groove billed anis are a hilarious cuckoo situation where they ended up laying their eggs in one another’s nests instead of anyone else’s. they hang out together in groups of up to five pairs until a nest gets built (sometimes by committee, sometimes they just hang around hopefully until someone does it all on their own) then they start sneaking over and laying an egg in at a time. the females who lay for the first time will sometimes flip prior eggs out of the nest like ‘oh i KNOW this one isn’t mine! away it goes’ but eventually everyone’s laid a couple eggs in there and is stuck with the mutual hostage situation. then they take turns incubating until all the kids hatch and everyone pitches in on feeding them, because no one knows which of the kids are theirs so they all might as well.

they also like to do a team handshake where they clump up and mutually make a low bubbling noise together, to signal group affiliation. go team!

Tips for Writing Injuries

✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.

✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.

✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.

✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.

✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.

✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.

✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.

✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.

✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.

✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.

It was only raw lust at her nun fit in the start because I am superficial and a walking ulterior motive, but I have to say The Masses' Travels absolutely sold me on Archetto/Hildegard.

It's that damn scene, man, it's that damn scene where she pours her entire heart out about her joyful memories, the good, the bad, the easy, the hard, the sweet, the bitter, about Laterano, about busting her ass off and breaking her back for Landon Monastery, and generally, for Laterano, her life's work dedicated to bettering the monastery, and those it aids, reminiscing about all the good times with the sisters, with the abbot, the little games and pranks, the outings, the efforts, the sacrifices, the successes, all of it, not just the monastery, but of Laterano itself, the best places to eat, the best sights to see, and the wonderful people she's met and loved, be they Sankta, Liberi, or anything else.

Hildegard then asks if that all is invalidated just because she has no halo, simply because she has no halo. She asks if she is not a real Lateran despite all of that, pouring her whole bleeding and beating heart out, simply because this is a binary of halo or no halo? Is she not a real Lateran?

And the Nurturer simply answers, with all the grace of a crude shiv between the ribs, no, you aren't. You aren't a real Lateran. You simply aren't and you will never be unless you are given a halo.

I cannot tell you the raw anger that evoked in me as a reader and human being in a catholic country where I have seen the very same scene play out far too many times for comfort. I am privileged with a halo, let's say. I've seen far too many people be written off, othered, because they weren't born with one. It made me want to cry, my eyes were legitimately burning reading that. It unbottled all that anger I thought I had already resolved and come to terms with. No, it turns out, this still burns a bit too bright, that hypocrisy makes me want to burn at least one of the numerous gilded churches you can find every three streets around here.

Beyond that, holy shit, kudos, because Archetto was a character that was an absolute nobody in my radar until this event and now I've done a 540, she's got shooters and I am as many of them as she needs me to be.

My favorite part of The Masses' Travels is that the plot twist of the Laterano arc is that there is no plot twist.

Throughout years, it's been less subtext and more text that Laterano is a thoroughly messed up ethnostate commandeered by a supercomputer. Any reader will then think, ok, this is being presented very explicitly, Laterano is a messed up ethnostate, right, that's a brick in the overall house, though, there's still The Big Reveal, it stands to reason there has to be a Big Reveal because of how blatantly this is being presented to us. Maybe a deeper reason, a kernel of Laterano being an ethnostate actually being a good thing and the right decision, some sort of misunderstanding, something.

The you get to The Masses' Travels and the big plot twist is that there is absolutely no plot twist, no bells and whistles, Laterano is actually a huge messed up ethnostate, no ifs and buts and considerations, it actually simply is, it's not a brick, it's the whole house with a big billboard outside that says "RACISM" with a halo on top.

And the entire theme of dreaming, child-rearing, and awakening is as subtle as a boxer's liver hook: These absolute idiots had their Racism One Drive reset and now they need to talk to each other -- and everyone -- with words. No more sending vibes, we have big boy words and we are going to use them.

There are writers that use subtlety and they are cowards. Sometimes the ethnostate is an ethnostate and that's the whole shebang.

Mind you, there's obviously more to it: The legitimate, sincere affection any Lateran can and does have towards others that aren't halopilled, but with an internalized and unavoidable veneer of self-aggrandizing pity. That is very much a catholic thing! One of it's most important traditions, in fact!

And for us, the reader, it's doubly hilarious when you consider that this is something that absolutely can be avoided: Ambriel can socialize perfectly well and is known as very approachable despite how capricious she is, Adnachiel learned to socialize pretty well and now has squadmates he's ride and die for, and vice versa, Exusiai is extremely sociable and has a very easy time making friends, even when she's been referred to as a textbook Lateran... The whole ethnostate thing, the self-aggrandizing pity, the othering, it's all social. It's all social. Yes, very much assisted by the Racism One Drive and the supercomputer, but ultimately entirely a social construct. Because the idea of an ethnostate is wholly entirely stupid for anyone who's not drowning in the kool aid and thinks about it for three seconds. Federico takes one look at it and says "this is dumb". Arturia takes one look at it and outright just walks out. I see a lot of people saying this is because Federico's turbo autism makes him engage with the machine as a machine instead of as a god, and I hear you, but I think personally this is far more simple: Federico is well traveled and has spent enough time in Rhodes Island -- and just outside in general -- that he can simply recognize Laterano is stupid as hell because it is stupid as hell, Arturia is also extremely well traveled and has seen frankly more impressive beings than the machine -- the Witch King, for example, in the Demonverse Arcane Pocket Dimension of Eternal Torment -- that aren't anywhere near as stupid as it and even then also were entirely composed of wrong awful ideas -- like the Witch King -- so she simply logs off.

And then you realize that very early in the game, we're told Laterano is an ethnostate, and what do you know, six years later, Laterano is in fact an ethnostate. Full marks.

The curtains couldn't have been more blue in this case. It's cool when the curtains being blue means something, for real. But sometimes the curtains being blue because they are blue is all they need be.
