The way Buck and Eddie would be the cutest but most insufferable couple ever. They are that couple in line at the grocery store all cuddled up in their own world. In fact 5 people have cut in front of them because they aren't paying attention. It wouldn't be a problem except they were holding the line for Ravi. He got the wrong brand of diapers and he wasn't going to have May mad at him so he asked them to hold his spot. He comes back and is all I can't believe you guys. Buck breaks away from Eddie and is all sorry you know how the honeymoon phase is. Ravi pushes them out of the way muttering it can't be a honeymoon phase five years after you got married.

ok yes but they are also, CANONICALLY, the couple in the grocery checkout line loudly arguing and holding everyone else up. and then you go outside with your groceries and they are making out up against their car, cart blocking your path to your own car

not enough talk about how competitive those dorks would get about being romantic. Buck setting a secret vibrate only alarm for 5am, and sleeping with his phone under his head so that he can make Eddie breakfast in bed on their one-week anniversary, just for him to wake up to an empty bed and Eddie in the kitchen with a full breakfast spread and ginormous flowers and a wink that says "Eddie - 1, Buck - 0". Eddie going to Chimney to ask to switch laundry duty with Buck, because he knows Buck hates it, just to find out Buck already switched to laundry to get Eddie out of mopping the floor. Buck and Eddie having to run their surprise vacation plans through Maddie and Ravi to make sure the other hasn't booked a surprise for the same weekend off. Both of them saying they're going for a run just to bump into each other in the grocery store checkout line and acting like they caught the other cheating, but really Buck was buying Eddie a bunch of the expensive baked goods ingredients that he knows Eddie likes and Eddie is buying a whole assortment of fruits for Buck that he planned on peeling and prepping for him. Both of them accidentally joining the same flash mob to surprise the other (Eddie saw it on facebook as an event called "Old Time Rock and Roll Flash Mob!", Buck found out through Hen, who thought it would be funny if they both went after she sees Eddie's comments on the event page). Buck sabotaging Eddie's proposal because he sniffed out what was up, but he already has a plan and a ring of his own. them polling the entire firehouse about who they think loves the other more, complete with propaganda and Ravi threatening to quit. Both spending 10k on the other the next time an auction happens. getting erotically competitive about how many of the heavy boxes they can carry for the other when they move in together.

i finally watched the paper on peacock and while i enjoyed it (and particularly just really love the concept of a small local newspaper trying to return to reporting the news) there was something so....idk....indistinct feeling about the characters. and i think part of it is just that the season was only 10 episodes and it can take quite a while for sitcom characters/actors to really settle into their roles. certainly many of the excellent characters in the office, parks and rec, superstore, abbott elementary, new girl etc. take a season or more to really feel distinct and lived-in. 10 episodes just isn't enough time for the characters and their dynamics to breathe and blossom. the only characters who felt fully embodied to me were Esmeralda, who felt fully embodied only inasmuch as she was completely over-the-top at all times for better or for worse, and Travis, who is a fairly minor character, but i found his performance to be just kind of quietly comedically undeniable.

The rest of the characters I just wanted more of. And the main two--and their romance--never fully landed for me because I didn't feel like I really knew enough about either of them, or felt like their character traits were drawn distinctly enough. And it's just like. this is why you can't really DO a sitcom season in 10 episodes! The characters, the actors who play them, and the writers need time to explore those character dynamics, learn what works and what doesn't, and write for their strengths are as comedic actors.

anyway. i get why everyone who watched it when it first aired was like. eh. it's okay. because that's kind of how i felt watching it. i enjoyed myself and it was a good filler show, but i came away just feeling sort of middling about it.
