d endured. He knew this because every book Mike wrote was about their experiences, fictionalised into stories about monsters and friendship and stolen childhoods. Knights and sorcerers and forbidden love.
Will recalled the first time he saw the cover of Mike’s first book. The knight looked exactly like Mike, only he was far more muscular, and his hair was a little longer. Will chuckled to himself then turned his eyes to the sorcerer. She had long brown hair with full bangs, and she donned a regal purple cloak. It was El to a tee. Except she seemed to have a few more moles on her face.
So, Mike was allowing himself to be swallowed up by his grief. So be it. If he didn’t want to celebrate his best friend’s wedding, then that was on him. If he wanted to completely ignore all of his friends and become a totally brilliant but painfully lonely best-selling author, that’s fine. Will wasn’t going to let Mike’s self-pity ruin his day.
Trouble is, he already was. Will snapped out of his thoughts, which had somehow become exclusively about Mike in the last ten minutes. He took one last look in the mirror and gave himself a shake before heading out his bedroom door. He had to dodge the freshly pressed black tuxedo that hung in the doorway, waiting to be worn the following day.
Will set about sorting out whatever last minute things he needed to do. It was currently two o’clock and Jonathan was coming over at five to drive him down to Montauk. Carlton was with his parents, and they were driving down to a motel just outside Montauk later that day. Something about not wanting to see the groom before the wedding and all that.
So, Will had three hours of alone time before Jonathan came. He checked he had everything he needed in his bags. And then checked again. He contemplated trying on his suit one last time but decided against it in case he got it wrinkled. He called his mom to make sure everything was looking good on her end. Then he didn’t know what to do. He still had over two hours until Jonathan was due to arrive, but just sitting down and watching TV seemed wrong. His hands were too shaky to pick up a paintbrush. His legs too like jelly to go for a walk.
But then, as if by some divine miracle, there was a knock on the door. Jonathan must’ve got out of work early, Will thought, plastering a smile on his face as he went to get the door. But when he was only halfway across the kitchen, it banged again. An aggressive, frantic, unrelenting bang.
“Jesus, Jonathan, I’m coming,” Will yelled, reaching for the key which hung by the door. “What, are you gonna piss yourself or something? Give me a minute.”
Will fumbled clumsily with the lock. The knocking continued until he finally loosened the rusted lock and swung the door open.
“Seriously, Jonathan, what the-”
Will’s breath caught in his throat when he looked up to find that it wasn’t Jonathan at the door. It was-
“Mike,” he exclaimed, every feature on his face turning down.
Mike looked utterly mesmerised. He looked Will up and down about five times in three seconds, as if he was making up for all the years he hadn’t seen him.
“What are you-”
“Don’t marry him,” Mike interrupted, his voice hoarse and pained. His chest was heaving, as if he’d been running.
“What?” Will asked. He was already confused as to why Mike was even there. But hearing him say that made him completely malfunction.
“Don’t marry him,” Mike repeated, louder this time, with even more hurt in his voice.
Will stood dumbfounded, hand still gripping the door. He could swing it closed in Mike’s face if he really wanted to. And a part of him really did want to. He hadn’t seen Mike in years, and now he was showing up at his door and telling him not to get married. Suddenly all his confusion melted away into rage.
“A hello would be nice,” he hissed. “I haven’t heard from you in four years. I haven’t seen you in five.”
“Just don’t do it,” Mike sighed, ignoring Will.
Will stared back at him in seething disbelief. He scoffed and shook his head.
“You’re unbelievable,” he chuckled angrily. “You...”
Will could’ve cursed Mike for losing contact with him. He could’ve shouted in his face and hit him and told him to leave. But he didn’t. He looked at Mike properly for the first time and acknowledged how awful he looked.
He was wearing a faded sweater with wrinkled black pants. His hair was greasy and unkempt. Horn rimmed glasses balanced on his nose, but his face was gaunt and pale. Paler than he used to be. He looked like a ghost.
“Are you okay?” Will asked, the anger in his voice softening into concern.
“No,” Mike said bluntly.
Will sighed and stepped back, giving Mike room to get through the door. “Come in.”
Inviting Mike in was like inviting a vampire in. Once he had permission to enter, he’d suck and suck the life out of Will until he was completely drained; a shell of what he once was. But Mike was also addicting. It was like every time he came calling Will lifted his chin, exposing his pulsing vein for Mike to pounce on.
“How’ve you been?” Will asked casually as Mike surveyed the apartment. His eyes wandered around the room, taking in every detail. Then his gaze landed on the tuxedo hanging in the doorway. He walked towards it.
“You wearing this tomorrow?” he asked, completely dodging Will’s question.
“Yes,” Will replied. “But Mike, why are you-”
“Don’t do it,” Mike said again, reaching his hand up to caress the yellow pocket square that peeked out of the breast pocket.
“Why do you keep saying that?” Will threw his hands up in frustration. He had been trying to ignore Mike’s repeated pleas, but he couldn’t anymore.
“Because I don’t want you to marry him.”
Rage bubbled up in Will again, and this time he didn’t push it down.
“Mike, you can’t just show up here after years of not talking to me and tell me you don't want me to get married. That makes no sense. You’ve never even met Carlton,” he shouted.
“I don’t need to meet him. It wouldn’t matter who you were marrying. I wouldn’t want you to marry him no matter who he is.” Mike’s voice was calm. Eerily calm. Like a peaceful sea before a storm.
Will didn’t understand. He wasn’t even sure if this was real. Maybe he was dreaming and his brain was plaguing him with sick nightmares before the happiest day of his life. He had a sudden urge to pinch himself.
“What, so, you don’t want me to get married ever?” Will asked.
“Not necessarily,” Mike shrugged.
Will was at a loss. He was starting to think that maybe Mike’s self-induced seclusion had driven him insane.
“Mike, if you don’t stop speaking in riddles, I’m going to kick you out.”
“Okay, sorry.”
“Why didn’t you reply to my invitation? Where have you been? Why did you stop picking up my calls?” Every question left Will’s lips at once and Mike looked overwhelmed.
“I...” he began. “I’m sorry.”
“Stop apologising and answer the questions.” Will’s tone was sharp. He could see that he was hurting Mike. He could see from the minute Mike walked into the apartment that he was broken. But he knew he had to keep him at an arm's length. For his own sake.
Mike swallowed nervously. He moved away from the tuxedo and hovered beside the couch.
“I didn’t reply because... because I didn’t know what to say.”
“It was a yes or no question. Are you coming or are you not,” Will spat.
“It’s not that simple,” Mike said quietly. The pain behind his eyes seemed to be coming closer and closer to the surface.
“It’s actually incredibly simple, Mike. You pick up the phone, dial my number and say yes or no. Or, sorry, do you not have a phone anymore? That would explain why you went completely MIA on everyone.”
Mike let out a long, defeated sigh. “You don’t get it.”
“What don’t I get, Mike?” Will was starting to tire of Mike’s ambiguity.
“It was so easy for you to just move on with your life. You all just packed your bags and left like nothing happened. And now you're getting married. Does he even know what you went through?”
This was the most Mike had said to Will since he’d arrived, but Will wished he’d kept his mouth shut.
“You think this has been easy for me?” he shook his head in disbelief. “You think I don’t wake up most nights screaming? You think I don’t still see Henry in my nightmares? That I don’t feel the Mind Flayer’s presence every time it gets cold outside? Mike, if you came here for pity then get out.”
“No, I didn’t. I just... Does he know?”
Will recalled the countless times he’d been lying in bed with Carlton, itching to tell him everything that had happened in Hawkins. As much as he wanted to leave that part of him in the past, he still wanted the man he loved to know everything about him, even the ugly parts. But every time Will went to open his mouth he chickened out. Carlton could never understand.
“No. He just thinks I went missing in the woods as a kid,” Will confessed.
“Then he doesn’t know you at all,” Mike scoffed. His audacity was sickening.
“That part of me doesn’t define me.”
“Yeah, but it’s a pretty big fucking deal. If he doesn’t know about that part of you then he doesn’t really know you. Not like I know you.” A red hue faded onto Mike’s cheeks.
"You don’t know me. Not anymore,” Will sighed.
“I know. And I’m sorry. I wanted to call you. You have no idea how many hours I sat with the phone in my hand. But I just... I couldn’t hear you talk about how much fun you were having in New York while I was stuck in Hawkins.” Mike was looking anywhere but Will’s face.
“You weren’t stuck. You could’ve left.”
Mike’s shameless self-pity was starting to grate on Will.
“Is that why you don’t want me to get married? You’re not happy and you want all of us to be just as miserable as you? You want all of us to move back to Hawkins and wallow in our grief for the rest of our lives?”
“No, of course not, I-”
“Then why are you here, Mike? Why are you here on the day before my wedding, telling me not to marry the man I’ve been in love with for three years?”
Mike shut his eyes. His whole body slumped as if he couldn’t hold himself up anymore. Only then did Will notice how utterly exhausted he looked.
“Because... I don’t want you to marry him because...” Mike opened his eyes again and, for the first time since he’d been there, looked Will directly in the eyes. Will swallowed nervously.
“Because I’ve loved you for so much longer than he has.”
Will felt as if all the breath had been snatched from his lungs. Confusion washed over his face. Was this some kind of sick joke? This time Will really did pinch himself.
“That’s not funny,” he mumbled, pouting his lips.
“I’m not kidding,” Mike replied. His tone was flat. His lips were set in a tight line.
Will didn’t know whether or not he wanted Mike to be kidding. On one hand, it would be a cruel prank. A humiliatingly wicked prank. But if he wasn’t kidding...
Will stared deeply into Mike’s eyes, through the thick lenses of his glasses. Mike wasn’t hiding anything anymore. Will felt like he could see his soul through his pitch-black pupils.
“I love you,” Mike repeated after a moment of silence.
And Will knew he was telling the truth.
“Oh my God, this can’t be happening,” Will said, turning away from Mike. He brought one hand to his mouth and used the other to steady himself on the wall behind him. He didn’t know whether he was going to throw up or pass out or die. Or all three.
“It can’t... You’re not...”
“I’m sorry it took me so long to realise,” Mike said, his voice that soft, comforting tone that Will hadn’t realised he missed so much. “I’m sorry it took me so long to... accept it.”
Will could feel Mike move towards him.
Will was trying and failing to stop himself from crying. Tears trickled from his eyes and he sniffled quietly.
“I don’t understand,” he choked out.
“Neither did I for so long. But then I got your wedding invitation and it’s like everything just made sense. Every thought I’ve ever pushed down, every feeling I’ve ever repressed came flooding back up and I couldn’t deny it anymore. I love you, Will.”
Will lifted his eyes to see that Mike’s bottom lip was quivering. His eyes were full of salty tears. But at the same time there was an air of relief about him, as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
“You realised this the day you got your invitation?” Will whispered.
“Yeah,” Mike nodded.
“That was months ago.” Will felt like he was going to get whiplash from the amount of emotions he was running between. Anger rose up in him again and quashed the sadness. He stood upright again and faced Mike head-on. “You had months to do this and you decided to come now? The day before my fucking wedding?”
“I wasn’t going to come at all. But yesterday I realised, if I didn’t at least tell you how I feel, I’d never forgive myself.” A single tear spilled over Mike’s eye and slid slowly down his cheek. “I have spent the last five years of my life coming to terms with how I feel about you, and I can’t sit back and watch you marry someone else when I know you loved me first.”
Will was fully body shaking now. He tried to slow his breathing. He thought of the breathing exercises Carlton had taught him for when he woke up from a nightmare. But this was worse than a nightmare, because this was real, and Will couldn’t escape.
“Where were you when I loved you?” Will panted. “Where were you when I was so pathetically in love with you?”
Will’s mind answered his own question. Mike was with El. His eyes flickered to a stack of books on his bookshelf. Their spine’s yellow, blue and purple. Their author standing just in front of them.
“I-” Mike began to say, but Will interrupted him.
“You don’t love me,” he scoffed, finally understanding why Mike was saying all of this.
“What? Yes, I do,” Mike pleaded. But Will was having none of it.
“No, you don’t.” Will pushed past Mike and grabbed the first book in Mike’s series. The one that displayed the knight and the sorcerer on the cover.
“You never got over El. Every one of your books is about you and her. Falling in love. Not being able to be together. You never got over her and I’m the next best thing.”
Will waved the book around wildly. Mike held his hands up as if he was scared Will might hit him with it.
“No, that’s not-”
“You’ve locked yourself up in Hawkins, letting your grief eat away at you, writing your stupid little books and pretending she’s still here. And now, what? You want me because you can pretend I’m her? Because you finally realised how hopelessly lonely you are and you need someone to shove into the El shaped void in your life?”
“Will, I don’t-”
“I have been second to El my whole life, in everything. And I will not be the person you settle for just because you cannot have her. I won’t... I won’t do it. I won’t- not when I’ve spent my entire life loving you.”
Will knew he messed that last part up. He knew he should’ve said ‘not when I spent so much of my life loving you.’ But he didn’t. Because that wasn’t true. He really had loved Mike his entire life. Even when he told himself he didn’t. He never got over Mike; he just pushed him down into a box and set Carlton on the lid. He’d shoved Carlton into the Mike shaped void. He’d done exactly what he was accusing Mike of doing.
Mike stood silently breathing, staring at Will, with pain plastered on his face.
“That’s not her,” he said, throwing his hand up towards the book in Will’s hand.
“What?” Will snapped.
“That’s not El.” Mike shook his head dejectedly.
Will brought the book down from where he was waving it beside his head. He held it in both of his hands and looked at the cover. The knight and the sorcerer gazed at each other from either side of the cover, their finger’s brushing together just below Mike’s name.
“Yes, it is,” Will said.
“No, it’s not.” Mike walked closer to Will. Will tensed up as Mike reached out and took the book from his hands. Their fingers grazed each other, just like the characters on the cover.
Mike held the book in front of him and smiled down at it. He hovered his fingertips over the sorcerer.
“That’s you,” he said, as if it was obvious.
Will screwed his face up in confusion.
“No, it’s El. Don’t change things now just because you suddenly want me,” he retorted.
“Will, she’s a sorcerer. She wears purple robes with yellow stars. Her powers are innate. She has a mole above her lip that drives the knight crazy. She’s-”
“She’s a girl,” Will interjected.
Mike’s face fell.
“Yeah. Back when I started writing it I didn’t want to believe I had feelings for you. So, I made up a character who was exactly like you, but a girl, and bottled those feelings up.”
