rapture theory: the current concept of the rapture was propaganda and the "rapture" is actually a much longer period of mysterious disappearances that are never investigated and such. this will align with some sort of "holy war" (which is currently being instigated by the US government) where suddenly these people will reappear on the "winning" side, possibly claiming to bring an era of peace
these people will more overtly take over governments, schools, hospitals, etc. and claim to be better while being even more exploitative than before...
because they originally exploited children and marginalized communities anyway and don't really care who they hurt if it gets them more power and money

I finally got my graphic novel in the mail but I drew this awhile back :^)
[ID] A full color digital drawing of Taako and Lup, smiling mischievously and holding hands. They are slender twin elves with brown skin. Taako is on the left. He has shoulder length blue hair and is wearing a blue blouse with a white long sleeve shirt underneath, dark blue pants, and a large blue wizard hat with a matching bow. He has a hand on his hip and is glancing over at Lup. Lup has short blonde hair and is wearing a sparkly red poncho over a dark red bodysuit and flats. She’s also smiling with a hand on her hip. The background is yellow with white stars. [end ID]

You cannot hide this in the tags, bestie. This is too lovely to keep a secret.
Theodor would approve.
A recurring thought I have had about TAZ Balance that I have been ass at trying to articulate, but that I feel like has something to it, is a way that yes, it's a story about the power of bonds and connectedness, it's about how love and bonds and reliance on others end up saving the world... and yet. You know what one of the most crucial lines in the finale is?
"Break the bonds, Merle."
It's what John tries to reveal about how to defeat the Hunger. It's the hint that Lucretia's barrier will have a use, a fundamentally necessary one. Because the Hunger, just as much as the heroes, is also empowered by bonds — but not healthy ones. The Hunger is made of literal billions of people all validating and encouraging each other's despair, all feeding into each other's belief that existence is agonizing. It's like a toxic, mutually destructive friendship on steroids. The Hunger is about how bonds aren't always a universally positive thing, how bonds aren't always a source of salvation. It's about some bonds needing to be severed for anyone involved to ever heal or thrive again. It contextualizes the final battle in Balance as being bonds at their best (Tres Horny Boys, backed by all their friends) versus the Hunger, the embodiment of bonds at their worst, and in the end, the thematic result is a story that depicts bonds and love and connection as a much more neutral force than I think a lot of people (formerly myself) have given it credit for! Which is not remotely incompatible with it being a story about love saving the world, a thing I love about Balance because of the variety of types of love depicted! But I just think the nuance is so underdiscussed and neat.
