I seriously need people to stop acting like the modern musical era is the creative apocalypse.
This has happened often enough that you should recognize the patterns of this. A new series of genres emerging and supplanting the old ones in the popcultural spotlight is a natural cycle.
And having more accessibility for making music is a good thing. It’s how we get more dope music to listen to. You just have to be okay with supporting indie artists (which was what a lot of grunge and punk artists were before they got signed to a big label back in the day).
I’m pushing 30, y’all. I’m supposed to be at the age where I’m claiming that kids these days Don’t Get It™️. And yet because everyone takes Rick Beato at his word, I’m instead taking up the proverbial sword to defend how fucking cool the kids are with the way they’re experimenting with music these days.
Some popular stuff is still gonna be shitty. But some of it is popular for a reason. Just because you personally don’t like it and prefer older genres doesn’t mean the new stuff doesn’t have value, or is the result of “corruption.”
Without that sort of “corruption” we wouldn’t have had the golden age of classic rock everyone keeps lionizing.
Art will exist whether you like it or not. It doesn’t need you to legitimize it.
Some D&D party is out there playing the coolest campaign ever.
I saw this when it was posted! Some highlights from the comments:
Demons and monsters that torture people because they feed on human suffering are so dumb. People are suffering everywhere my guy go literally any place and take a deep whiff.
Monster that feeds on suffering becomes a professional caretaker for people with chronic pain and terminal illnesses. They can't change the fact that these people are suffering, but they help a bit and in the meantime they're fat and happy off that Sweet Sweet ambient pain in the air.
Two towns over there's a demon lord trying to get their cult to abduct people for torture, but they keep getting stopped by heroes and the like, so they're barely scraping by. Meanwhile Belogarth the Registered PCA is chowing down on back pain, medication side effects and looming mortality for eight hours a day and has become the most powerful demon on earth without realizing it.
"But don't their clients feel weird knowing that they're feeding off their suffering?" No they think it's hilarious and they're real shits about it.
Finally a medical professional who believes that they are in pain. Because the fucker is actively chowing down on your agony. Not only am I going to get treated by them I'm going to invite all of my chronically ill friends to come as well.
Turns out if you treat the pain then the humans will bring you more humans who are suffering. It's like a restaurant where the waiter is so impressed by your ability to eat food they're giving you more on the house
They say things like "well, it's a real feast day for Belogarth today!" and "if my meds are held up at customs again I'm gonna put Belogarth in a food coma" and Belogarth is the one feeling weird about it
it rocks playing rpgs that arent dnd because you simply read the rules in the book and they explain the tools you have to move the narrative forward in a fun and satisfying fashion and you dont have to learn a secret real ruleset that exists as oral tradition
Basically. I got screwed.
I am very sorry for how relatively quiet this blog has been but I've been dealing with a very unpleasant situation the last few months, and now I need help.
Essentially, I tried to help someone out, and she took advantage of me, and I have no way to recoup my losses.
Earlier this year, I moved into a new house. Before we sold the old house, a Now-Former friend ran into some trouble and was about to become homeless with pets and a small child. Not wanting them to be on the street, we offered to hold off selling the old house so she could stay there for a little while, if she could pay the cost of the mortgage on that house (because I could afford one mortgage but not two) while we helped her find somewhere more permanent.
I was not making money from this- since I was still paying the utilities and property taxes, I was actually losing money, but willing to soak that in order to help her save up and get her on her feet.
Instead, she:
Never Paid a Dime towards covering the mortgage costs like she agreed ($12,000 for the nine months she was there)
Trashed the house ($500 dump fees for the trash alone)
Let her pets piss and shit all over the house ($1,500 bio hazard cleanup, $4000 to replace the carpet and other damaged flooring)
Caused an electrical issue in the garage ($900 to repair)
Broke the washer, dryer and refrigerator ($2500 to replace)
Broke the fence ($1000 to repair)
When I told her I could no longer financially support her and that I needed to sell the old house, she illegally squatted there for a solid three months and I had to hire a lawyer and actually take her to court to get her to leave ($2,500)
The resulting stress has been, as you can imagine, stressful.
So stressful, in fact, that it aggravated a the medical conditions my husband had and made him extremely sick. He had to go to the hospital and take time off work to recover. Now the health insurance is trying to weasel out of paying his short-term disability claim.
So net, this woman has managed to cost me around $25,000 and that's not taking into account the missed paychecks and medical expenses. I do not have $25,000, and until at least $13,000 of that is spent to repair the damage she did, I legally cannot sell the house to even begin to recoup my losses.
Theoretically, I could sue this woman, but she doesn't have any money and it would be me paying even more money I don't have to get... Nothing. So I'm asking for help to cover the costs of getting the old house ready to sell, my husband's medical expenses, and other expenses incurred by this debacle:
I tried to help out a now-former friend by letting her rent my house at cost, and she instead failed to pay any rent, trashed my house, and
If you can help out in any way-share, donate spare change, anything- I'd be extremely grateful.
Thank you.
I am, once again, in deep awe of you guys.
It's been less than 24 hours and the fundraiser is almost 3/4ths funded.
I do not have words for how relieved and grateful I am, except thank you. Thank you so much.

Muffin disclaimer
So you’ve ordered a muffin! We hope you’re up for a challenge.
Our wobbly tabby cat Bea REALLY likes muffins so there are a few things to be aware of if you have a muffin in the cat area.
- She WILL climb you to try and get your muffin - She is not very good at climbing so she will claw her way up your body - It WILL hurt - She WILL NOT give up - She may try to eat the muffin right out of your mouth - She is not allowed to eat muffins
You may pick her up / move her away if needed and if you’re really struggling, come and talk to us and we will help. No matter how much she wants to, it is still very important that you don’t let her eat any muffin as it will make her sick.
Good luck and we hope you enjoy your muffin experience!
She may look sweet and innocent but we promise you she’s not

TIL in 1896 a temporary, one-day city was named in Texas called Crush, where two locomotives were to be smashed head-on for purposes of spectacle. It was, for a few hours, the 2nd largest city in TX with 40k attendees. The collision caused engine boilers to explode, resulting in death and injuries.