Will was still struggling with the fact that Mike had feelings for him at all. It all seemed so out of reach. Five years ago he would’ve been screaming from the rooftops if he thought Mike Wheeler had even a hint of romantic feelings for him. But now here Mike was, telling him he’d been in love with him this whole time, and all Will wanted to do was scream into his pillow.
“This isn’t fair,” he breathed. He glared at Mike like he hated him. Because he did. He hated him and he loved him. He wanted him to leave and he wanted him to stay. He wanted to punch him and he wanted to kiss him.
“I know, I’m an idiot. I hate myself for not realising sooner. But I’m here now. Better late than never, right,” Mike smiled weakly.
Will saw red.
“Do you think you have me now?” he asked, his tone bitter. “Do you think you can confess to me the day before my goddamn wedding and I’ll just run away with you. Do you really think I’m that fucking pathetic?”
Will reached his arm forward and pushed Mike forcefully on the chest. He stumbled back a step.
“No, Will, I-”
“No, you don’t get to talk anymore.”
He grabbed the book from Mike’s hands and tossed it on the floor. It landed face down, hiding the characters on the cover.
“I loved you for years, Mike. Years. And I did nothing because I knew you could never feel the same way about me. I told you I was over you but that was a lie. It took moving out here and separating myself from you to finally be able to breathe. I worked so fucking hard to forget about you.”
Will shoved Mike again, harder this time. He pushed down the sobs in his throat but the tears that stung his eyes couldn’t be suppressed.
“And I did. I forgot about you and I fell in love and now you’ve just waltzed in here like you own me and fucked everything up.”
He pushed him again.
“Did you even think about how I would feel about all this? Did you think about how Carlton would feel if he knew there was some guy at his apartment trying to steal his fiancé the day before his wedding? You’re so fucking selfish, Mike.”
Will hit Mike’s chest with his fist, but this time he didn’t move his hand away. He let his fist sit on Mike’s heart as strained sobs began to erupt from him.
Mike blinked hard, letting more tears stream from his eyes.
“I hate you,” Will cried as he thumped Mike’s chest again. “I hate you. I hate you,” he repeated as he beat Mike’s chest with his fist over and over again, releasing years of pent up resentment.
Mike took every blow. He didn’t move away from Will. He didn’t beg him to stop.
Eventually Will grew weak and his fist slowed. His sobs took over his speech. His head drooped down and, as if he lost all the power in his body, he fell into Mike.
Mike wrapped his arms around Will and embraced him as he wept. Will cried into Mike’s chest until his sweater was soaked through. He cried until his legs were weak and he felt like he couldn’t stand.
After minutes of crying Mike finally spoke.
“I’m sorry,” he sniffed. His chin was resting on top of Will’s head. They fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. “I just needed you to know.”
Will couldn’t speak. He’d gone from experiencing every emotion under the sun to feeling nothing at all. He couldn’t even blink. He just leaned limply against Mike’s bony body.
“I’ll go now. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I shouldn’t have come.”
Will wavered as Mike pulled away from him but he somehow found the strength to keep standing. He watched as Mike headed for the door. He walked through the apartment again, stopping just for a moment to take one final look at Will’s wedding suit.
“You’re gonna be such a handsome groom,” he mumbled, glancing back at Will quickly.
And then he started for the door again. He walked painfully slowly, then reached for the doorknob.
But just as his fingers brushed the cold metal.
“Mike, wait,” Will said without even thinking.
Mike turned around like a whippet, his tearful eyes immediately catching Will’s.
Will forced his legs to start moving, even though he still couldn’t feel them. He rushed over to Mike until his face was just inches from his. He looked up into the eyes of his best friend, his more than crush, his first love.
He knew it was wrong; standing so close, breathing in sync, gazing from eyes to lips back to eyes. But Will allowed himself a moment of weakness after years of holding back.
He stretched up on his tip toes and crashed his lips into Mike’s.
The kiss was gentle at first. Noses apprehensively bumped against each other as lips nervously locked together. Every movement was slow and careful as if they were both holding back. But then Will felt Mike’s hand wrap around his waist, pulling him closer so their bodies were flush together.
The grip Mike’s fingers had on Will’s skin made him forget about everything. It made him forget about how much pain Mike had caused him; how much work he’d put into getting over him; how terribly, awfully wrong this all was.
Will leaned further into Mike. Their bodies rocked together as Mike’s back hit the door. Will lifted both hands and laced his fingers behind Mike’s neck, pulling him down closer to his mouth. Mike’s messy black hair tickled his fingers.
The kiss turned sloppy. It was like all the years of wanting and yearning were trying to explode out of Will all at once. He opened his mouth and breathed a couple of hot breaths onto Mike’s lips. Instantly, Mike’s lips caught his again, but this time tongues collided. Mike lifted the hand that wasn’t on Will’s waist and cupped his jaw, angling his face to the side.
Soon, they reached a steady rhythm, each giving and taking exactly what they needed from each other. The apartment filled with heavy breaths and moans muffled by each other’s kiss. Hands wandered to uncharted places, hovering anxiously over the fabric of their clothes.
Will felt like he couldn’t breathe. This had been his greatest desire; to kiss Mike Wheeler, and have him kiss him back like he meant it. Wherever Mike touched him felt like it was on fire. It was like nothing he’d ever felt before.
But that shouldn’t be.
It shouldn’t have felt so good.
It shouldn’t have felt better than...
Reality set in.
All of a sudden Will ripped himself away from Mike. He stepped far enough away that Mike couldn’t reach him without moving forward. They stared at each other, as Will began to feel choked by guilt.
“Shit,” he whispered, bringing a hand up to touch his lips. His lips which were plump and red from kissing his not-fiancé the day before his wedding.
Mike’s mouth hung open. He didn’t move, not daring to do anymore damage.
“Shit,” Will repeated as he further comprehended what he’d just done. Not only had he cheated on his fiancé, but he’d also undone all the work he’d put into getting over Mike. All the years of praying and willing and pleading his feelings for Mike to go away were a complete waste. Because now, when he looked at Mike, he’d never wanted him more.
There was no sound in the room but their panting breaths as they learned how to breathe again. The silence was brutal but neither one of them knew what to say.
And then, like an ill-timed reality check, the phone rang.
They both jumped at the harsh trill of the phone which hung on the wall in the kitchen. It screamed at him twice before Will even considered answering it.
“You should get that,” Mike mumbled. “It might be about tomorrow.”
But that was precisely why Will didn’t want to get it. No matter who it was it would be someone calling to ask about the wedding. It would be his mom calling to remind him of something he forgot, or Jonathan to say he’d be there soon, or one of his college friends who couldn’t make it to the wedding wishing him good luck.
But Will knew he had to answer it. It would be suspicious if he didn’t. He pulled his eyes away from Mike’s and forced his legs to walk towards the phone.
It chimed twice more before Will mustered up the strength to put his hand on the receiver and once more before he picked it up.
“Hello?” he said weakly.
“Hey, babe,” a familiar voice chirped through the phone.
Will’s heart dropped through the floor into the apartment below. Of all the people to be calling him right now, he was the worst.
“Hey, Carl,” Will replied, attempting to sound less broken than he was.
Will didn’t take his eyes off Mike as he spoke. He watched as something mixed between guilt and fear melted onto his face at the mention of Carlton’s name.
“I’m just calling to say we’re headed to the motel now, so I won’t be able to talk to you until tomorrow. Until you’re standing at the altar with me.”
Will could imagine Carlton’s adorably cheesy smile as he spoke. He could hear the giddy joy in his voice. It made him hate himself.
“Yeah, okay,” Will said stagnantly.
“Will, baby, are you okay?” Carlton’s voice softened but it did nothing to sooth Will.
“Yeah, I just... I’m just a little stressed. There’s a lot going on right now.”
Will glanced at Mike’s lips.
“I know, baby. But just think, tomorrow is going to be the best day of our lives.”
“Mhm,” Will hummed, too scared to talk in case he started sobbing again. Tears were already rolling slowly down his cheeks.
“Cheer up, babe. Everything is under control. I love you.”
Will had never had trouble saying he loved Carlton back. Carlton had said it first, and Will always said it back. But he couldn’t this time.
“Can you come home?” he asked, not attempting to hide the pain in his voice anymore.
“What?”
“Can you come home, please?” Will sniffed.
He noticed Mike’s expression shift again. His eyes burned with a spark of hope. His whole body tensed as if preparing to run.
“Will, I gotta go to the motel. I-”
“Please, Carl. I need you to come home, now.”
"Are you sure everything’s okay?”
Will could hear the simultaneous concern and confusion in Carlton’s voice.
“Just come home,” he repeated.
“Okay, okay. I’ll be there as soon as I can baby. I love you,” he said again, as if he was daring Will to say it back.
But, once again, Will didn’t. He hung the phone back on the hook weakly and let his weeps consume him once more.
Mike cautiously moved away from the door, towards Will. He stood helplessly, watching Will’s life blow up right in front of him.
When Will’s raw sobs quieted to breathy sniffles Mike finally spoke.
“What are you going to say to him?” he asked carefully.
Will looked up from his hands. His eyes were so full of despair he could barely see Mike standing right in front of him.
“I don’t know,” he said defeatedly, shaking his head.
Will could see the questions swimming around Mike’s head. He could see him trying to figure out how to say what he wanted to say next. And then he came out with it.
“Are you going to marry him?” he asked bluntly.
Will had two options:
Marry Carlton tomorrow and live a happy life; an easy life. Live the normal life he’d craved since he was twelve and all manner of normalcy was stripped away from him. He loved Carlton, he really did. He loved that he’d helped him to become a more confident person. He loved that he supported him with his artwork. He loved that he finally felt comfortable to be himself around someone.
Carlton loved Will and Will loved Carlton and that should be enough. Will would be stupid to end things now, when everything was so perfect.
But then there was Mike. Mike was the person who made him realise who he was. Mike was the person who he’d spent years loving. Mike was the person he thought he could never have. He was messy and toxic and difficult.
But Mike was also his best friend. Mike was the one who was there for him when no one else was. Mike was the one who spent nights at the hospital, nights at his house, shivering under layers of blankets because Will liked it cold. Mike was there for the ugly parts. The parts Carlton couldn’t even begin to understand. Mike was there when Will was at his lowest. Without Mike, Will didn’t even know if he’d be alive.
Will thought that Mike was a fantasy, like one of his books. A story he could make up in his head and wish for when he was fourteen, knowing it would never come true. But the wish had come true, five years too late.
Choosing Mike would uproot everything Will had built for himself. But when had he ever chosen the easy option?
“No,” he whispered, staring deeply into Mike’s eyes as he chose him.
Mike sighed in relief. His body relaxed and he had to steady himself against the kitchen counter.
“You can’t be here when he gets here,” Will said. If Carlton left right away Will had thirty minutes until confrontation.
Mike nodded in understanding. He pushed himself away from the counter and came closer to Will again. He reached his hand towards Will’s, which was hanging limply by his side, and gently brushed their fingers together.
“Okay,” he said, looking into Will’s eyes as if he was the most special thing in the world. It made Will want to cry again.
“Call me when you sort everything out.”
Mike leaned down and placed a soft kiss in Will’s hair. He hovered there for a moment and inhaled the scent of Will’s vanilla shampoo.
“I promise this time I’ll pick up the phone.”
Then he pulled away from Will and walked towards the door. He took one last glance at Will over his shoulder before he opened the door and disappeared.
Will let out a shaky breath. The next few days would be filled with sleepless nights, brutal arguments and broken hearts. But at least, at the end of it all, Will had someone who would pick up the phone, and pick up the pieces.

Billy grunted loudly, screwing up his face as he pumped in and out of you. You moaned half-heartedly, not quite as satisfied as you should’ve been after having sex with your boyfriend. But this was how it had always been. You wondered how Billy had gotten the reputation he had because sex with him was... just fine. It felt great but he’d never managed to get you to the high that you craved.
Billy slumped off you, sighing as he lay down beside you and flung the used condom in the direction of his trash can. He didn’t look at you after sex. He never did. He just lay there, staring at the ceiling with an angry expression on his face. You’d have broken up with him by now if you weren’t so annoyingly obsessed with him.
But this time Billy looked even more angry than usual. He furrowed his eyebrows and frustratedly reached for a cigarette. His lighter took a few clicks before it lit and then he held it to the end of the cigarette. Soon he was puffing clouds of grey smoke into the room but not even the addicting buzz of nicotine lifted him.
You’d started to think that maybe you were the problem. That you were actually so much worse at sex than you thought you were. That you didn’t do anything for him, so he didn’t want to put that much effort in. You suddenly felt horrifyingly insecure.
“Billy?” you said, almost scared to even say anything. “Are you okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be okay?” he replied sharply.
“You just... You don’t seem like you enjoyed that very much. You haven’t looked like you’ve enjoyed having sex with me, well, ever.”
“Of course I enjoyed it. It’s sex,” Billy said bluntly, averting his eyes from you to take another drag of his cigarette.
“Okay,” you said, defeated. You copied Billy and stared at the ceiling. But you couldn’t let it go.
“Are you not turned on by me or something?” you asked after a few minutes had passed.
“What?” Billy said, his face turning from angry to confused.
“Well, that would explain why you always look so annoyed after we have sex,” you explained.
“Jesus, will you just let this go,” Billy said, raising his voice. “You know what, just leave if you’re going to keep going on about this.”
“No,” you said, sitting up in the bed. Billy did the same and shimmied up so his back was against the headboard. “I’m not leaving until you tell me why you don’t like having sex with me.”
“I do like having sex with you,” Billy shouted.
“Obviously not,” you retorted.
“Yes, I do,” Billy yelled, finally meeting your eyes. There was something in the way his eyebrows were downturned, and his eyes were wide open that made you see how hurt he was. He reached out his hand to yours and laced your fingers together.
“I enjoy having sex with you so much and that’s what’s so frustrating.”
“What do you mean?” you asked, staring back at Billy desperately. He was never much of an emotional person, so seeing him with this much pain behind his eyes concerned you.
Billy sighed and threw his head back against the headboard. He reached out and put the cigarette out on the ashtray beside his bed. He let go of your hand so he could fidget nervously with his fingers. He looked so vulnerable, so different from the tough exterior he usually presented.
“I like having sex with you. You’re so fucking hot, how could I not? It’s just... I can’t...” Billy stuttered. You could see his chest begin to rise and fall rapidly as he took shallow breaths.
“What is it?” you encouraged him, running your hand up and down his arm.
