CH 10 BBG
It was really helpful that the information was so concise and I loved how short it was. The information was fairly relevant but the checklists were less relevant to our projects.
Reflecting on Chapter 10 (BBG)
The title of chapter ten “Assembling a Multigenre Project” lets us know that the content of the chapter is going to directly pertain to what we’re doing in class right now. Project three is a multigenre project, and so a chapter that talks about how to assemble on is pretty helpful. Once again, The Bedford Book of Genres reminds us of the importance of our rhetorical situations, and reminds us to use the rhetorical appeals to our advantage.
The chapter then goes on to provide us with the steps to assembling a multigenre project. The “introduce your project and provide context” point should be helpful when we write our rationales for our various campaigns since we need to talk about the choices we made in each genre and analyze our pieces rhetorically. The chapter also recommends creating an author’s or artist’s statement for each genre, but I’m not sure if we need to do that for this class or if it’s just something to consider.
Unsurprisingly, chapter nine also includes a guided reading section that provides examples of multigenre projects. While these projects seem a little bigger than what we’re working on, I still think the information and examples are useful.
I agree that the information in this chapter was pretty helpful, and very relevant to what we are doing with project three! The examples, although they were based on bigger projects, were still pretty helpful to me.
I thought the general information provided was fairly useful, but I thought the checklists were a little less than helpful for what we are doing... But hey, the reading was so short that I’ll overlook it xD
Chapter 10 Response
This is the last tumblr post! See ya, tumblr! It was nice knowing you but I think I’ll be fine without you! On a less happy note, like most of my classmates, I’m getting extremely worried about project 3. Unlike most people, I have failed to get most of my project out of the first phase (i.e. just my mind). However, I have been extremely successful at procrastinating and binge watching Daredevil (Oops...). The reading did provide some sort of relief because it provided lots of relevant information for the project. Unfortunately, some of the information was redundant based on the other readings that we have done as well as class discussion. But hey, the reading was really short so I’ll be willing to forgive the reading this time. It provided lots of information on the rhetorical situations and conventions of different genres. The reading stressed that it is important for an author to reach their intended audience, like you wouldn’t give a paper about how great FSU is to a UF student who wouldn’t be able to appreciate it and how awesome FSU is. The different steps that the reading provided were a little less than helpful but I get their point. Well, I guess I better go get my project going... Good luck to anyone else.
Nov 17th Readings
The layout of the readings themselves was really nice and understandable, and the information they gave on layouts for different genres will be very helpful for our project. This project isn’t just a writing assignment, and we all be unique in what we choose to do for our genres.
I, like you, found these readings to be super helpful for project three and found the layout to be easy to read and understandable. Overall not too bad of readings.
This was a much better read. There was a lot of information that I think we can all apply to our upcoming projects, I just need to get started at this point. This project gives us so much freedom and it’s helpful to have these readings point us in the right direction.
Design Reading Reflection
Although I have only just started the process of creating project three, I am already planning on the design process taking up a majority of my time on it. Creating something the follows a logical format and is visually appealing to its reader is what determines the success of a piece whether it is conventional artwork or writing.
While project three is a compilation of several different genres, it’s also very much a project based on our ability to present our ideas successfully. The readings provided lots of information, some of it helpful and some of it intuitive, that can be used to strengthen the presentation of our three pieces. The reading on page layouts was particularly helpful in explaining how to present material in a manageable way for readers. Most of the tips here are things that we already do as writers such as choosing appropriate fonts, arranging words based on their relevance, revising our work, etc. The reading on color scheme was also quite helpful. Project three is the first time that we’ve been allowed to really utilized different color schemes to evoke different emotions with readers. Understanding how to go about it effectively will be to our benefit not just in this class but in other situations in our futures.
