A/n: Oooo I love this! This is based off of mystreet Zane and my inner demons rhys instead of the smp versions of them.

Zane slammed the apartment door closed hard enough for it to rattle in the frame. Rhys didn’t flinch. He stood in the kitchen, arms crossed, glasses sliding a little down his nose as he glared toward the entrance, taking in the appearance of his angry lover. Zanes black hair was a mess, slightly damp from the rain, his clothes were soaked and slightly muddy. His shoes tracking the mud into their apartment. Zane icy blue eyes were bloodshot red highlighted by the deep black circles under them. "How long has it been since you slept?" Rhys muttered calmly.
Zane froze just inside the doorway, shoulders stiff beneath his hoodie. His mask, as always, covered half his face, but Rhys could see the tiredness in the one exposed eye. “Wow. Not even a 'hey, welcome home?’”
"You ignored my calls. For hours," Rhys said tightly. "You promised you wouldn’t do that again.”
Zane yanked his damp hood off his head. “I got caught up. I didn’t feel like talking.”
“You went back to that place, didn’t you?” Rhys’s voice raised slightly. “The old park. The one your brother used to take you.”
Zane’s jaw clenched.
“You said you weren’t going there alone anymore, Zane—”
“I needed space!” Zane snapped.
Rhys stepped forward, trying to keep his voice calm, but there was an edge to it now. “So you needed to vanish without a word? After everything we talked about last time? You swore—”
“I didn’t ask you to care!” Zane barked. “I didn’t ask for you to check in on me like I’m some kind of broken project—”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
Zane flinched. The silence between them turned razor-sharp.
“I’m not trying to control you,” Rhys muttered, his voice quieter now. “I just... I know that place messes with your head. And when you don’t sleep, don’t eat, disappear on me—how am I supposed to react?” Rhys voice cracks as he whispers.
Zane turned away. “You’re supposed to let me crash. Burn out. Whatever.”
Rhys took a step closer. “Love.. how long has it been since you slept?”
The silence that followed felt heavy on the two lovers.
“…Three days,” Zane muttered.
“Zane.”
“I couldn’t. Every time I close my eyes I see him. I hear what he said.” Zane’s voice cracked. “It’s like I’m still there. Still hearing that I’m not.. that I'll never be enough.”
Rhys’s expression softened, the anger draining into something softer.
“You are enough,” he said, walking up to him. “And you’re not alone in this, even if it feels like it.”
Zane didn’t speak, just stood there, shaking slightly from both emptions and the cold wetness of his clothes. Rhys reached out, brushing his fingers against Zane’s.
“Come here.”
Zane resisted for half a second, then finally let himself be pulled forward, into Rhys’s arms, his masked face pressing against Rhys’s chest.
“I’m sorry I snapped,” Zane whispered. “I’m just...scared” he mumbles softly into his lovers chest.
Rhys held him tighter, his larger hands rubbing his lovers vback softlyto soothe him. “Me too, love. But we’re here. We’re in this. Together.”
Zane melted against him, letting the fight fade into silence, letting the warmth of rhys take its place. Rhys eventually coxed them over to the couch where they ended curled up on. A blanket draped over them and Zane’s head tucked under Rhys’s chin. Rhys kept his arms tightly wrapped against his smaller lover.
“I’m still mad,” Rhys murmured into zanes hair, a slight teasing tone evident in his voice.
Zane sleepily mumbled something unaudible into Rhys’ neck. It sounded halfway like an apology and halfway of a laugh. Rhys watched as his lovers eyes fluttered closed for the first time in days. He presses a soft kiss against zanes forehead, "apology accepted."

Oh man, well at least there’s no way to avoid the paywalls for papers on scientific literature that can make scientific papers inaccessible to the people who wrote them. At least all the publishers get to horde that knowledge