Billy shut his eyes. “I can’t...” He gulped nervously. “Finish.”
Billy’s face immediately began to beam bright red. He opened his eyes but he couldn’t look at you.
“What?” you said, not entirely sure you understood how that could be possible.
“I can’t cum, okay?” Billy yelled, anger rising up in him again. “I can’t get off.”
“But we... You... You just did,” you said.
“No, I didn’t. I faked it. I’ve been faking it the whole time.”
None of this made any sense. What did Billy mean he couldn’t cum? Why? You had so many questions, but you didn’t want to ask them all at once. Billy had already shown you so much more emotion than usual, and you didn’t want to push it.
“Oh,” was all you said.
“And it’s not because of you. You’re just about the only good thing I have in my life right now.”
“Well then, why is this happening to you?” you asked apprehensively.
“I don’t fucking know. Don’t you think if I knew why this was happening I would’ve fixed it by now?” Bill said defensively.
“Sorry,” you replied quietly. You slumped your back against the headboard and stared straight forward at the AC/DC poster on Billy’s wall.
“Is that why you never let me... touch you?” you whispered. Billy had this thing. He’d made it very clear from the start of your relationship that he didn’t want your hands on his dick. He didn’t want you to jerk him off. It confused you, disappointed you a little, but you understood that people had preferences.
“Yeah,” he said, defeated. “I didn’t want you to see that I wasn’t... That I couldn’t...”
You could tell Billy was embarrassed. And you felt like shit for asking him what was wrong in the first place. But curiosity was winning you over.
“So, how long has it been since you... you know?” you asked hesitantly.
“I don’t know. Maybe like a month?”
“A month?” Your jaw dropped. “Billy, that’s not healthy.”
“I can’t help it. I try. Jesus, I try so fucking hard and nothing happens,” Billy said desperately. “I get so close and then I start hearing my dad’s voice in my head, telling me how I need to be more of a man and... and then I just can’t.”
Now you were getting somewhere. You always knew Billy had issues with his dad, but you didn’t realise they affected him this deeply.
“And then the more I think about my dad, the more I miss my mom, and that just makes everything worse,” Billy continued.
This time it was you who reached for Billy’s hands. You cupped both his hands in yours and turned your head to place a kiss on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry, I had no idea how bad it was,” you said softly.
“It’s fine. I don’t really like to talk about it much.”
“But you should talk about it. Maybe that’s why you can’t get off. Everything is pent up inside you. You need to talk to me Billy.”
Billy shook his head frantically. “No, I can’t.”
"Please,” you urged him. “You need to get this shit off your chest.”
Billy shook his head. His jaw tightened. You responded by planting a kiss along it.
“Billy,” you pleaded one last time. And the tone of your voice convinced him.
“What do you want to know?” he said blankly.
“Everything. Tell me about your dad, you mom, moving here. Anything that plays on your mind.”
You could practically hear the cogs in Billy’s head grinding. He swallowed nervously, shifting towards you slightly. He forced his eyes to meet yours.
“Um... can I tell you about my dad?”
You nodded tentatively.
“Okay, so, um... you know he’s a complete asshole,” Billy began.
You nodded again, trying your best to encourage Billy.
“He was like that back in California too. Maybe worse. Because he took it out on my mom.” At the mention of Billy’s mom you noticed his eyes glass over with tears.
“He hits me now, but I’d take a million beatings over seeing her get hurt by him again. She was... She didn’t deserve that.”
“Neither do you,” you chimed in.
Billy acted as though he didn’t hear you and continued.
“Anyway, he’s always been a jerk. When my mom left, and it was just me and him, those were the worst years of my life. Those years are why I’m so goddamn fucked up.”
Billy was retreating back into himself again. You could see from the way his eyes went all distant.
“None of that is your fault,” you reassured him. You cupped his face with both your palms and gently rubbed your thumbs against his cheeks. “You can’t blame yourself for what your dad taught you.”
You leaned forward and touched Billy’s lips with yours, ever so lightly. You never kissed him that way before. Kisses with Billy were usually rough and lustful and a precursor to sex.
“Tell me about your mom,” you whispered.
Billy’s face softened to a blissful expression before souring into sadness.
“She was everything to me,” Billy breathed. “She was always so happy around me. Even with bruises on her body. She always smiled when she looked at me.”
Billy smiled, a mournful but genuinely happy smile. You couldn’t recall ever seeing that expression on him before.
“She wanted me to be a surfer...”
As Billy spoke you let your hand fall from his cheek. You snaked it down his chest, below the sheets, until your fingers brushed against the base of his dick.
“What are you doing?” Billy grabbed your arm tightly, a look of alarm plastered on his face.
“Just keep talking. Let it all out,” you said calmly. “Tell me more about surfing.”
Only when you felt Billy’s grip on your arm loosen did you continue your quest.
“Yeah, my mom, she used to take me to the beach every weekend.”
You wrapped your fingers around the base of Billy’s dick and watched his eyebrows sink, just for a second.
“She got me surfing lessons.”
You began stroking up and down, slow, long caresses that instantly made him begin to stiffen under your grasp.
“I got really good. She encouraged me to keep going. She got me into competitions and said I could go professional when I was older.”
Billy had his eyes shut now. His head was resting on the headboard; one hand at his side, the other still on your arm.
“She always believed in me.”
You quickened your pace, feeling that Billy was now fully hard from your touch. But that was never the problem. He was always able to get hard. It was the next part that seemed to prove more difficult.
“She, uh, she took extra shifts at work to be able to pay for m-my training.”
Billy was beginning to stutter, distracted by how good your hand felt wrapped around him. You changed your pace from quick, to slow, back to quick again, attempting to tease a response out of him.
“The day I won my first competition she t-took me to our favourite diner after.”
Billy was properly smiling now. His eyes were still shut but you didn’t need to see his eyes to know how happy he was.
“We got pancakes a-and milksh-shakes.”
Billy twitched in your hand. He was so close. Just a few more strokes and he’d be there.
“Dad never came to see me, but I was glad that he didn’t.”
Billy’s voice dropped. His tone shifted and the smile on his face melted away into a scowl.
“He never liked that I did surfing. He said it wasn’t manly enough. He says that about everything that I do. Calls me a fag any chance he gets. Says I’ll never be a man like him.”
And just like that Billy was back at square one. Anything you’d worked up in him over the last few minutes was gone now. His whole body tensed up again.
“Fuck, this is so stupid,” he spat. He pushed your arm away and turned his head away from you.
“Billy, you were so close,” you said, disappointed that he’d allowed his thoughts to take over once more.
“Yeah, I’m so close every fucking time I try this. But it never happens. I’m fucking broken,” Billy yelled, pulling the sheets up over his chest.
“No, Billy, you’re not broken. You let your dad get in your head again. That’s the problem.”
“You told me to talk about him,” Billy accused.
“Okay, yeah, maybe that’s a fault on my part. But look how close you got when you were talking about your mom, about surfing. You got so relaxed and you were nearly there.”
Billy let out an exasperated sigh. “This is useless.”
“No, it’s not. We just need to try something different. We need to get you even more relaxed.” You thought for a minute and then told him, “Lie down.”
“What?”
“Do you trust me?”
Billy nodded.
“Then lie down.”
Billy obeyed, shimmying down on the bed until his head was on the pillow. Then you pulled back the covers. The unexpectedness of it sent a shiver up Billy’s spine. He looked up at you, mouth slightly open, eyes sorrowful.
You turned yourself around and climbed on top of him, straddling his stomach. This was new. You’d never been on top of him before. He always pushed you down beneath him. Now you realised it was probably a macho thing; another way to prove to his dad that was he was man enough.
But the Billy that was beneath you didn’t seem concerned about how manly he looked. The Billy that was beneath you expelled a shuddery breath at the feel of your wet pussy resting on his lower stomach. The Billy that was beneath you had never looked more beautiful.
“Relax. Don’t think about your dad. Don’t think about anything. Just focus on me, okay?” you told him. Talking hadn’t worked so maybe the opposite would.
Billy blinked his long lashes, his eyes shifting from your face to your tits to your crotch, back up to your face. He nodded, nervously biting his lip.
You leaned down and crashed your lips into his. Billy immediately planted his hands on your hips and gripped your ass, pulling you closer to him. You had one hand on the pillow beside his head, holding you up, and the other took refuge in Billy’s hair. You tangled tresses of shoulder length brown hair between your fingers, pulling lightly at the nape of his neck.
Billy moaned into your mouth, and you took that as your opportunity to slip your tongue in. The kiss became sloppy and desperate. You rolled your hips, grinding your pussy against Billy’s stomach as his fingernails made halfmoons on your skin.
You could feel his dick behind you, resting against your ass. He was still hard. Still painfully, frustratingly pent up. But you hoped this might finally make him let go.
You pulled your head back, your lips making a wet, popping sound as they parted from Billy’s.
“Remember, no thinking. Just relax,” you said gently. The hand that was in his hair dropped down to caress his face.
“Relax,” Billy confirmed, although he had an anxious look on his face.
You lifted your hips and Billy guided you back until you hovered above his dick. You looked deep into his eyes. His chest was already rising and falling deeply in anticipation. His eyes were wide like a puppy dog.
“Relax,” you said one more time before slowly sliding down onto his dick.
You let out a long, relieving breath as Billy’s dick effortlessly slipped inside you. Billy hummed quietly at the feel of you.
“It’s so hot seeing you beneath me like this,” you said breathily, moving your hips back and forth.
Billy grunted, his lips pursed shut. His hands glided from your hips to your waist, and then higher. They hovered just below your chest.
“You wanna touch my tits?” you asked.
Billy nodded eagerly. You put both your hands on top of his and moved them up, so he was cupping your tits. He squeezed gently, his hips bucking up when his thumb brushed against your nipple.
“Fuck,” he mumbled, barely opening his mouth.
You could see he still wasn’t fully losing himself. He was holding back, like he didn’t want to fully let go. And that simply wouldn’t do.
“Do you think I’m hot, Billy?” you asked, a seductive quality to your voice.
Billy nodded once again.
“Then why don’t you moan like you mean it?”
Billy looked at you with a confused expression, still grunting with every thrust of your hips.
“Open your mouth. I wanna hear you,” you said, dropping a hand to his chin. You used your thumb to pry his mouth open.
Instantly, breathier, louder moans fell from his mouth.
“Good boy,” you smirked.
The praise encouraged him even more. His moans rose in pitch, turning into desperate whines.
“Good boy, good boy,” you repeated as your thrusts turned into bounces.
Then something other than a whine escaped from Billy’s lips. Something you hadn’t been expecting.
“Mommy,” he whimpered, eyes closed tight.
But as soon as it slipped from his lips his eyes shot open. You both stilled, both taken aback by his exclamation. His hands dropped from your tits and his whole body seized up.
“I’m sorry,” Billy whispered. His face was redder than you’d ever seen it.
“No, don’t be,” you said, not wanting to discourage him when he was so close. And now, after hearing him call you that, you were close too. “Keep saying it. If it gets you closer keep saying it.”
As you slowly built up your pace again you felt Billy’s muscles relax again. But you needed to get him back into that blissful mind space.
“Such a pretty boy doing so well for me,” you said, stroking his hair. He leaned his face towards your hand, breathing ruggedly. “Touch me again.”
Billy’s hands apprehensively slid up your body and he circled your nipples with his fingertips. You moaned as goosebumps formed on your skin.
“Such a good boy making mommy feel so good,” you praised him.
Hearing you refer to yourself as mommy set him off even more. His jaw slackened and he might as well have been drooling.
The sensation of his hands on your tits drove you to ride him harder.
“M-mommy,” Billy whimpered, completely succumbing to you. “Mommy.”
“That’s it, baby. Relax,” you smiled, planting your hands on his shoulders to steady yourself. Your thighs had started to burn and you were losing your breath but there was no way you were giving up now.
“Oh, fuck, mommy,” Billy whined again, the pitch of his whimpered getting higher every time. “I need you, mommy.”
Billy looked glorious. His eyes were glazed over as he looked up at you through tear-soaked lashes. His hair was clinging to his forehead and neck. His mouth was wide open, crying delicious whimpers that filled the room.
“Billy, I want you to cum for me, okay?”
Billy’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed nervously.
“Cum for mommy. Can you do that for me?” you asked, digging your nails into his shoulders as you came closer and closer to release.
“I’d do anything for you, mommy,” Billy breathed.
You leaned down and kissed him quickly. Then you moved your mouth towards his ear.
“Let it go, Billy,” you whispered.
You sat up again and rode Billy as hard and as fast as your legs would allow. You felt your pussy tighten around Billy’s dick and knew you were about to crack. You prayed Billy would do the same.
“Fuck, Billy, come on,” you moaned through gritted teeth, forcing yourself to hold off until Billy let himself go.
Then Billy moved his hands from your tits to your shoulders and pulled you down so you were nearly flush against his chest. The new angle wasn’t good for you and you knew you were done for any second.
“Do you love me, mommy?” Billy whispered.
Your eyes went wide. You’d only been dating Billy for just over a month. Saying that felt way too soon. And yet, you knew, if this is how Billy acted behind closed doors, then yes, you absolutely did love him.
“Yes. I love you, Billy. I love you, baby.”
And that was all it took. A look of pure euphoria spread across Billy’s face as he finally let go. You gasped as cum forcefully shot out inside you. It came in waves at first; quick spurts as if he still wouldn’t allow himself to fully let go. But all it took was a little bit more praise and suddenly he was squirting like a hose.
“Yes, Billy, good boy. That feels so good,” you breathed between moans as you also began to come undone.
Billy’s eyes rolled back in his head and he looked like he was about to pass out from the sheer volume of cum that was flowing out of him. Tears of complete and utter relief streamed from his eyes as moans of jubilant pleasure burst from him.
“Uh, mommy. Thank you, mommy. Thank you,” he babbled, as the stream of cum finally began to stop.
You felt like you were going to explode. You were still bent over Billy but you sat back up, using his shoulders to push yourself up. When you were sat upright you looked down and saw the mess you’d made. Billy’s cum was seeping out of you, pooling in the hollow of his stomach. It was filthy. And yet so very hot.
“Jesus,” you said, looking between Billy’s face and his lower stomach. “Guess that worked a little too well.”
Billy couldn’t speak. He was in a world of his own, completely spent. He’d just released a month’s worth of pent up frustration and it had turned him into a mute, gaping-mouthed mess. His chest heaved raggedly and he looked as if he was trying to say something.
“Shh. I’ll get you cleaned up,” you said quietly.