Each of these readings discusses elements of effective design layouts and how to best present our work. I think that most of us go about the process instinctually. If we see something that looks awkward to us, we change it or adjust it in someway to make it more visually appealing. For me personally the hardest part in this is knowing how to use the tools provided to achieve a more successful design layout. I’m not tech-savvy or artistic so creating anything digitally has always been a challenge for me. I understand when something looks awkward or needs to maybe be adjusted but knowing how to is the problem and is another concern of mine moving forward in project three. These readings don’t teach you how to change that unfortunately.
I’m glad to hear you’re not way ahead of me in this project and you’re still planning yours. It sounds like you’re really focused and doing a great job planning! I bet your project is going to be great!
At least I’m not the only one still in the planning project! these readings were helpful in that it helped me move further along in the project! You can do this!
I though the readings gave me a little more to consider when designing my web article (and a little more to stress over unfortunately), but it also gave a lot of really good suggestions. I’m relieved to not be the only procrastinator in class! Good luck!
November 17th Reading Reflection
Three readings? I don’t think I can go on... Oh hey wait, they were actually pretty good. These readings were a nice change up from the old Bedford Book of Genres. Not only that but it was about visual media and design. Quite interesting actually. I’m personally looking into doing a web article or a poster for one of my elements and this reading provided me with a lot of useful information. It’s important to know what will grab a person’s eye and what won’t. Based on this aspect, the reading provided helpful information about color schemes, the use of photos, and making use of white space. I’m partial to a minimalist design on websites, I think it looks cleaner and more modern, which is what I will be going for on my website or even a poster. Anything too busy can distract one’s eye and keep the reader from truly understanding your point. I especially enjoyed the part of the reading about font styles. Especially now, with an endless list of font types, it hard to decide what looks better on a website or poster. On top of that, one has to make sure the font matches the overall theme of the website or else it can look out of place or weird. If it hadn’t been for the reading’s suggestions I would have been scouring an endless list of fonts to find the perfect one. Overall, I thought the reading was interesting and it has given me a few more things to consider for my pieces.
WITD 11/10
I might be the only one that didn’t write about puppies…. but Quest Bars are cool too.
This appears to be mostly persuasive, yet it is also informative because it provides facts in a motivating light which causes one to feel that this bar is better than any other protein bar. The purpose of this blog is to try and get the audience to buy Quest bars through the use of several facts that present the bar in a positive light while putting other protein bars down. The most prominent rhetorical appeal would be logos because the post provide lots of facts about the Quest bar. Pathos is also used to persuade the reader, and ethos is used because the writer seems to be knowledgeable of the Quest bar and other protein bars. The writer presents one of the facts, then presents how this fact benefits the consumer, then how competing bars do not offer these benefits. It is strategic and effective at accomplishing the goal of the blog. The tone of the blog is positive and gives one the feeling that they have been informed properly. The language and positive tone establish the post as a trustworthy source. The style is informal and very enjoyable to read.
Pond Pools: An Innovative Way to Cool Off
Natural Pools, more commonly known as pool ponds, are new efficient pools that one can have in their backyard. Unlike traditional pools, these natural pools are low maintenance and environmentally friendly. These pools allow one to create a natural spring feel in the comfort of their own home.
These pools are as clean and healthy as any other type of pool. Instead of using chemicals, such as chlorine, like traditional pools, these pond pools rely instead on the water purification process found in nature. The water is circulated through a biological filter which consists mainly of wild grass. The wild grassroots trap large particles and other debris while a UV sterilizer harnesses the power of ultraviolet waves to kill off any type of bacteria or algae that may naturally occur. Then the crystal clear water cascades out of a waterfall that aerates the water creating cool, beautiful water.
Bedford Book of Genres Ch. 9 Reflection
The Bedford Book of Genres “Revising & Remixing Your Work” was another relevant checkpoint on the seemingly endless list of readings. Pertinent? Perhaps. Necessary? Not necessarily. Arguably, I could have done without it given that I have already gathered all of its core information naturally over the years by simply being in English composition classes. Although a lesson about working through the peer review process is relevant it is not necessary. I think, for the most part, we all know how to give and take constructive criticism, and this far into the semester, it seems like common sense. Where the ninth chapter takes a turn for the better is with the “Remixing Your Work Into Different Genres” section; it covers exactly the waters that I have never before treaded. Even after developing by Project Three proposal, it seemed that the waters were unnavigable and too murky to muddle through sans past experience to use as a guide. Luckily, the latter half of Chapter Nine comes in to save the day, it covers exactly what we are tasked with doing— maybe not in the greatest detail, but with just enough content to make me more comfortable than before. I learned it was done before by the likes of Martha Stewart, and it could be done again by me.