Teleport is a Good and Useful Spell
The Wizard (named “Gold”): “I am very confident this teleport will work.”
The Party: “Okay, you’re gonna prepare multiple in case it doesn’t, right?”
Gold: “Yeah, yeah.”
The Magus: “Hey, Gold. As a fellow practitioner of the arcane, boat?”
Gold: “I have had enough of boats. This will be faster and fine.”
— time passes —
The Wizard: “Okay so we’re ready to go, yeah?”
The Party: “Send it.”
The Alchemist: “Roll a 100 [and thus fail the teleport]”
The Wizard: *rolls a 100*
The party is now in an unfamiliar environment, lost, confused, and terrified.
The Cleric: “So Gold. Please cast Teleport and get us-”
Gold: “I am going to be honest. I only prepared one Teleport.”
The entire party, in unison,
“GOLD.”
aaand they're tripling down. beyond ghoulish.
What's crazy is that this is actually a pretty significant rollback being staged as "we never did anything wrong". Their forums literally did say that things like charity installs and every single run of a game in WebGL would count! They said it would be a fee for reinstalls. They already clarified that this was as bad as they all feared. They only announced these "clarifications" after the reality was found that they were trying to see how much they were able to get away with.
This isn't a clarification. They are backing off. But they are holding on, desperately, to any semblance of the original plan.
The echoes of what we saw with WoTC changing the OGL is striking, and makes me think the same philosophy is driving this idea.
For those not in the know, Wizards, the company that own D&D, rolled out ironically draconian changes to their license that would make it so that anyone that published content using their system would get ridiculous royalty charges and gave them an unreasonable amount of ownership of any content you created. The RPG, notably, had consistently been getting tons of content from 3rd party publishers, and many have entire careers based off of using D&D as a platform. Everyone lost their shit over these changes, and Wizards doubled down for a few days, confirming time and time again that things were exactly as draconian as everyone feared. A bit later, Wizards said "uhhh here's what we actually mean" in a blog post, rolling back a ton of the worst changes, while claiming they were not changing anything at all.
YOU ARE HERE.
After that they released like 5 or something (based off memory) changes to what they said, trying to claim "everyone was winning actually" when they were actively losing things they wanted constantly. One of their major competitors announced a new, better standard during this time that a lot of those disaffected rallied behind. That same competitor got so much interest that they completely fucking ran out of core books. Homebrew publishers were leaving the game in droves. Hell, home games just fucking stopped playing the game entirely. They eventually had to just say "fuck it", completely ditch what they had planned, ditch the cozy position they had that benefitted them, and switch from the Open Gaming License (that gave them a lot of benefits) to just switching to Creative Commons. People still don't trust the company, and while its still the biggest name in town at the moment, everyone is eyeing other future plans they have with extreme suspicion... like the new Unity based virtual tabletop.
I don't know what philosophy is causing the exact same (thus far) sequence of events to play out (other than capitalism obvs but we can get more specific, surely). But we've seen where this goes. I doubt they'll be able to keep the new monetization strategy, they are already losing money. People don't trust anymore, and I can see that a lot of developers are dropping the engine. Unreal (and maybe Godot) are going to make some kind of wild, probably half baked, announcement that will directly benefit those most impacted, if I had to guess. And while they won't lose their majority recognition at this point, probably, they will be losing the trust.
I know my own projects will switch to Godot but its really interesting to see this same scene play out several times over and over. I'm not unique in saying this, but it seems we are finally reaching a point of capitalistic greed that even the average person can't stand it anymore. Here's hoping we see dramatic changes to how we approach sharing ideas soon.

I’m still shook, even now at 5am on a Thursday, over what I witnessed a few days ago in the Barnes & Noble Starbucks. Absolutely shook.
Two grown-ass men, obviously friends but dressed like they were in two different high school cliques, were arguing, passionately about who Gerard Way was. The one wearing a Green Lantern shirt and thick-rimmed hipster glasses said that Gerard Way is the lead singer of My Chemical Romance. The other guy was wearing what I wore during my emo phase in middle school, mostly black with a skinny red tie and a grey vest, was arguing that Gerard Way was a comic book writer.
Then a third person comes up, obviously another friend as she put down a tray of drinks for the three of them, looking like she could’ve been a Kappa Nu with Elle Woods, and asks “What dumb thing are you two arguing about now?”
The two men reply. Elle Woods’ sorority sister says “They’re the same damn person, you idiots. He does both things.”
Absolutely shook. I feel like I witnessed the utopia suggested by the end of High School Musical where everyone from all the different cliques are friends and Wildcats or some shit…

Here’s the thing about build guides that always get me: I like knowing what the strongest parts of a class are, but I often elect to self-nerf for flavor. And I really think that’s the way the game should be. Like, yeah, i want to be effective in combat and yeah I want my utility abilities to be good, but that’s not the end all be all of the game.
So what if it’s not as mechanically strong if I choose the warlock invocation that lets you detect magic at will? It’s flavorfully accurate.
And even situationally useful abilities are useful.
hi, past me. it’s future you here to tell you that we eventually found our way out of DnD and its clones to find games that scratch the itch of building a little guy who is flawed and wonderful much better. we had some great times with DnD and we can remember it fondly for having introduced us to this amazing hobby and a community of gamers and designers who are fantastic. we can also be critical of what it lacks and what games fill that lack for us.
there’s some fun years ahead.