You lifted your hips up and let Billy’s dick fall out of you. But it wasn’t just his dick. Somehow even more cum gushed out of you, as if Billy’s dick had been trapping it like a plug.
“Fuck,” you swore, sighing at the feeling of it all falling out.
Billy was even more of a mess now. And so were his sheets.
You got up and scampered to the bathroom. By the time you got there cum had dripped down the insides of your legs. You grabbed a towel, dampened it and cleaned yourself up. Then you grabbed another towel for Billy.
When you got back to the bedroom Billy was sitting up, staring at the white puddle on his stomach.
“Here,” you said, sitting down beside him. You wiped the cum from his stomach as best you could and he never took his eyes off you. When you were finished you tossed the towel on the floor and turned to face him. The look in his eyes was something between disbelief and utter adoration.
“You don’t have to take care of me,” he said, his speech finally coming back to him.
“But I want to,” you replied matter-of-factly.
“Why?”
“Because you deserve to be taken care of. You don’t need to be so independent, so... what your dad would call ‘manly’. You deserve to let go and be vulnerable.”
Billy blushed again.
“I’m sorry that was so embarrassing. I’ve never done anything like that before, I swear,” he said shamefully.
“Billy, that was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen,” you smiled.
Billy paused, dumbfounded. “Seriously?” He frowned as if he couldn’t possibly understand how you’d just found what he’d done any way attractive.
“Yes. And don’t you feel so much better?” You rubbed his thigh comfortingly.
“Holy shit, yes,” he sighed. “Sorry there was so much.”
“Stop apologising.” You shook your head, smiling sympathetically. “If that’s what you need to do every time you want to get off then I will gladly do it again and again.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
You leaned forward and kissed him softly again. He wrapped his arms around you and before you knew it he had pulled you down so you were lying beside each other. The tender, intimate embrace you held each other in was nothing like the animalistic grapple you usually found yourselves in. Billy allowed himself to be kissed and held and taken care of.
When you pulled away from the kiss Billy was smiling with his teeth. For the first time since his he’d last seen his mom, he actually felt loved. He felt like he didn’t have to put on an act. He felt like he loved you too.

Hopper’s cabin was buzzing with the din of music and the conversation of tipsy teenagers. It was Will’s going away party. He was leaving for New York the next day and Jonathan had surprised him with a big get together. Everyone was there; Jonathan, Joyce, Hopper, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Robin, Nancy, Steve, and even some new friends he’d made during his last year of high school. And, of course, Mike. Hopper had allowed them to drink a little bit of alcohol (although they’d all snuck way more than the one cup he’d permitted), and by the time everyone began to leave Will was pretty wasted and doing an awful job hiding it.
“Will, how much have you had to drink?” Jonathan asked, pulling Will’s cup out of his hand.
“Chill, Jonathan, I’m fine,” Will slurred in reply.
“Seriously, Will. Mom’s starting to notice.”
“He hasn’t had that much,” Max said, coming up behind Will. “I’ve been watching him. I think he’s just a lightweight.”
“I am not!” Will pouted, but he immediately stumbled over his own feet. He overbalanced and fell to the side, right into Mike.
“Woah, be careful,” Mike said, irritated, until he saw who it was that had fallen into him. “Oh, Will, you okay?” His voice immediately softened.
“Yes, I’m okay. Jonathan thinks I can’t handle my alcohol, but he’s wrong.”
“Yeah, you seem completely sober,” Mike said half-heartedly.
In truth, Mike had been drinking a lot more than his fair share too. But he was drinking to forget. The only trouble was, he wasn’t forgetting; he was only getting sadder. The thought of Will leaving for New York had been eating away at him ever since Will had shown him his college acceptance letter. And now that Will’s departure was a mere day away, Mike was minutes away from a full-blown breakdown.
“Hey guys, my mom’s here. I gotta go,” Dustin said sadly, walking over to the group. “I’m going to miss you so much, Will.”
Will smiled, his eyes welling with tears. “Oh, Dustin, come here,” he said, pulling Dustin into a hug.
Not long after Dustin left, Lucas’s dad arrived to collect Lucas and Max. They said their emotional goodbyes and wished each other good luck for college. They were all leaving within the next week.
Well, all except Mike; the last one left at the party. Mike was taking a gap year to figure out what he wanted to do. That’s what he told people anyway. Really, he wasn’t sure he wanted to do anything at all. He felt stuck, like he had no path forward. Ever since everything went down with the Upside Down he’d not been able to see a future for himself. Everyone else was getting out of Hawkins and doing what they’d always dreamed of doing but Mike didn’t have any dreams. Not any he felt it could pursue anyway.
“You okay, kid?”
Mike jumped as Hopper placed a hand on his shoulder. He hadn’t realised he’d been sitting in a daze for the last few minutes with a woeful frown on his face.
“What? Uh, yeah. I’m fine,” Mike replied, barely able to conjure up his voice. “Maybe just had too much to drink.”
“Yeah, I really should’ve made this an alcohol-free party,” Hopper lamented, pointing towards Will who was twirling around the room as upbeat music played from the stereo.
Mike stared longingly at Will. He was so carefree. Ever since they’d taken down the Mind Flayer he’d been a different person, a happier person. Ever since he’d come out he’d been so much more free.
Mike was the opposite. Ever since the Upside Down was destroyed, and El with it, he’d shut down. Sure, he still had fun with his friends. He enjoyed his last year of school and hosted as many D&D campaigns as he possibly could. But he still felt like there was something weighing down on him, not allowing him to be as happy as everyone else was.
“Mike, dance with me,” Will laughed, skipping over to him.
“No, I’m good,” Mike shrugged.
“Come on, I’m leaving tomorrow. You have to,” Will begged, holding out his hands in front of Mike.
Mike sighed and looked around the room. Hopper and Joyce were sitting in the corner talking and Jonathan had gone to his room.
“Okay, fine,” Mike said, feeling an electric shock shoot up his body as he placed his hands in Will’s. Will pulled him up from the couch and was already jumping up and down. But then the song changed from the fast beat of Boney M. to the more soulful tones of ‘Unchained Melody’.
Will, following the beat of the music, stopped jumping and instead wrapped his arms around Mike’s neck and began rocking back and forth. Mike stood rigid, his hands by his sides. Alcohol obviously had very opposite effects on the two boys.
“Mike, you're not dancing,” Will whined. He removed his arms from around Mike’s neck for just a second to grab Mike’s hands and place them on his waist. “I thought you already knew how to slow dance.”
“I do, I-” Mike couldn’t think of what to say. He was too focussed on the feeling of his hands resting on Will’s hips.
“Relax, Mike. Dance.”
Mike exhaled deeply and willed his body to shift from side to side. As soon as he started moving Will pulled him closer and rested his head on his chest. It took all of Mike’s strength not to place his chin on Will’s head. He gulped and looked back over at Hopper and Joyce. They were still engrossed in conversation.
Mike shut his eyes and focussed on the feeling of Will’s body against his. He listened to Will’s breathing and began to breath in time with him. Eventually his body relaxed.
“I’m going to miss you the most,” Will murmured drunkenly, nuzzling his head against Mike’s chest.
Mike bit his lip to stop himself from crying.
They danced until the song finished and then, as if on cue, there was a knock at the door. Mike instantly pulled away from Will. Joyce rose from her chair to get it. She opened the door to find Karen, there to pick up Mike.
Mike felt like he was going to be sick. This was it. He wasn’t going to see Will again before he left. And with Hopper and Joyce moving to Montauk, Will had no reason to ever return to Hawkins.
Mike could hear Joyce and Karen talking by the door, but he couldn’t shift his eyes away from Will.
Will stared back at Mike with tears in his eyes. The alcohol had helped him cope with the fact that he was leaving, but now it was all too real. Once Mike walked out the door he wasn’t sure when he’d ever see him again. Mike had no reason to visit him in New York. He suddenly didn’t feel so giddy anymore.
“You ready Mike?” Karen called from the door.
“Um, yeah,” Mike muttered, trying to force himself away from Will. But Will caught him in a hug before he could move.
“Please don’t ever stop being my best friend,” Will whispered, his breath tickling Mike’s ear.
“I could never,” Mike replied. He held Will tighter than he ever had. He didn’t want to let go. He didn’t want to watch as Will left to live his life and he was stuck in Hawkins with no clue what to do. He just wanted things to go back to the way they were.
“Come home with me,” he said suddenly, still holding Will close to him.
“What?”
“Let’s have one last sleepover in my basement.”
Will's mouth spread into a grin. He couldn’t think of anything better than spending his last night in Hawkins in one of the only places he felt safe.
“Okay, yeah. Let me ask mom.”
Will pried himself away from Mike’s grasp and went over to talk to Joyce. Meanwhile, Mike spoke to Karen about it.
“Mom, can Will come over so we can have a sleepover in the basement?”
“As long as Joyce is okay with it,” Karen shrugged.
“As much as I’d love for you to spend your last night in Hawkins with us, yes, go have fun,” Joyce said.
Mike and Will beamed at each other before walking out the door and getting into Karen’s car.
When they got to the Wheeler’s house Will was still stumbling. Mike grabbed two glasses from the kitchen cupboard and filled them with water.
“Thanks,” Will said, taking one of the glasses from Mike’s hand. “I promise I didn’t mean to drink that much.”
“You didn’t drink that much. You just can’t handle it,” Mike laughed.
“Hey.” Will pushed Mike playfully.
“Quiet boys, Holly’s sleeping,” Karen whispered from the stairs.
“Sorry Mrs Wheeler.”
“Sorry Mom.”
Mike and Will quietly made their way down to the basement. Will instantly threw himself on the mattress on the floor. Mike sat on the couch.
Mike sipped his water awkwardly, not sure what to say anymore. Will stared at the ceiling. His head was still spinning, but not quite as much as before.
“Tell me something I don’t know,” he said after minutes of silence.
“What?”
“Tell me something about you that I don’t know.”
“Will, you’re my best friend. You know everything about me,” Mike lied.
“Come on, Mike. There has to be something.”
“There’s not.”
“Okay, I’ll go first then,” Will said, screwing up his face to think. “Um, let me see. Oh, okay, when I was maybe nine or ten I stole a packet of Sour Patch Kids from Bradley’s Big Buy.”
“You, Will Byers, the most moral person I know, stole from the store when you were a kid?” Mike scoffed, unconvinced.
“I did. I swear,” Will pleaded.
“Did you eat the candy?”
“No, I took it back the next day because I felt bad,” Will confessed.
“Of course you did,” Mike smiled.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re just way too good of a person to do something like that. Even as a kid. You’ve always been the best of us. That’s one of my favourite things about you.”
Will could feel himself beginning to blush.
“Okay, you go now. There has to be something that you haven’t told me. Something small,” he said quickly.
“Let me think,” Mike sighed. He scoured around in his brain for something innocent that he could tell Will. Something that wouldn’t reveal too much. “Uh, remember when Jonathan was addicted to weed?”
“Of course.”
“Well, one time, when you guys were staying here, I was down here and I found some of his weed. And I took it.”
“Did you smoke it?” Will asked.
“I wanted to, but didn’t know how to roll it,” Mike said.
“Oh God,” Will laughed. “So, what did you do with it?”
“I flushed it.”
“Why are we both so useless at being bad?” Will giggled.
Mike smiled down at Will as he watched him laughing. He couldn’t quite comprehend that this was the last time they’d be hanging out in his basement. He had to get that thought out of his head.
“Okay, your turn,” he said.
“Hmm, what have I never told you?” Will thought aloud. “There is one thing, but I don’t know if I can say it.”
“Oh, well now you have to tell me,” Mike said, intrigued.
“It’s not really my secret to tell. I mean, it is my secret, but it involves someone else.”
“I won’t tell.”
“Promise?”
“When have I ever broken your trust?”
Will smiled and then took a deep breath. “Okay. But you cannot tell anyone.”
“I won’t. I promise.” Mike was practically on the edge of his seat.
“You know how you guys all think I’ve never kissed anyone?” Will began.
“Yeah, because you haven’t,” Mike shook his head.
“No, that’s the thing. I have.”
Will was still lying nonchalantly on the mattress; eyes trained on the ceiling so he couldn’t see Mike completely malfunction.
“What? You’re kidding, right?”
“Is it really so hard to believe that someone would want to kiss me?” Will said, annoyed.
“No!” Mike replied a little too enthusiastically. “No, that’s not what I meant. I’m sorry. It’s just... When? And who?”
“See, I don’t really know if I should say. He’s not out yet so I don’t want to expose him,” Will explained.
“Will, I’m not going to tell anyone. I would never out someone. I just want to make sure my best friend is choosing the right people to kiss.”
“Oh you do, do you?” Will chuckled, rolling over so he was now on his stomach, his head resting on his hands as he gazed up at Mike.
“Yeah, I want to make sure you’re not making any stupid decisions.”
“Well, I don’t think you’re going to like who it is then,” Will mumbled, biting his lip.
Mike’s face fell. “Will? Who is it?”
“Chance,” Will barely whispered.
“What?!” Mike shrieked so loud he probably woke up the entire Wheeler house.
“Shh, Mike.”
“Chance?! As in Chance who used to bully us, Chance?”
“Yes, but Mike, he was never that bad. He just followed along with whatever Andy wanted to do. He just wanted to fit in,” Will defended. “He’s actually a really nice guy.”
Mike could feel a newfound rage rising within him. Something he’d only ever felt when he watched guys talking to Will. Deep and overpowering jealousy.
“When exactly did this kiss happen?” Mike asked, his tone sharp.
“At Stacey’s party. Well, that was the first time,” Will shrugged.
“The first time?! There were other times?!” Mike almost sprung out of his seat.
“That time at the party was the first time he’d ever kissed a guy. After it happened, he wanted to talk to me about, you know, liking guys. We met up a couple of times and things just happened.”
Mike stared at Will with his mouth agape. This was his Will. The Will he thought would only ever be his. Even though he’d never asked him to be.
Will didn’t feel bad about telling Mike about his relationship with Chance. Mike, Lucas and Dustin had all had girlfriends, so why shouldn’t he be allowed a little action too?”
“He mostly just wanted to understand more about who he is. But we found comfort in each other,” Will added.
“So, what, did you guys date?”
“Only for about a month. But I ended it. I, uh-,” Will was suddenly flustered. “I didn’t feel for him the same way I’ve felt about other people in the past.”
Mike completely missed who Will was really hinting at and instead assumed there had been another guy Will had a crush on.
“I hate this game,” he huffed.