Though this reading may have been a bit redundant, I think it is important to stress the significance of the revision process as well as peer revision. It is always helpful to get a new perspective on a paper and I think it will come in handy with project 3.
Ch. 9 Reflection
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the BBG had a short-ish chapter that we were finally able to read. Chapter 9 was all about revising your work and the importance of revising and editing a piece that you have worked on after peer review and observations have been done. I feel that revising after peer review is one of the most important steps of the writing process because it allows a set of new ideas and a brain full of new ideas to look over your paper and comment on ways to improve it. Revisions after this stage can make or break a paper because it’s when the writer learns if his or paper makes sense. If his or her paper gets the point across. If the reader can tell it’s written in the correct genre. College English classes have shown me the importance of having another person read over my paper and edit it before I write and turn in my final draft. This chapter was a good reminder of that, and it also gave several examples of great questions to ask the person who is peer reviewing your paper. I don’t think peer review will be used very much in project 3 because it’s more of a working project unlike a research paper, but I still enjoyed reading this chapter.
I also love having my compositions peer reviewed! It provides a whole new, unbiased perspective. It makes it much easier to revise since I would probably reach the point of “Wow, my paper sounds great to me!” if I were to review my own work all of the time!
I strongly agree that the revision process is key to the success of any paper. Nobody writes a perfect paper on their first go, heck it takes me like three tries to get an adequate paper. I also couldn’t agree more with your beliefs about peer review, however I think it will have an important role in our next project.
Chapter 9 Response
If you had told me 5 weeks ago that we would have a reading from the Bedford Book of Genres that was less than 50 pages, nonetheless only 20 pages, I would have assumed that the you were merely crazy. Needless to say that I was quite relieved that this reading was pleasantly short.
This chapter was all about the revision process, which in my opinion, is where the bulk of the writing, and the challenges that accompany it, manifests themselves. The book stressed the importance of peer review and the benefits it can have on one’s paper and I could not agree more. Peer review is significant because it allows one to gauge how well they are getting their ideas across to the audience at an early stage. Peer review also provides the writer with a new perspective on the paper and the reviewer may suggest a way for the writer to continue to explore the topic. I know this has definitely helped me out in these past assignments (thanks peer group and Ms. B!). Though this new project may not lend itself to peer revision necessarily, at least in the formal way that we have been using, I definitely plan to use my friends as a resource to make sure my point is still coming across. I may call upon you, my friends to help me. Will you answer the call?
Media Studies Response
So I’m starting to get more and more stressed out about this project. I think I’m most worried about having to gauge people’s reactions to my different medias. However, I think the reading this week, though a bit painful to read, was helpful with my problem. The reading broke down and discussed different types of media and how they are use, etc. It provided a lot of detail, some of which wasn’t necessary, but overall it was helpful given the upcoming project. The study of media is broken down into three categories: Production, Distribution, and Exhibition. This is good for me and my desire to be in the filmmaking industry because there are some clear similarities between this process and the filmmaking process (but that’s really besides the point.) Back to my worry though, the distribution and examination of people's response to my new media types. This is due to the fact that I'm a little socially awkward so it will be difficult for me to talk to them about my project. I think my solution to this will be to use media over the internet, such as an informal article or something. I'll figure it out I guess, but best of luck to everyone else!
Narrative Genres
I think after writing so strictly about formal informative topics, most of us are excited for the opportunity to write about something more personal. Maybe we’re all a little apprehensive too, because project 3 is shaping up to be much tougher than what we originally thought it would be. Chapter 2 in BBG was aimed to make our lives a little bit easier and discuss more thoroughly the way less formal narrative genre.
