me and @cumdumpstiel went through to try and find all the references to sex and sexual violence (which was hard! there was honestly some stuff we didn't include because it didn't translate well to the page because it was mark sheppard/rachel miner/mitch pileggi/somebody else giving an otherwise normal line unfathomably bad vibes) but in doing that i realized i need to also go through this episode and find all the really visceral non-sexual references to like torture and violation of bodies because like this is only half the story. some of my favorite moments like that include:

meg's demon buddies being ripped apart by hell hounds, sam biting into his arm to draw that devil's trap, meg lying on the floor wildly slashing at hell hounds with an angel blade, demons trying to feed dean to ghouls, this moment where dean and meg reminisce a little about alastair, dean being imprisoned in a pee-soaked cell, the entire concept of crowley torturing himself, and this line:

pissing myself off thinking about how abaddon could have been good

i was reading this fic and it really got me thinking about what if abaddon was good.

i'm always saying that devil may care is kind of a blueprint for what season nine could have been: kevin is a real part of team free will, and he's growing into quite the dirt bag. we're taking demon politics seriously and paying attention to them. but most importantly this speech is the closest abaddon ever gets to seeming like a real threat. this makes her a personal danger and it makes her dean's personal villain. she's succeeding at being kind of scary here.

but there is a fundamental flaw. which is that dean should have said yes. when abaddon said have you ever felt an infant's blood drip down your chin, or listened to a girl scream as you rip her guts out? dean should have said yes.

look, this is dean. dean, alastair's best torturer. the guy who liked it better in purgatory than on earth because it was just pure violence. "what i'm good at is slicing throats." later this season, dean is gonna take the mark of cain. it's going to turn him into a knight of hell - just like abaddon. she should be functioning as a kind of shadow-self here.

and she... kind of is, but there's something missing. which is the acknowledgement that well. abaddon is evil, but there's something evil in dean too. something he is ashamed of, maybe afraid of, but it exists. there is something inside dean similar to abaddon, something that is a product of hell, or just a part of himself that fit in a little too well there. i want you to compare this scene, the haunted look in dean's eyes when dean says "yeah, she can." the haunted look that means i can, too, and i didn't come by it honestly. i want that vibe here.

of course in the rest of the season abaddon is mostly crowley's villain, which fails pretty badly since the show really has no idea what to do with crowley in season nine. crowley himself manages to still be fun because crowley is already a well laid out and developed character and more importantly mark sheppard is a great and charming actor. abaddon, unfortunately, has neither of these advantages, and ends up a pretty nothing villain because of it.

like the thing is abaddon could have been doing an amara thing but eviller and dropping the "romance" element of it entirely. let that sit in subtext. if she'd been dean's villain, if part of the threat of season nine was that she wants to wear dean's skin. and a tiny part of dean wants to let her. well.