“Oh, come on, Mike. What, are you jealous or something?” Will joked.
“Yeah, I’m so jealous you got to kiss your bully,” Mike replied sarcastically.
“I wish I hadn’t brought this up,” Will sighed.
“So do I.”
Mike slumped down into the plush cushion of the couch, his arms crossed. Will rolled onto his back again and went back to staring at the ceiling.
Mike felt anger swell in him again. But it wasn’t towards Will or Chance, it was towards himself. He knew he should be happy that Will had got to experience what every teenager wanted to experience. But he couldn’t help but be consumed by rage at the thought of someone else’s hands on Will. Someone else’s lips on his. It made him feel awful that he couldn’t even be happy for his best friend.
“I’m sorry,” Mike murmured after a few minutes of silence.
“It’s okay,” Will replied bluntly.
“Did you like it?” Mike asked quietly.
“Like what?”
“Kissing him.”
Will really wished they could stop having this conversation. Yes, he’d had a very brief and fleeting relationship with Chance, but it didn’t really mean anything. It was nice to finally be able to do things that normal people did in a relationship. Chance had given him his first kiss, his first date (even if that date was taking him on a drive to where no one would see them and making out in his car), and he’d really boosted his self-esteem. But no matter how hard Will tried, he just wasn’t as into the relationship as Chance was, and he knew exactly the reason why.
“Yeah, it was nice kissing him. But, Mike, can we please stop talking about this now. We broke up. It’s over.”
“Okay, sorry,” Mike apologised again. He didn’t want to keep talking about it either but something within him burned to know every little detail about what Will had got up to with Chance. But this was their last night together and he didn’t want to spoil it, so instead, he searched his memories for more secrets. “You want to know something else I’ve never told you.”
Will smiled, happy the subject was changing. “Yes, please.”
For the next thirty minutes they exchanged innocent secrets, more things from their childhood that they’d somehow never told each other. Embarrassing stories and funny memories that made them wheeze with laughter. It was all fun and games until a certain memory popped up in Mike’s mind.
“When you were away in California I used to bike to your house and just sit on the porch because I missed you,” Mike confessed shyly.
Will let out a shaky breath. “When I was in California I used to draw all of you guys so I wouldn’t forget your faces.” Will failed to mention that while he’d drawn Dustin, Lucas and Max a couple of times, he had a whole notebook filled with sketches of Mike. “I really missed you when I moved away.”
“I really missed you. I’m sorry I didn’t say it at the time,” Mike replied, his mind suddenly unlocking another memory that he’d tried to suppress. He wasn't sure if he wanted to reveal this one. He knew it would hurt Will. But whether it was the alcohol loosening his tongue, or the fact that Will was leaving in the morning, Mike couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
“I have something else to tell you, but please don’t freak out.”
“Um, okay,” Will said apprehensively.
“When you were missing I jumped off the quarry,” Mike blurted out.
“Wait, what?” Will said, feeling like Mike had skipped all the details, because he had.
“Dustin and I were looking for El and then Troy and James found us and chased us to the quarry. Troy pulled a knife on Dustin and said I had to jump or he’d kill Dustin.”
“What the hell? I knew he was a bully, but I didn’t realise he was a psycho.”
“Yeah, it was pretty bad.”
“Wait, but you’re saying you jumped?” Will asked.
“Yeah, I did. Then El showed up and used her powers to catch me. She scared the shit out of Troy and James,” Mike explained.
“You were willing to jump off a cliff to save Dustin?” Will stared in awe at Mike.
“Well, not really. I kind of wanted to jump.”
Will rolled off his back and sat up, his face almost level with Mike’s. “What?”
“I wanted to jump.”
“Mike, what are you saying?”
“You were missing. By that point they’d found your body, and I know we didn’t believe it was you, but...” Mike stared straight into Will’s eyes and saw how hurt he was. “I didn’t know if you were ever going to come back, and I didn’t want to live without you.”
Will felt tears prick his eyes. All those years ago Mike had been so low and Will didn’t even know. He wasn’t there to know. It was his fault Mike felt that way.
“I’m so sorry,” he mumbled.
“Why are you sorry?”
“If I hadn’t gone missing you wouldn’t have...”
“No, no, don’t blame yourself,” Mike said, shaking his head. “Please don’t do that.”
“Mike, you wanted to kill yourself. You do realise how serious that is?” Will pleaded.
“Yeah, I do, because that wasn’t the only time I wanted to.”
Will’s jaw dropped. Horror spread across his face. A shiver ran up his spine. He stared dumbfounded at Mike.
“I went back to the quarry the day after you left for California. I stood on the edge of the cliff for hours,” Mike whispered.
Will still couldn’t speak. He fought hard to stop the tears from spilling over his eyes. Never in a million years could he have dreamed Mike would consider doing something like that.
“Why did you never tell me?” he breathed.
“Because when you’re with me I don’t think about it. It’s only when you leave that those thoughts come back to me.”
“Are you going to think about it when I leave tomorrow?”
Mike didn’t answer.
“Mike, promise me you won’t even consider doing that ever again,” Will begged, a tear falling from his eye.
Mike sighed. He’d been thinking about what he’d do when Will left for the last month. He only ever visited the quarry when he was at his lowest. And he was always at his lowest when he wasn’t with Will.
But the way Will’s eyes were shining with fresh tears, the way he was leaning forward, pleading to Mike, wishing for him to stay alive, gave him enough motivation to keep living.
“Okay.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
Will sank back down onto the mattress and wiped away his tears. “Jesus, Mike.”
“I’m sorry, that was dark. Tell me something nice,” Mike said, trying to change the subject.
“Give me a minute,” Will sniffed, still not quite over what Mike had just revealed to him. He focussed on his breathing, something Jonathan had taught him to do when he started having panic attacks. And the thought of Jonathan unlocked another secret that was a lot less dark than Mike’s.
“Oh yeah, here’s something. A couple of days ago I walked in on Nancy and Jonathan kissing.”
“But they’re broken up.”
“Not anymore,” Will smirked. He always loved the idea of having Nancy as his sister-in-law. “It seems coming back to Hawkins relit the flame.”
“Well, that’s great. I always liked them together. I hope they last this time,” Mike grinned, but then his smile faded. “I always knew me and El wouldn’t last.”
Will stayed silent. Mentioning El around Mike was always risky, and the fact that he’d been the one to bring her up was unusual. Normally he didn't want to talk about her at all.
“I mean, even if she hadn’t left, or died, or whatever happened to her. I think I knew for those final few months that we were finished.”
“Why?” Will asked.
“I don’t know if I ever really loved her. Well, I did love her. Just, maybe not the way a boyfriend should love his girlfriend. I didn’t know what love was supposed to feel like. I’m still not sure if I know,” Mike said, blushing. He wasn’t used to talking about his feelings so openly.
“Since we’re on the topic of El, I need to tell you something,” Will sighed. He’d been considering revealing this to Mike ever since they started telling each other secrets. It was partly the reason he’d suggested spilling secrets in the first place. Had he been sober there was no way he would ever reveal this to Mike, but there was still enough alcohol in his system to give him some courage.
“Go for it,” Mike said, curious.
“You know the painting El commissioned for you in California?”
“Of course. It’s my favourite thing you’ve ever painted,” Mike smiled.
“Well, it wasn’t El who commissioned it.” Will had to muster up every last ounce of strength to say what he said next. “It was me. It was my idea. Everything I said to you that day in the van was me, not El.”
“Oh,” Mike said, his brain short-circuiting. That painting already meant so much to him when he thought it was El’s idea, but finding out it was all Will’s idea completely shattered everything he thought he knew.
“I really did mean everything I said that day. And I’m fine admitting that to you now because, well, we’re just friends now, right?”
“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Mike nodded. He bit his lip, suddenly overcome with the urge to cry. He knew Will had a crush on him, but he hadn't realised how strong it had been. Will’s honesty had granted him with a newfound spirit of openness. “Wait here,” he said, springing to his feet and running up the stairs.
Will barely had time to react before Mike was halfway up the stairs. He cursed himself, thinking Mike wanted to get away from him. He thought maybe he’d revealed too much; that him confessing about the painting made their relationship weird again. But after less than a minute Mike ran back down the stairs, carrying something in his hands. He sat back down, this time on the mattress right next to Will, and handed Will what was in his hands.
“What’s this?” Will asked, observing what he’d been given. It was a bundle of envelopes, all of which were addressed to his house in Lenora.
“I wrote you a letter almost every day when you were in California, but I never sent them,” Mike confessed.
“Why not?”
“I don’t know,” Mike muttered.
Will began removing the elastic band that bound the letters together, but Mike’s hand grabbed his, stopping him.
“Don’t open them here,” he said forcefully, his cheeks blazing red.
“Okay?” Will shot Mike a confused glance.
“Open them when you get to New York,” Mike said. He could think of nothing worse than watching Will read the letters he never sent.
Will examined the outside of the letters. He noted how many there were; one for almost every day he'd been in California. He felt feelings that he’d tried so hard to suppress threatening to resurface. And once again, his drunk self started running his mouth.
“When I had a crush on you it hurt me so bad,” he began. “Because I knew you could never feel the same way. But I couldn’t help it. I’m over it now, but you have no idea how much it hurt.”
“I’m sorry,” Mike said.
“It’s not your fault,” Will replied, shaking his head. “You were just existing.”
“Still, I didn’t exactly make it easy for you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Remember that night we argued in the rain.”
Will nodded shyly. Despite Mike’s vague description, Will knew exactly the night he was talking about. The night Will just wanted to play D&D and Mike had driven him to destroy Castle Byers. The night Mike had told Will it wasn’t his fault he didn’t like girls.
“I think about what I said that night all the time. I shouldn’t have said it,” Mike began.
“I mean, you weren’t wrong,” Will half smiled. “I don’t like girls.”
“That’s not the point. It had nothing to do with what we were arguing about. I was just being an asshole. I didn’t even know that you didn’t... you know... like girls. I didn’t know for sure until you came out.”
That night had played on Mike’s mind far too often in the years since it occurred. It felt like a weight off his chest to finally apologise for it to his face.
“I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to apologise for it. I tried to apologise that night, but you weren’t at your house.”
“You went to my house?”
Mike nodded.
“It was hailing. You rode to my house in the middle of a rainstorm just to apologise?” Will asked, his heart rate increasing.
“Yeah, I felt so awful about it. I didn’t even care that it was raining. But you weren’t there. And then the next time I saw you I froze up and just couldn’t do it.”
The look in Will’s eyes made Mike feel like melting.
“But I never should have said it in the first place. If I’d known what you were going through I never would’ve said it,” Mike said. His knee fell towards Will’s and Will didn’t flinch. He was too focussed on his hands. He fidgeted, not looking Mike in the eye.
“You know, coming out is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” he said, his tone serious. “Which is funny considering all the crazy shit we’ve been through. But I’m so glad I did.” Will smiled again. “I know only a few people know but being able to be free when I'm with you guys is the best feeling in the world.”
“I wish I was as brave as you,” Mike mumbled, pulling his knee back towards himself and shifting away from Will on the mattress.
“What do you mean?” Will asked, noticing Mike move away from him. “You helped kill the Mind Flayer. You helped take down Henry. That's pretty damn brave if you ask me.”
“No, I mean, I wish I could... I wish I could be open like you,” Mike stuttered. A flustered sweat broke on his forehead.
“Mike, we’ve just spent this entire night telling each other secrets. How much more open can you be?” Will chuckled.
“There’s one thing I haven’t told you. I haven’t told anyone.”
Mike felt sick. He’d dug himself into this hole and now he knew he couldn’t get out unless he told Will the truth. But telling Will the truth felt impossible. He stared blankly in front of him, focussing on his D&D folder that was sitting on the shelf.
Will looked at Mike expectantly, waiting for him to continue. He’d never seen Mike look so scared before, not even when they were fighting monsters.
“What is it, Mike?” he asked, urging for an answer. He tried to get Mike to look him in the eyes, but he wouldn’t. Then, without thinking, he placed his hand on top of Mike’s. “Mike, whatever it is you can tell me.”
Mike’s eyes immediately shot towards his hand. He looked at Will’s resting on top of his and suddenly felt like he was going to have a panic attack. But he knew there was no turning back now. No matter how hard he tried to ignore the feelings he had, he finally knew that he couldn’t supress them any longer.
“When you came out, and you said you had a crush on me, I didn’t really know how I felt about it. But then when you said you didn’t have a crush on me anymore, I felt... don’t know,” Mike tried to explain.
“What are you saying, Mike?” Will asked, unsure where Mike was going with this.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is, I liked it better when you had a crush on me.”
Will looked at Mike through furrowed brows. His brain wouldn’t allow him to understand what Mike was saying.
“Mike, I don’t...” he trailed off.
“Final secret?” Mike said, finally turning to face Will. When their eyes met Will noticed that Mike’s were glistening with tears.
Mike took a deep breath. He felt like his heart was going to beat out of his chest. He was practically shaking. But with all the courage he had, he forced himself to tell Will his deepest secret.
“I like you, Will,” he said, so quietly Will could barely hear it.
Will stared at Mike blankly, his mouth hanging open. He thought he knew what Mike, meant, but surely not. Surely Mike couldn’t mean that. That was impossible.
“Of course you like me. We’re best friends,” Will said innocently.
“No, I... I like you. Not the way I like Dustin and Lucas and not the way I liked El either.”
Everything in Mike’s body was telling him to run up the stairs, out of the house, and never return. Every nerve was firing. Every limb was trembling.
“The way I feel about you, well, I’ve never felt that way about anyone else before. And it scares the shit out of me.”
Will couldn’t move. Everything Mike was saying was exactly what he’d yearned for him to say for years. He wasn’t even sure it was real. He thought maybe he’d got so drunk he passed out and he was dreaming.
Will wasn’t answering and Mike wanted the earth to swallow him up. He gazed at Will, pleading for a response, but Will was frozen. He suddenly wished he’d said nothing at all.
“I mean, it doesn’t matter anyway. You’re over me. That’s why I never told you. You know what, just forget I said anything, okay?” Mike rambled, desperate to be done with this conversation.
“I was never over you,” Will breathed, his body sighing in relief. “I told myself that I was but that didn’t make it true. You were never just a crush to me, Mike. You mean everything to me.”
Now it was Mike’s turn to freeze. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Ever since Will had come out, Mike had been toying with the idea of having feelings for Will. He’d tried to push them down, thinking that nothing would ever happen between them anyway. But now that he knew Will still liked him, he realised how much time he’d wasted.