To be honest, I didn’t find this chapter very helpful at all. I mean we kind of create our own narratives and share our personal experiences every day. We don’t have to worry about being objective and pumping up our credibility when we’re telling a story to someone. It’s a natural part of communication and just kind of happens. Analyzing something so innate and simple sometimes complicates it more than is necessary. I think it’s important that we be aware of the types of narrative genres that exist, but I don’t think that a memoir would be appropriate for many of us to use in our next project.
Although there was great detail in each section, after reading this chapter I’m still not sure how I would translate it into project three. Personally, I’m not sure if I’ll translate my second project into a narrative piece or not. My project two was about aviation and I’m not sure there would be a way to write a narrative piece about the issue within that community. Plus, I think it’s hard for us to feel good about moving forward onto project three, still unsure of how we did on project two.
I agree, I’m having a hard time trying to make my project two translate into a narrative, too. I feel like a lot of us are going to run into that problem, which makes project three much more difficult. Just like you said, it really is proving to be a lot harder than I think any of us thought!
While I think reworking our paper might be a bit of a challenge, I thing that the chance to really express our different voices and creative styles will allow us to really excel. I'm super excited!
Narrative Voices Response
So when I realized that the title of this reading was Narrative Voices I prepared myself for an other really interesting read about pathos, ethos, and logos (was that sarcasm? I think it was). It just seems like we'll never be able to escape those three words, but I guess that's kind of the point. Anyway, the reading was mildly helpful in helping me decide the different ways that I'm going to use to remake my paper. I don't know about anybody else but I'm super excited for this project, partly because we're finally doing something that isn't a huge paper that will consume all of my time, instead we have three small projects that will still consume most of my time, but I'm excited to finally express myself in something that isn't so formal. I'm currently exploring s lot of different options especially some of the more informal options, because I'm not a very formal person. However, I am a little worried that I might spend way too much time on one part of the project and then I'll have to throw together The other two in like an hour... Overall, I think the reading was helpful and I can't wait to get started on our new project!
Ch. 21 & 22 MHH
I laughed reading your reflection, it was very optimistic despite pretty grim circumstances. I always catch myself finding motivation to go the extra mile with citations with the threat of stepping on someone else’s toes or getting kicked out of the Nole Nation. Anyway, hope you feel better and rejoin the Seminoles soon!
I hope you’re doing better now! Also I don’t think I’d have that much dedication, just saying. Anyway, I think it’s wonderful that FSU gives us so many awesome resources because I know I would hate to be kicked out of school for something like accidental plagiarism.
Chapter 21 of the MHH *doot doot*
I would like to preface my reflection for this chapter with two things: 1) I am so glad I finally know what “et al.” stands for because I came across it a lot in my research and had a pretty good idea but it’s nice to know it officially means “and others” (used when mentioning sources with multiple creators), and 2) I love the McGraw-Hill Handbook so much because it is clear and concise and gives me hope to continue on in reading.
So this chapter focuses on the in-text citations for the (M)odern (L)anguage (A)ssociation’s current guidelines. In-text citations are an easy obstacle to tackle, and once this skill is mastered, writing can become elevated to a much higher standard of, let’s call it, gravitas. I started using the OWL Purdue site my junior year of high school in my AP Lang class, and it has proved to be a valuable resource that has been further supported through this class’s readings and teachings. This chapter basically summarizes the information on OWL Purdue for in-text citations in a couple of pages, and is a great review in preparation for the research paper that is due on Thursday. Some of the specific examples: the organization as an author, unknown author, entire work, and web site or other online electronic source, will be very useful for my paper because I have sources from these routes, and one of my sources was even cited as an example! Very excited. Now onto the next chapter~
Yeah we used OWL Purdue in middle school and I thought it was really helpful. I also think this text is super detailed and helpful, but it would have been most helpful in middle school not college. On the bright side, I really though how the book provided advice in specific instances was really helpful.
