迷子のネコに爪とぎをプレゼント!!【猫生初】
imagine if Lawmeli's homily post-Conclave is like: glad to see so many of you embracing therapy... a few of you need an exorcism as well but... baby steps 🫶
??? what is my YT feed doing? ((electronic dance music))???
Forgive me father for I have sinned
I was thinking: Since Robert Harris interviewed actual cardinals at the Vatican, it's kind of funny to imagine what was going through his mind while talking to and being so well treated by them. I can just picture him giggling like a little girl on the inside: 'Hee hee, they don't know I'm going to throw in a wildly controversial twist at the end. That they, and every catholic ever will probably hate and concider heretic 🤭🤭🤭'
I’m not sure if Harris ever talked about this, but I wonder when and why he came up with the twist. While reading, i kinda felt like the original idea was that Benitez was actually secretly a woman, (that’s where that line 'I was born in a place where boys were more praised than girls' might have originally come from, which there's no reason for him to him say that if his parents truly believed he was biologically male) and the original message was 'Why can't a woman be the Pope?' But for some reason, he changed it at the last minute.
~
1.) I would like to be the fly on the wall when Harris discussed that ending with his publisher and agent, LOL, like, aye, we’re doing intersex pope ending? Aye. Like??? 😭👌
2.) Is he inspired by someone? Is a clergyman or seven are secretly intersex in the Vatican?
Totally about Lomeli being bi, the context is undeniably sexual. I do agree it's a bit stacked on, but also is the intersexual pope in the last pages. Yeah there were hints but you could say the hints about Benítez are also the hints about Lomeli being bisexual. There's a sensual verve in describing him. I understand this is subjective but I don't mean anything explicitly by it, it's just that the narrative voice calls attention to some character's physical attractiveness, in a way that puts Lomeli in evidence. Put side by side how Lomeli sees Vincent vs Agnes and it hits pretty the same (youthful body vs indomitable blue eyes). He's just more explicit with Agnes because she's a woman, but in the innuendo, I think Vincent hits hornier. Actually I posted that section where he wonders about Benítez' ink like hair in my status and a guy friend asked me if I was reading a fanfic lol. And this also happens with Adeyemi (the cologne, the breath on his neck..., this is chapter one). And it's not a writer's tic, other characters don't get this treatment (Tremblay doesn't, Tedesco is described unappealing). The author is trying to say something, and he's not spelling it out, but he also doesn't want to leave it implied, but also the elderly cardinal is not gonna call himself bisexual. How else is a character this religious going to say such a thing? This novel is definitely not perfect xd but it makes sense that Lomeli is bisexual, it both enhances the themes of the book and it makes easier to portray and at the same time ignore the hints about Benítez... And also it's hot.
~
In the book, Lomeli explicitly states that he has "desired and been desired" by men and women. It's canon that he's bisexual, and I couldn't agree with Anon's take more about the way Lomeli describes Benitez in his narration. He uses very poetic language to describe Benitez. "hair spilling like black ink across his forehead" "youthful" "trim" "yoga by candlelight" "There was something attractive about the Filipino" (I'm slightly paraphrasing all of these because I don't have as copy of the book handy). What is also telling is when Bentiez tells Lomeli he voted for him, he says it "shyly". Saying you voted for another man "shyly" is fanfic coded AS FUCK. Did he also bat his lashes at Lomeli? Did two spots of color appear high on his cheekbones? (Speaking of cheekbones, Lomeli also notices Bentiez's cheekbones. the man is in love).
A reminder that Lawmeli’s almost immediate description of Benítez was “fine, handsome face”.
father, don’t get me wrong, i am here for “thomas as innocent’s wife” just as much as the next sinner, but i am craving some good “thomas as the devoted husband he never had a chance to be” content, like, he is So Good at managing, at supervising, at caring, and now suddenly he gets to do that for Innocent - he gets to set boundaries around him, and protect him, and provide for him, and adore him, and i just think there’s some unexplored possibilities here, you feel me????

no one had told me about René Casados playing Padre Tadeo??
can i headcanon him as Vincent Benítez's peer as he is also Mexican?
I wanted to draw a whole bunch of them

Shots before the first appearance of Vincent Benítez and after the last appearance of him. (Conclave, 2024, dir. Edward Berger)
Innocent‘s first ride in the Popemobile!!!!
Ray's giggle in front of Lawmeli when Vincent arrived tho
'I know exactly what this is about: you’re going to tell me we’ve lost a cardinal.’ ‘On the contrary, Dean, we appear to have acquired one.’ The Irishman gave a nervous giggle. ‘Is that meant to be a joke?’ ‘No, Eminence.’ O’Malley became sombre. ‘I mean it literally: another cardinal has just turned up.'
i'm sobbing over the way Lawmeli clocked Vincent again in the first ballot
“And then there was Benítez, of whom Lomeli had lost track since the previous night. One could at least be certain that he would not be voting for himself. The choir dress that had been found for him was too long. His rochet hung almost to the ground and he nearly tripped over it as he reached the altar. When he had finished voting and turned to go back to his seat, he gave Lomeli a wry glance. Lomeli nodded and smiled encouragement in return. The Filipino had an attractive quality, he thought, not easy to define: an inner grace. Now that he was becoming better known, he might go far.”
Professor AU hehe👀
The only reason why transphobes always ask “what is a woman” instead of “what is a man” is because we all know that a man is a featherless biped.
It’s 2023, women can have as many legs and feathers as they want- get with the times.
Behold! A woman!