“You still like me?” Mike asked.
“I... I love you, Mike,” Will said, tears welling in his eyes once more.
“I think I love you too, Will,” Mike echoed. And now that he’d said it, he was sure it was true.
A smile spread across Will’s face as tears trickled down his cheeks. He placed his hand back on top of Mike’s and Mike clasped his fingers within Will’s.
“Can I kiss you?” Mike asked timidly.
Will nodded his head, trying his best not to appear too enthusiastic. He’d dreamed about this moment since he was eleven years old. He’d yearned for the feel of Mike’s lips against his for as long as he could remember. Only he never thought his fantasy could come true.
Mike leaned in apprehensively. He’d kissed El plenty of times, but he’d never been this nervous before. He looked at Will’s lips, the lips he’d been subconsciously glancing at for years. He kept one hand clasped in Will’s and slid the other around the back of Will’s neck.
Will expelled a shaky breath at the feel of Mike’s cold hand on his skin. Mike’s hand pulled him forward. Will shut his eyes, still not entirely convinced he wasn’t dreaming. But when his lips touched Mike’s he was finally convinced this was real, because this was nothing like he'd ever dreamed. His imagination had come nowhere near to matching the feeling of Mike’s kiss.
It was hesitant at first. Both sets of lips barely touching each other, too scared to go any further. But then Mike let out a sigh and pressed his lips harder against Will’s. Once they finally committed there was no stopping them. Will ran his free hand up Mike’s back, urging him to move closer. Mike shifted his hand from Will’s neck to his cheek and cupped it gently.
A quiet hum escaped from Will’s throat that drove Mike crazy. He teased his tongue against Will’s lips, begging for entry, and Will obliged. He parted his lips and let his tongue collide with Mike’s. He let go of Mike’s hand so he could tangle both of his in Mike’s hair. Mike moaned quietly in response. With the hand that Will had just let go of Mike gripped Will’s waist, using his fingers to fidget with the hem of Will’s shirt.
Will felt euphoric. Everything he’d ever wanted in his life was happening. He was going to his dream college to study his greatest passion. He was free from all the monsters (supernatural and otherwise) in his life, and now he had the one boy he’d been in love with his whole life. He smiled against Mike’s lips as their tongues danced around each other’s mouths.
Mike felt Will’s lips curl up into a smile and was overcome with an urge to sob. He knew he’d wanted Will for a while now, but Will had wanted Mike his whole life. He cursed himself that he hadn’t realised sooner. And then he cursed himself again when he realised just how late he was.
Mike pulled away from Will, resting his forehead against his. The only sound in the basement was their breathing as it slowed down. After a minute Mike addressed the one thing he really didn’t want to.
“You’re leaving tomorrow,” he whispered.
“Yeah,” Will replied, his smile fading to a frown.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done this when it’s too late.”
Will dropped his hands from Mike’s hair to his shoulders and moved him away from him.
“Mike, you could never be too late. You have no idea how glad I am that you told me how you feel.”
“Yeah, but it doesn’t matter. You’re leaving and I’m staying.”
“You don’t have to stay,” Will said, a nervous tone to his voice.
“Yeah, but I-”
“Come with me.”
“What?”
“Come with me to New York,” Will proposed.
Mike slumped his shoulders and sighed. “What would even I do in New York?”
“So many things,” Will smiled, finding Mike’s lack of self-belief almost amusing. “I’m pretty sure they do writing workshops at my art school. And even if that’s not what you decide to do, you just need to get out of Hawkins. You need to do something.”
Mike considered what Will was saying. Despite everything in his being wanting to get out of Hawkins, there was a teeny-tiny part of him that felt he didn’t belong anywhere else. That he didn’t deserve to belong anywhere else.
“I wouldn’t have anywhere to stay,” he said.
“Well, I’m not saying you have to leave tomorrow,” Will explained. “Find an apartment and move when you’re ready.”
"I don’t know, Will,” Mike said. “I said I would stay here.”
“Mike, you can’t stay in Hawkins for the rest of your life. New York has so many opportunities. I think you’d really like it there. Plus, I’ll be there,” Will blushed.
“Yeah, well, that would be a bonus,” Mike said shyly.
They both giggled nervously, their thighs resting against each other as they ached to be close again.
“So, what do you say?” Will asked. “You coming?”
“Yeah,” Mike beamed.
Will placed his hands on either side of Mike’s face and pulled him in for another kiss. He didn't ever want to stop kissing him. And now that Mike was coming to New York, maybe he wouldn’t have to.
“I mean, obviously I’m going to have to run everything by my parents,” Mike said, pulling away.
“Mhm,” Will said, not in the mood to talk anymore. He pulled Mike back in by the collar of his shirt. They kissed for a few more seconds before Mike spoke again.
“And it’ll probably take me a few months to find a place to stay,” he rambled.
“Mike, please stop talking and kiss me,” Will pleaded, his fingers still grasping Mike’s shirt.
Mike obeyed, closing the gap between their mouths once more. Mike allowed himself to fall into the tranquillity of kissing Will. He still had a lot to think about, and a lot to organise, but he didn’t need to focus on that right now.
Hands slipped under the hems of their shirts. Mouths moved from lips to jaws to necks. By the time they parted again they were high from each other.
“You should go to sleep,” Mike panted, catching his breath. “You have a big day tomorrow.”
“I don’t want to,” Will said. He didn’t want this night to end. He was happy now that he knew Mike would be coming to New York with him, but he’d still have to spend a few months without him.
“Come on, I don’t want your mom getting mad because you’re too tired in the morning,” Mike said.
He shimmied down on the mattress so he was lying on it. Will reluctantly lay down beside Mike. But when Mike wrapped his arm around Will he thought maybe sleeping wouldn't be so bad.
“Is this okay?” Mike asked, uncertainly draping his arm over Will.
“Mhm,” Will hummed. All the tiredness of the day hit him as soon as Mike wrapped him up in his arms. The alcohol had worn off, leaving him groggy and drowsy.
“Good night, Will,” Mike whispered, placing a kiss in Will’s hair.
“Night, Mike,” Will yawned, already half asleep.
When he woke up he’d be leaving Hawkins behind him, but at least now he wasn’t leaving Mike behind too.

A/N: I am a munch Steve truther. I wrote this while I was ovulating so I was in a crazy state of mind. Do enjoy my horny thoughts.
You’d been working at WSQK radio station for the past year and a half, along with your best friend, Robin and your boyfriend, Steve. It was great to have somewhere to go every day, somewhere to mess around and work and act like the entirety of Hawkins wasn’t on military lock down. You and Robin would take turns presenting the show, and Steve was your sound guy. Everything worked like clockwork, and you and Robin had become local celebrities.
“Well, that’s all from me today folks. I got a date with a very special someone that I don’t want to be late for. So, for now, enjoy one more song on me before my fellow radio star, Y/N takes over for your evening wind down. This is ‘Head Over Heels’ by Tears for Fears.”
Robin hit the red ‘mute’ button on the microphone and spun around in her chair.
“That was great,” you smiled at her from the corner of the booth. “Those were some really good picks today.”
“Well, you know me. I am Hawkins’ resident musical genius,” she smirked.
“Oh, so you think you’re better than me?” you joked.
“I didn’t say it.” Robin threw her hands up defensively.
“Ladies, let's not fight now,” Steve said, stepping between the two of you. “You both have equally good taste in music.”
“You’re only saying that because she’s your girlfriend. You know I’m better, Steve,” Robin said, grabbing her jacket from the back of the chair. “Anyway, I gotta run. I’m taking Vickie to the movies and it starts in fifteen minutes.”
“Have fun,” you smiled, waving as Robin scrambled out of the booth.
“Not too much fun,” Steve yelled after her.
‘Head Over Heels’ was still playing through the speakers. You could hear that it was halfway done, so you started getting yourself comfortable. You sat yourself down where Robin had been sitting and moved the microphone level with your mouth.
“You ready?” you asked Steve.
You always tried your best to be professional at the station. Yes, Steve was your boyfriend, but when you were in the booth you were the radio host, and he was the sound guy. But when you turned to look at Steve there was a twinkle in his eye that you usually only ever saw outside the booth.
“Almost,” Steve said. He leaned over and kissed you. You didn’t have time to think before his tongue was pleading its way into your mouth. You hummed, snaking your hands into his hair. Steve was forcing your head back, trying to taste as much of you as possible.
When the song reached its final chorus, Steve finally pulled away.
“Okay, I’m ready,” he slumped back onto his chair.
You stared at him, open-mouthed.
“What was that all about?”
“What, I’m not allowed to kiss my girlfriend?”
“Of course you are, it’s just... I thought we didn’t do that here.”
“I’ve been here all damn day,” Steve whined. “There are two of you and only one of me. We need another sound guy or something. I’ve been sitting here all day and I got a lot of energy.”
“A lot of energy?” you smirked.
“Yeah,” Steve said, his voice low.
“Well, we can burn some of that energy after this, okay. It’s just a couple of hours. You can be professional for a couple of hours, right?”
Steve let out a little whimper, like a puppy. His big brown eyes got even bigger. You almost felt bad for him.
“Steve?” you said in that commanding tone that immediately made him melt. “Can you be professional for me for a couple of hours?”
“Yeah, okay,” Steve sighed.
During the last few beats of the song you pulled your headphones on and prepared yourself. As a kid you weren’t the most talkative person, but the radio show had really helped you grow in confidence. And it helped that Steve was there. Sometimes you imagined that it was only him listening.
“Good evening Hawkins, and welcome to your evening wind down with me, Y/N,” you said in your enthusiastic radio host voice. Steve played an applause sound effect.
“And thank you to Rockin’ Robin for getting you through the day. Guess what guys? It’s Friday. It’s 8pm. Well done to everyone who made it through the work week. And get ready to chill with me this evening.”
You did a bit more talking, with added sound effects from Steve, then ran an ad, and then you played your first song of the session, ‘Start Me Up’ by The Rolling Stones.
You dedicated your Friday evening slot to songs you thought teens would want to make out to in their cars. That’s what you and Steve had spent your Friday nights doing when you were seventeen. You had enough experience to know exactly what they’d want to hear.
You nodded along to the song while examining the sound board, making sure everything was in order. Then you felt a breath at the back of your neck.
“Steve,” you sighed. “We’re working.”
It’s not that you didn’t want Steve to be doing these things. But this was work. Once you crossed that boundary there was no going back. You just had to get through the next few hours and then he was all yours.
“Please,” Steve whispered, his breath tickling you.
“Steve, what do you want me to do? Cancel the show?” you asked, spinning your seat so he couldn’t reach the back of your neck.
“Well, that would be ideal,” Steve smiled.
“You’re an idiot,” you laughed. You took off your headphones and got up from your chair. You placed your hand on Steve’s chest and pushed him backwards until he fell back into his seat.
“Now sit there until we’re done.”
As the song finished you put your headphones back on and unmuted the microphone.
“Well, that’s certainly started me up. What about you, sound guy?”
You turned to Steve who seemed startled. Usually he was prepared for anything you threw his way, but he stared at you blankly.
“Uh, sorry guys, sound guy’s had a long day. He’s a little tired. But we love what a good job he does here at WSQK radio station. We love you, sound guy. Give yourself a round of applause.”
Steve was more prepared this time. He plugged in the applause tape and played it.
“That’s it. Good boy,” you smiled at Steve mischievously. “Okay, we’re going to take it back now and play a couple of 70s hits that I know you all love.”
You hit play on Rod Stewart’s ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’, and lined up a couple of songs for after. You had about fifteen minutes now where you didn’t have to speak. This meant you got to properly talk to Steve without interuption for the first time that day. But when you turned around to face him again you knew he still wasn’t backing down.
He was sitting there, head resting on his hand, legs spread open.
“Good boy, huh?” he smirked.
“Okay, okay, that just slipped out,” you said, shaking your head.
“I really wish it hadn’t, because now I want you even more,” Steve whined.
“Steve, come on. Maybe try talking to your girlfriend instead of trying to get in her pants.”
Steve groaned dramatically. You secretly loved it when he got all bratty. But if you let him know that you knew it would be over.
“Okay, how was your day?”
For the remaining time Steve managed to engage in conversation not revolving around how much he wanted to touch you.
When the last commercial, an ad for Peanut Butter Boppers, played you got back on the microphone.
“Hey folks, if you’re just tuning in, you’re listening to the WSQK evening wind down with me Y/N.”
The next few songs and breaks went off without a hitch. Steve seemed to have finally calmed down again although he was still eyeing you with hungry eyes. It gave you an idea.
“This next song is a new one. It only came out a couple of days ago, but I think some of you are really going to like it. And for one person in particular, I know you can relate to this right now. This is Eric Carmen’s ‘Hungry Eyes’,” you grinned.
“Oh, you think you’re smart, huh?” Steve said.
“Yeah, I do actually.”
You saw Steve look at the clock on the wall. It was only nine. You still had a whole hour to do before you were finished.
“This sucks,” Steve sighed, folding his arms like a toddler having a tantrum. “You’re cruel.”
“I’m cruel? Steve, I’m just trying to do my job,” you said.
“Please just kiss me.” Steve pouted his bottom lip.
“No.”
“Please. Just a kiss,” he begged.
God damn those puppy dog eyes. You couldn’t help but smile at his pouty little face.
“Okay, fine,” you said.
You got up and walked over to Steve. He was practically panting at the thought of a simple kiss. It was making your heartbeat speed up. You placed your hands on the handles of the chair, leaned down, and kissed Steve. His hands immediately grabbed your ass as he attempted to pull you on his lap. But you could hear the song ending. You pulled away and quickly got back into position.
You were slightly out of breath but tried your best to hide it. Kissing Steve was a bad idea. Now not only was he hungry for you, but you were hungry for him too. You could barely concentrate on what you were saying and quickly sped through the link so you could move on to the next song: ‘West End Girls’ by Pet Shop Boys.
You had another two songs lined up after that, so it was another long break. You mentally prepared yourself to refuse Steve’s advances again, even though it was the last thing you wanted to do. But when you spun around in your chair your jaw dropped.
Steve was sitting slumped in his chair, his jeans shimmied down, his dick in his hand.
“Steve, what the fuck?” you shouted.
“I’m sorry, it was getting painful,” he moaned, moving his hand slowly up and down his dick. He looked so pathetic. It was making you feel a warmth between your legs.
Steve whimpered quietly as he stroked himself. You stared at each other from across the booth, your chests rising and falling rapidly.
