Studying sustainability has taught me that the answer to things like âis it better to use paper or plastic bags?â always ends up being something like âwe would need to perform an extremely in depth study on the entire life cycle of both types of bags from virgin material collection to product recollection, compare things like amount of product each type of bag can carry, material usage per bag, how frequently double-bagging is occurring, and take into account a ridiculous number of factors down to the fuel efficiency of the trucks that transport them and even after all that we would have to try to find a way to compare whether the higher carbon emissions of producing and transporting paper bags is better than the fact that the plastic bags will be plastic bags for the next thousand years. And at the end of the day all this research would ultimately not be particularly useful because our waste collection streams in the US are so fucking bad itâs depressing.â
And then someone will ask about reusable bags and youâd have to do the study again only to reveal that you need to use the reusable bag like a couple thousand times to offset the carbon emissions it takes to make the reusable bag and make it worth it over disposable bags and thatâs not taking into consideration bags breaking before then or being forgotten about completely.
The answer always leads to âitâs incredibly complicated but our current practices are so terrible we would need a full scale restructuring of our economy and practices to such a degree that can literally never happen because our government is lobbied by the people who make money off of said unsustainable practices.â
So the answer to âpaper bags or plastic bags?â is that we need to destroy capitalism
When you look at things from a systems perspective, you find cruft - old inefficiencies based on bad science or limited data or assumptions that are no longer true.
âPaper or plasticâ elides the real questions, like:
Why do I have to own a car to drive to a big grocery store?
Why canât I live in walking distance to a small grocery store?
Why canât we all use cargo bikes?
Why am I behind the wheel of a large automobile?
How do I work this?
Is this my beautiful house?
Is this my beautiful wife?
Would I be better off living in a shotgun shack?
Am I right, or am I wrong?
My God, what have I done?

This is.... Absurdly cute. What the fuck.
It's worth noting that the reason the beaver wants the water to be deeper in the first place is that the Beaver is using the deep water as a pantry:
All summer and fall, beavers gather up branches with the leaves they actually eat, and store it in the deep end of the Pond, where the cold water and limited oxygen keep the leaves fresh all winter, so when it's negative 20 outside, a beaver can take a dip out of it's lodge, grab some refrigerated leaves in the (relatively) warmer water and go back to it's cozy little nap hole while everything else is out there suffering and eating bark or the like.
So it's less "there's a leak in my house" and more "OH SHIT THE FRIDGE!!"