“This would feel so much better if it was your hand,” Steve said. “Or your-”
“Steve, I’m not having sex with you in the fucking radio station,” you snapped, despite your entire body wishing the opposite. You looked at the sound board to check how much time you had left until the next link. Six minutes.
You bit your lip, knowing you shouldn’t, but against your better judgement you got up.
“Okay, maybe I can help you out a little bit,” you said, sitting down on his lap and taking his dick from his hand.
“Ugh, thank you,” he sighed, letting out a shaky breath of relief. “Thank you.”
You slowly pumped your hand up and down. Steve’s hips bucked up with every stroke, and he whimpered more needily each time.
“Fuck,” he gulped, wrapping his hand around your thigh and digging his fingers into your skin.
The short skirt you were wearing meant his hand was on bare skin, painfully close to your pussy. You took a deep breath, trying not to get ahead of yourself before the show was over.
As the song began to fade to a close you reluctantly took your hand off Steve’s dick and rushed back to your chair.
“Fuck, I’m so close, please,” Steve whined, tears in his eyes.
“Sorry, Steve, duty calls,” you replied smuggly, pulling the headphones on again. You loved leaving Steve hanging like that. The only problem was it was making you want him more than ever.
You watched him reach for his dick again, missing the feeling of your hand wrapped around him.
“Don’t you dare touch yourself,” you ordered. “I’m not done with you yet.”
Steve slowly moved his hand away, taking a deep breath.
“Hawkins, we are nearing the end of my time with you. Just a few more songs to get you through the night. I don’t know about you guys but I’m having a really good night tonight. What about you, sound guy?”
You looked around at Steve who was slumped on his chair, legs spread, dick out, eyes shut.
Steve gave you an annoyed look before pressing the button for an upwards riff on an electric guitar.
“Hell yeah. Sound guys feeling good and so am I.”
You knew this teasing was killing Steve. But he deserved it. He was fucking up your ‘be professional at work’ rule. It wasn’t your fault that his eyes were irresistible. What harm was there in messing with him a little?
But then you made an awful mistake.
“And just to make sure absolutely everyone is feeling good, this next song goes out to all the lovers out there,” you said, playing the next song you had lined up.
The opening riff of ‘Dirty Diana’ by Michael Jackson began to play, and you immediately regretted it.
Images of the previous night flooded your mind. You were on top of Steve, hips rolling, taking all of him in as he whined beneath you, nails digging into your thighs. ‘Dirty Diana’ was playing from Steve’s stereo; volume screwed up all the way to drown out the sound of your moans as you both came.
When you turned around to face Steve, you could already tell he was thinking of the same thing. The memory of the previous night unlocked something within you that you couldn’t repress. As soon as you made eye contact with Steve you practically threw your headphones off, straddled Steve’s lap, and pulled your underwear to the side.
Steve’s hand was already on his dick, guiding it into you with no warning.
“Fuck,” you both sighed, all the tension in your body instantly melting away as you slid down onto Steve’s dick.
Knowing that the song was only about four minutes long, you didn’t waste any time. You instantly started riding Steve hard. His mouth fell open. He wasn’t trying to be quiet. You planted your hands on his shoulders, using them to steady yourself as you bounced up and down. Steve’s hands clawed at your back desperately.
He was already close when you started and you were surprised he’d lasted more than a minute. But you could feel him starting to twitch. You could see in the way his eyebrows furrowed, and his moans got breathier, that he was about to cum.
“Cum for me,” you whispered into his ear.
And that was all it took. You felt Steve spill out inside you. His hips bucked up, pushing him even deeper.
“Shit. Thank you,” he said, eyes glassy with tears from the long-awaited relief.
You kissed him, letting him rest inside you for a few seconds. You didn’t want to get off him. Now that Steve had reached his climax you wanted nothing more than to join him. But you didn’t have time for that now.
“Now, will you be a good boy and behave?” you said as you pulled your mouth away from his. “The shows almost over.”
Steve nodded but a glint in his eye made you reluctant to believe him. You begrudgingly got off Steve’s lap during the final chorus, letting every inch of him fall out of you. The lack of him was infuriating. You could feel his cum dripping out between your legs. It was driving you insane.
“Did you cum?” Steve asked as you walked back over to your station.
“Steve, unlike you it takes me longer than a couple of minutes to have an orgasm,” you laughed.
“Oh really?” Steve smirked. That glint in his eye still there.
“Yes, really,” you said, turning away from him.
“We’ll see about that,” Steve whispered when you had your headphones on again.
You began talking into the microphone again, but your breath hitched when you felt Steve’s warm hand on your leg. You turned your head to see him on his knees on the floor beside you. You gave him a stern look that said, “what the fuck are you doing?” But he didn’t stop. And, in truth, you didn’t want him to.
You stumbled slightly on your words as Steve ran his hands up your legs, making all your nerves fire. He rested both hands on the top of your thighs and spun the chair around so you were facing him. You had to grab the microphone off the table and hold it in your hands so that you were still close enough to it.
“And in some late-night news before I leave you all, did you guys know Enzo’s is starting a half price deal on We-ednesday nights,” you stuttered as Steve slid his hands down in between your thighs. Without thinking, you spread your legs open, and Steve didn’t waste any time getting in there.
“So, Wednesday night sounds pretty good fo-or a date night now, doesn’t it?”
You cleared your throat, trying to remember what you were supposed to say next. You shut your eyes, concentrating hard. But it was so hard to think with Steve’s face inches from your pussy. You could feel his breath against your clit.
“Thank you to Enzo’s for sponsoring WSQK,” you said.
Steve fingers were lightly rubbing your inner thighs. Every part of your body was screaming for him to do more. You knew it was a bad idea. You knew you should have pushed him away and told him to wait the literal five minutes you had left of the show. But then Steve’s finger brushed against your pussy as he pushed your underwear to the side, and you couldn’t resist it anymore. Something about this made you feel bad. And that turned you on even more.
“Now guys, as you know our show is coming to ah- an end.”
You had to turn the microphone away from your mouth and gasp as Steve’s tongue made contact with your pussy. His hair tickled your thighs. You gulped and took a deep breath, composing yourself.
“But, as always, before we finish, I’m going to read out all the shout outs we got sent today.”
You leaned over to grab the page that Robin had printed out earlier of all the shout outs that had been faxed in. Steve groaned when you pushed your chair away from him, sending vibrations threw you. A slight whimper escaped you but the microphone wasn’t close enough to pick it up.
“Okay, f-first one is from Stacey, she wants to wish her best friend Brianna a happy birthday. Happy birthday from everyone at WSQK, Brianna.”
You barely got through the next few shout outs. Steve’s tongue was inside you, licking his own cum out of you. His nose was pushing against your clit, rubbing it as his head bopped up and down. You grabbed his hair with one hand, pulling on the strands tightly in desperation. You were trying your best to keep your breathing normal, but the way Steve’s tongue was moving, it was nearly impossible.
“Ok, and, uh, last one.” You cleared your throat again. You were barely able to keep your eyes open. On hearing that you were nearly finished with the show Steve decided to push his luck. He moved his mouth upwards, trailing his tongue up your pussy until he reached your clit. And then began sucking.
“This one is from, um, Erica,” you panted. Your hand gripped Steve’s hair even tighter. Your whole body was tense, your legs twitching.
“Erica wants to tell Tina that she didn’t hit Josh on pu-urpose and that she’s a fake, nasty b- oh, reminder everyone, please keep your shout outs clean, we’re a family radi- fuck!”
You immediately went back on your word, swearing on the air as Steve slid two fingers inside you, still sucking on your sensitive clit. Your hand flew to your mouth in shock. Steve faltered for a moment when he heard your outburst. His mouth lifted off you slightly, his fingers lay motionless inside you. There was a few seconds of silence before you spoke again.
“Sorry, guys, uh, sound guy startled me there,” you said, your face turning red. “Um, speaking of sound guy, I know sometimes he maybe isn’t the best at the actual sounds, but believe me, he does a lot of work behind the sc-cenes here.”
You felt Steve smile against your clit. He resumed his work, fingers pumping in and out of you as his tongue circled your clit. It was all too good and all too much. You were dripping.
“Well, Hawkins, I think tha-at's all we have time for tonight.” You were speaking far too quickly now, but you needed to wrap this up fast. “Rockin’ Robin will be back with you tomorrow. He-ere's one more to keep you going until tomo-orrow. Goodnight Hawkins.”
You hit play on the final song and threw the microphone down on the desk, slamming the mute button. Moans immediately erupted from you as the opening bars of ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ by Def Leppard faded in.
“Fuck, Steve,” you cried. Everything you’d been holding in for the last five minutes exploded from you at once. You rocked your hips forward, burying Steve’s face in your pussy. Your moans were breathy and loud. Your head fell back, eyes shut, mouth open, hands clawing Steve’s hair.
Steve was eating you up like he was starving. His fingers curled deep inside you, sending you over the edge.
“Oh God, Steve,” you breathed, feeling yourself start to unravel.
You grinded your hips against Steve’s face as you came. Then your entire body relaxed. Your head dropped down from exhaustion. Hiding what Steve had been doing had really taken it out of you.
Steve licked you clean as you panted, chest heaving.
Then Steve’s head popped up. He had a cocky smirk on his face as he wiped your cum off his chin with his thumb.
“You’re a fucking asshole,” you whispered.
“You love me,” he smiled up at you.
“My mom listens to this show, you know,” you said, subconsciously running your fingers through his hair.
“Well, you did a pretty good job hiding it.”
“Ha, I wouldn't have had to hide it if you hadn’t done it,” you scoffed.
“Come on, you liked it,” Steve said.
“Fuck you,” you rolled your eyes, knowing he was right.
“Hm, already ready for round two?” Steve smirked.
“Shut up,” you said sternly, but inside you were smiling.
You leaned down and kissed Steve, tasting yourself on his tongue. You kissed Steve until the song ended. Then you did the mundane tasks to shut the station down. You exited the booth, Steve following you, eyeing you like a dog eyes a bone.
“That was so not okay, Steve,” you said as you locked the door to the station.
“It was so hot though,” Steve replied, standing behind you with his hands on your waist.
“We’re not doing that again,” you said, turning around to face Steve.
“You don’t mean that.”
Steve was right. You didn’t mean that. Because as risky as it was, the risk was the thrill. You felt dangerous. And that made it even hotter. You would never suggest doing it again. But if Steve just so happened to get on his knees in front of you while you were broadcasting, well, you weren’t going to push him away.

Content: This is a joke, okay? They're all making fun of Mike but I genuinely feel bad for him. I just know they all think he's delulu.
Will, Lucas, Dustin and Max all got up from the Wheeler’s kitchen table.
“Thanks for the lasagna, Mrs Wheeler,” Lucas said.
“It was delicious. Your best one yet,” Dustin complimented.
“Thanks Mrs Wheeler,” Max said.
“Thanks Karen,” Will said. He’d known Karen since he was five. He’d made it up to first name privilege by now.
Mike waved bye to them as they walked down the Wheeler’s drive. Their tears had subsided. It was the end of their days of playing D&D in Mike’s basement. But it wasn’t like they weren’t going to see each other ever again. They still had the rest of the summer to hang out before they all left for college.
But the rest of the party weren’t so sure if Mike would be up to hanging out. When they got to the end of the drive Dustin finally piped up.
“Okay,” he said. “I don’t want to spoil anyone’s idea of what Mike just said about El, but does anyone else… kind of… not… believe him?”
“Oh my God, yes,” Will sighed, grabbing Dustin’s arm. “What was he saying?”
“The poor guy’s lost it.” Max shook her head.
“Seriously lost it,” Lucas agreed.
“Like, of course I want El to be alive. But there’s no way,” Will said.
“The way Hop described it, Kali was bleeding so bad. There’s no way she survived long enough to make an illusion of El," Max explained.
"And even if she did survive, the lab would've been the first thing to blow up. She would've been dead as soon as the bomb went off," Dustin added.
The group walked a little further down the street. They truly did want to believe Mike. El was their best friend. She was Will's sister. They wanted more than anything for El to be alive, living her life in some far off land. But, unlike Mike, they weren't delusional. In the 18 months since El's death they'd learned to move on. To remember her, but accept her death.
"Do we tell him?" Lucas said when they got to the end of the street.
"I don't know," Dustin sighed. "I think he might not survive if we tell him."
"Yeah, we might as well let him live in hope," Will agreed. "It's not harming anyone."
"Will, I bet your glad you're over him now," Max laughed. "Really dodged a bullet with that one."
"Shut up." Will shoved Max playfully.
"Maybe we should tell Karen. Just in case he tries to run away and find her," Lucas suggested.
"Hmm, yeah, that's not a bad idea," Dustin nodded. "Like, I know we're joking now, but he genuinely sounds insane."
"He needs help," Will added.
"So we're in agreement. We let him believe, but keep an eye on him. Tell Karen, and maybe Hop and Joyce too," Lucas said.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Mike was a storyteller. He was used to making up things, imagining the impossible. But that skill had gone one step too far and everyone knew it. All they could do was humour him.

A/N: I wrote this like two years ago but I realised I’ve never posted it here so please do enjoy. Scoops Ahoy Steve you will forever be missed.
It was just after four when you entered the bright, neon lit mall. Walking home from work with Steve had become a tradition for the two of you since his summer job began. You worked in the grocery store down the street and, since you two were neighbours, you waited around so you could walk home with him. Steve’s shift ended at five but you had a few stores you needed to go to before you went to meet him. First, you went to the Gap to return a shirt that didn’t fit, then you picked up two pastries from the bakery. One for you and one for Steve (although Steve usually ended up eating yours too. Oh well, what did you care? He gave you free ice cream). At 4:50 you approached Scoops Ahoy. Despite it being so close to closing time the place was still bustling. Before you even spotted Steve, Robin caught your eye cleaning a table in the corner of the store. She waved you over.
“Hey,” you said as you walked over. “What is going on in here today?”
Robin pointed at a sign on the window that read BUY ONE CONE, GET THE NEXT ONE FREE. “You give the people free ice cream and they come in hoards.”
Robin made small talk with you as she finished cleaning the table and you looked towards the counter. There Steve stood, a frantic look on his face as he served the never ending line of customers. Robin followed your gaze.
“This has not been a good day for Dingus,” she commented. “On a good day his flirting is subpar, but his stressed flirting is so much worse.”
“Yeah, and you’re really helping him, aren’t you?” you replied, shaking your head at Robin as she stood there idly holding a tray of dirty dishes.
“Oh, shit, yeah,” Robin quickly remarked before rushing behind the counter to help Steve.
After a few minutes the crowd had dwindled and Steve was finally able to look up from the plethora of ice cream below him. He waved tiredly at you and you gave him a sympathetic smile and held up the bag of pastries. The sight of them seemed to give him some energy.
When the last customer had been served Steve ran into the back to change out of his sailor uniform. You decided to start nibbling on your pastry. Better to eat it now when Steve wasn’t looming over you with his little puppy dog eyes, begging for a bite.
But you had only taken two bites when Steve reappeared, still dressed in red, white and blue.
“Robin, where’s my bag?” he asked, a worried expression on his face.
“I don’t know. I didn’t touch it.” Robin said uncaringly.
“Well, it’s not in there,” he retorted.
“Let’s have a look,” you said, tucking your pastry back in the bag.
You went through the door behind the counter and searched for the bag. The small bag room was lined with coat hooks and benches, kind of like a school locker room, you thought. But Steve was right. There was no bag. It was gone.
“What am I gonna do?” Steve whined.
“What was in the bag?” you asked.
“Just my clothes and my wallet. But there was only like five dollars in it so it’s not a big deal,” he sighed.
“Wait, mine’s not here either,” Robin declared.
“How did they even go missing. I thought no one was allowed back here,” you wondered.
Steve and Robin stood in thought for a moment before Robin whispered, “Oh, God.”
“What?” Steve said sharply.
“Remember earlier when you were out the back getting more cones?” Robin began.
“Yeah…”
“Well, there was no one at the counter and I really had to pee so I ran to the bathroom…” she trailed off.
“And?” Steve pushed.
“And I may or may not have accidently left the keys to that door on the counter.”
“Oh my God, Robin,” Steve put his head in his hands.
“I’m sorry,” Robin pleaded. “When I got back they were in the same place I left them so I assumed no one had touched them.”
Steve sank down on one of the benches.
“Hey, its ok,” you said, trying to keep them both calm. “It’s not like someone stole money from the register. It was an honest mistake.” You smiled at Robin. “Now let’s go home, Sailor,” you said, pulling Steve up.
“No, I can’t walk home dressed like this,” he complained.
“Well, you’re going to have to,” you said bluntly.
Steve let out an overdramatic sigh before walking out of the room.
When Steve and Robin had the store locked up, you walked to the entrance of Starcourt where you parted ways with Robin and began the walk home with Steve. He looked around self-consciously, wrapping his arms around his body as if it would make him invisible.
“Steve, stop that. No one’s going to care,” you said.
“Yeah, well, I care,” he replied.
You wanted to try to distract him so you started asking him about his day. It did not help.
“It was awful,” he began. “Why can I not get girls anymore? When I was in high school I could’ve had anyone I wanted.”
“Yeah but when you were in high school you were an asshole,” you reminded him. “And besides, most of the girls you flirt with are probably bitches.”
You opened the bag of pastries and offered him one. He took it eagerly.
“Yeah, I guess,” he mumbled, spitting crumbs on the sidewalk. “It has to be this stupid uniform,” he continued. “How come you get to wear whatever you want to work and I have to wear this Halloween costume.”
“Because I don’t work at Scoops Ahoy. The best ice cream in all of Hawkins, matey,” you laughed, putting on a fake pirate accent.
The corner of Steve’s mouth turned up slightly. However, as if on cue, a loud, obnoxious truck rounded the corner. As it neared closer to you it began to slow down. You heard wolf whistles as the front window rolled down.
“Wow, Steve, you have never looked better,” Tommy yelled out the window.
“Yeah, I bet Nancy’s sorry she let you go,” another one of Steve’s old friends joked.
You grabbed Steve’s arm and started walking faster, mumbling at him to ignore them.
“Aww, Stevey Weevey needs a girl to save him,” Tommy jeered. “Go on and run home to mommy, you big pussy!”
And with that the truck let out a mighty rev, picking up speed. You held up your middle finger towards the truck as it sped away.
You walked in silence for a minute, unsure of what to say.
“You okay?” you finally asked.
“Yeah, I’m peachy,” Steve said sarcastically. “I’ve never been better. I’ve got a dead end job, no girlfriend, no money, my parents don’t give a shit about me and I’m dressed like a fucking sailor. So, of course, Y/N, I’m okay!”
“Steve, stop putting yourself down,” you said as you neared Steve’s house. “This is only a summer job. And those girls you flirt with are crazy. Who wouldn’t want you when you’re dressed like that.”
“Well, today at least five different girls almost choked trying not to laugh in my face, so obviously a lot of people don’t want me,” Steve spat, reaching into his pocket for his keys.
“Yes they do!” you reassured him.
“Who? Please, if you’re so sure that people want me, please enlighten me as to who those people may be.”
Steve fumbled with the keys in the lock of his front door. By the time he finally opened it you still hadn’t said anything.
“See, you can’t even think of anyo-,”
“Me!” you shouted, a little too loudly.
Steve looked at you, a baffled expression on his face. “What?” he asked.
“Me,” you sighed. “I want you. I don’t understand how no one else does.”
Steve froze in the doorway and you immediately regretted saying anything.
After a few seconds he said, “Are you serious?”
“Yes, Steve,” you sighed, exasperated. “Is it really that hard to believe that someone likes you?”
Steve shrugged and couldn’t quite meet your gaze.
“Come with me,” you ordered, grabbing his hand and pulling him into his house. You quickly climbed the stairs and headed straight for his bedroom. Planting him in front of the floor length mirror you said, “Look at yourself. Do you not realise how attractive you are?”
“Not with this stupid hat on,” Steve replied, his cheeks blushing red.
“Then gimme.” You whipped the hat off his head and placed it on your own. “Now I’m the stupid one wearing the hat.”
“You don’t look stupid,” Steve said quietly.
“And neither do you,” you said, annoyed at his lack of confidence. “My God, Steve, that’s what I’m trying to show you. The only people who think you look stupid are assholes who you’re not even friends with, and yourself.”
“You don’t think I look stupid?” Steve asked shyly.
“I actually think you look adorable,” you smiled.
Steve turned back towards the mirror and surveyed himself for a moment. “I guess… if you’re into… sailors.”
“Well, just one sailor in particular,” you smirked, placing your hand on Steve’s arm. He turned to face you so there was only inches between your lips.
Steve exhaled a shaky breath before you closed the gap between the two of you. Immediately your hands found his hair and you ran your hands through the brown strands.
After a moment Steve pulled away, his cheeks flushed.
“I guess now would be a good time to tell you that I like you too,” he said.
“Yeah, well, I gathered that,” you replied.
“I just didn’t think you liked me. I mean, I’m-.”
“No, don’t you dare start that again,” you interjected. “You are so pretty and funny and, I know it’s stupid, but every time I see you dressed like that all I want to do is rip those little shorts off you,” you rambled without thinking.
“Do it then,” Steve mumbled.
You raised your brow at him, unsure if he was serious.
“Do it,” he repeated before kissing you again. The sailor hat that you forgot was on your head slipped back and Steve tossed it on the ground before running his hands through your hair.
Your heart rate increased as Steve breathed into your mouth. Your tongues were intertwining before you remembered Steve’s request.
Your hands, which had somehow found their way inside the back of Steve’s shirt, now moved to the front of his shorts and you unbuttoned them hastily. Your breath caught in your throat and you pulled away from the kiss as your hand rubbed up against the bulge in Steve’s underwear.
“Hello, Sailor,” you smirked.
Steve blushed and began pulling you towards his bed.
“Ah, ah, ah,” you said, not moving from your position. “We’re gonna do it right here.”
Steve looked at you like a lost puppy. “What? You mean…”
“I mean, we’re gonna have sex right here in front of this mirror so you can see how pretty you look when you’re fucked out,” you explained bluntly.
Steve gulped nervously so you placed your hand on his cheek and whispered, “You’re so beautiful.”
You practically felt Steve’s dick twitch in his boxers at the praise you’d given him.
“Ok, take off your shirt,” you instructed, beginning to take off your own. By the time Steve had pulled the blue sailor shirt over his head you had already removed your shirt and pants.
“You wanna take your underwear off for me?” you asked as Steve gawked at you. He nodded and, not taking his eyes off your body, pulled down his boxers, leaving him fully naked in front of you.
“Now, turn around,” you said, grabbing him by the shoulders and moving him so he faced the mirror.
You could tell he wasn’t looking at himself, his eyes transfixed on the corner of the mirror.
“Steve, look,” you ordered, not moving from behind him. “Look at yourself and tell me why you think no one wants you.”
Steve’s eyes slowly scanned his body in the mirror. He frowned at a bruise on his stomach. He’d sustained it when Billy had beat him up and it never quite healed. You reached around and lightly ran your fingers over it. Steve’s stomach tensed as your delicate touch sent shivers through him.
“I think it makes you look badass,” you whispered in his ear.
A small smile grew across Steve’s lips.
“Anything else?” you asked.
Steve stayed silent, his eyes continuing to examine his body. After a few moments he still hadn’t said anything.
“There is nothing wrong with you, Steve,” you said. “Even you can’t find anything wrong with you.”
Steve looked into the reflection of your eyes in the mirror, a tense look on his face.
“Now, tell me you think you’re pretty,” you said, moving your hand from where it was resting on his stomach down to stroke his dick with one finger.
Steve let out a desperate sigh but didn’t say a word.
Again, you ran your finger along his erect cock, just once, painfully slowly.
“Come on, Steve, I’m not going any further until you tell me you’re pretty.”
Steve gave you a pleading look. It hurt you that he couldn’t even bring himself to say the words.
You brought your lips right up to his ear, your heavy breath blowing his hair.
“Tell me,” you whispered, placing a kiss on his neck.
“I’m pretty.” His mumble was barely audible.
“What was that?” you asked, hovering your hand over his dick in anticipation.
“I’m pretty,” he said, louder than last time but lacking the enthusiasm you were looking for.
“Come on, Steve,” you urged, your hand wrapping around the base of his dick, your other caught in his hair.
“I’m pretty!” Steve practically moaned as he thrust his hips in your hand.
“That’s a good boy,” you praised, beginning to move your hand along his dick.
Steve let out a high pitched whine and exhaled hard. You continued kissing his neck from behind, causing his head to roll back. You pulled away and noticed his eyes were closed.
“Now, now, Steve,” you tutted. “Open your eyes. You need to see how beautiful you look when I fuck you,” you said.
Steve couldn’t help but jut his hips harder into your hand. His eyes were filled with desperation when he opened them again.
“See, you’re gorgeous,” you said, tugging on his hair lightly.
“Mmh” Steve hummed, his dick jerking, precum seeping from the tip.
Then, his mouth fell open, a quiet whimper escaping his lips.
You could tell he was about to finish. But you weren’t giving in that easily. You pulled your hand away from his dick. Steve gave you a pleading look in the mirror. He was about to speak but you interrupted him by kissing him roughly. You removed your underwear with one hand and pulled Steve down onto the floor. You got on top of him, hovering just above his dick, which was throbbing from the loss of contact.
“Please,” Steve begged, gripping your thighs and giving you an aching look.
“No, don’t look at me,” you reminded him, and turned his head to the side so he was once again facing the mirror. “I want you to see the look on your face.”
Steve moaned loudly as you lowered yourself onto his dick, but he didn’t look away. He kept staring at his own reflection.
“Good boy,” you said, beginning to grind slowly up and down. Then you turned his head back around to face you. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?” you asked.
Steve nodded his head. “Yes it was,” he said breathily. “You have no idea how badly I wanted to be looking at you instead.”
“Well, as a reward, I’ll allow you to do that for a while.”
Steve let out quiet whimpers in time with your grinding. But he didn’t take his eyes off you. He didn’t close his eyes or roll his head back. His gaze was fixed on your every move. He was in awe of you. And you were going to take advantage of that.
Your hand was still covered in his precum so you began to slowly lick it off, smearing it around your mouth. Steve’s eyes looked as though they’d glazed over.
“You like that?” you asked.
“Yeah,” Steve sighed.
You slowed your movements and leaned down, kissing Steve messily. The precum on your face transferred onto his and the taste of it mixed in your mouths. You pulled away and wiped the remainder of it from your face with your thumb.
Steve stared at you in shock. He couldn’t even articulate words anymore.
When you were sat upright again you picked up your pace, bouncing harder up and down, taking in every inch of his dick.
Steve’s fingers clawed at your thighs, his nails leaving half-moons where they dug into your skin. You noticed his eyes lingering on you covered chest so you asked, “You want me to take it off?”
Steve’s only response was a breathy whine so you took that as a yes. You unclasped your bra and slipped it off. Immediately Steve’s hands shifted from their position on your thighs. He slid them up either side of your abdomen but paused just under your chest. Your tits bounced as you rode him faster. Steve stared at them in a daze before moving his hands up further, squeezing your tits gently.
The noises that were coming from Steve’s mouth were non-stop now. And he was getting louder with every thrust of your hips.
“Ok, that’s enough of me,” you said, turning his head towards the mirror again. Steve whined, annoyedly.
“Please,” he whispered. “You’re so-,”
“Ah, ah,” you interrupted, grinding harder than before as you felt a heat arise in your crotch. “You’re supposed to be saying that sort of stuff to yourself, not me.”
But Steve wasn’t listening to a word you were saying anymore. You couldn’t stop him from rolling his eyes back in pleasure.
“Fuu…” he whined as the heat within you spread. You felt a sensation between your legs as Steve let go.
You rode him until his moans started to recede. His hands fell on his stomach and he tried to catch his breath. His eyes fluttered open and he looked at your reflection first, saying nothing as he took in the image of you on top of him.
And then Steve looked at himself properly for the first time. His mouth, smothered with his own cum. His hair, sticking up in all directions on his sweaty head. His neck, bruised from your kisses.
“Oh my God, I’m a mess,” he breathed.
“No, Steve, you look-,”
“I look hot,” Steve said unexpectedly. He chuckled at the look of shock on your face.
“I’m a hot mess,” he smiled.
You leaned down and kissed him again, overcome with pride that he’d finally said something nice about himself. You could feel the smile on his lips as he kissed you back.
“Now do you see that all the girls that don’t want you are just insane?” you asked, moving a strand of hair out of his eye.
“It doesn’t matter what they think anymore,” Steve replied. “There’s only one girl I want. And I think she wants me too.”
“Yeah, I think she does,” you giggled, kissing him again, happy he could finally see what you saw in him.
That he was a hot mess.
