Presentation Reflection

Let’s kickoff with a “job well done” pat on the back. It is more than clear that we each worked incredibly hard to pull together our three genres. Not to mention our other projects and assignments throughout the year. Picking just one successful project was a difficult decision to make, but in the end, I decided that Morgan’s ( @mmmorganrook ) was exceptionally well executed.

Talk about popular… Her Twitter genre was a runaway success, a follow from her favorite author, some from others in the book field (is that an accepted term?) along with lots of other interested parties all tuned in to her tweets. Some part of me envies just how successful the page was with followers numbering in the hundreds. With a topic so specific it was almost surprising to find that the public was so engaged, I suppose the novelty of the subject matter accounts for the interest generated. 

Using a Twitter account to promote a PSA and a Wattpad site was a tactical strategy that I myself tried to employ, but it seems to have worked to an unmatched extent in her work. Memes, a hilarious twitcon, an inarguably creative short story, and successful marketing came together to make Morgan’s campaign a highly commendable whole.

Hey David (and Morgan lol), I totally agree with you! Morgan’s project was spectacular (just like everyone else’s) and her twitter was a smash! I even followed it myself. Most Effective Presentation

It’s sad to see this class come to a close because it really has been an awesome semester! I really enjoyed project 3 and I wish that there was a major dedicated to composing different genres, because I truly enjoyed it. There were so many great presentations, and it was obvious everyone spent a lot of time creating their genres, but one particular one stood out to me. Zoe created an absolutely awesome interactive timeline, and it was really obvious that she spent a lot of time on it. I found her topic about Dr. Who really interesting and I found myself wishing I could have read her research paper for project two to see how she wrote 3000 words on the Dr. Who fan base. 

I also found Kyle’s presentation very effective because of his awesome BuzzFeed article. It made everyone in the class laugh and I’m sure we all would have loved to sit there and read the whole thing. The fact that the whole article was sarcastic and funny was really pleasing since global warming usually isn’t a very humorous topic. He used a new approach and I think, given time, it could become really effective. 

Again, I could go on and on about so many great presentations, but I figured I’d spare everyone the long read. Shout out to those last few presentations that had less than a minute to present, even though it was so short, I still found all of them just as effective!

Hey Allison, I agree with you. While this has been a tough semester, I’ll miss struggling to wake up alongside all of you everyday and seeing y’all everyday! As far as the presentations go, you are spot on! Zoe had an assuming project and so did Kyle, and, honestly, everyone else lol. I was SO impressed by Zoe’s timeline, it was clear that she is a wizard with the computer. I would love to read her presentation. And I talked all about Kyle’s project in my blog post. Final Project Presentations

    Where do I begin? Honestly, everyones presentation was AMAZING. You all had such interesting projects and I loved seeing them and learning just how different everyone’s interpretation on this project was. With that being said, I think that Kyle’s presentation was probably the most effective. Honorable mentions include the class trailblazer Mak, Zoe, Cheslee, Morgan, Rachel, and Mckenzie. Kyle’s presentation was the most successful for several reasons. He remained within a short time period, gave us all of the information we needed and compiled in a central location- prezi, did not knock his topic by saying, “no one cares about my topic,” and kept us interested and engaged with his sense of wit. I was genuinely so impressed with his project, and am very interested in the topic as well! I admired that he had the courage to stand on Landis green and ask people to participate in his project-making his presentation all the better. Also, the historic nod to one of our past presidents with the mention of a “fireside chat” as a podcast title was brilliant! FDR would be proud. I can’t wait to learn more about his campaign, and will be checking out those podcasts. Also, his buzzed article was very entertaining, while also a quality source of information on his topic! Well done @kylecontrast and thank you for sharing. To everyone else, thank you for sharing too! Your projects were all amazing and you need to believe more in yourself because, in the famous words of queen Rupaul herself, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the Hell you goin love somebody else? Can I get an amen?!”

A New York Breath

    As the first night of December descended upon the city Tuesday night, @mmmorganrook and I decided to attend the Warehouse reading. Arriving on the scene a second time presented a completely different and polar opposite wash of emotions than my first visit did. I felt warm from the very start and giddy to experience the night! We road to the venue in my 2004 Grammy Cammy (and I absolutely love that car), pulling up just before 8 pm and got good seats by the stage at the same stools I sat at previously. We had a good thirty minutes to sit and talk about life, and it was great because I got to know her better and it was a nice de-stressing activity from the hectic pre-finals schedule going on.

     The two girls appeared once again, introducing the night to those of us in the audience. They spoke of a man, Mark Bibbins, from New York and immediately I was hooked. I have never been to the city, and always find interest in those who live there or have lived there. There’s a mark on them, and one that is distinguishable so I was anxiously awaiting his words. About halfway through is set, he read a tweet from Katya Zamolodchikva, and referenced RuPaul’s Drag Race, and I knew I loved this man.

     In all sincerity, I LOVED hearing about his life, and wished he had spent more time speaking on his experiences than reading his poetry. His poems were great, but I think I might just have a personal vendetta against hearing poems out loud? Because I felt like he had the same voice as Deborah and Robin both. Who knows.

     Anyways, his readings followed a very different structure than the other two that I saw, because he would read a poem, and then a comedic tweet. This odd combination intrigued the audience and made me feel so much more engaged because I was constantly wondering “what’s coming next??”

     His last reading, “A Small Gesture of Gratitude” was one that stuck out the most to me. I connected on a spiritual level with that one and absolutely loved it. I’m working on a graphic to print out and hang up lol. Overall, I enjoyed his work and presentation (and the glass of wine was so classy I was impressed). It was also great to see BB out in the world and hang with Morgan! Love these readings and will try to go to some in the spring. Also, here’s our selfie, #yourewelcome

     OH! I almost forgot, I really wanted to ask him about being around the gay scene in New York so many years ago, but didn’t know if that was appropriate and the line was super long so I just left lol.

Two Poets, One Night

     During the week that I died and disappeared from life, I decided that I felt well enough to attend the Warehouse Reading that Tuesday night (mistake). I trekked the twenty minute walk in brisk autumn air from my HUN course in the Sandals to Landis, then past that to the Sweet Shop, following back alleys and one way roads until I finally landed upon the location by Gay street and thought, “Yupp, I’m here.”

     Positioned in front of me stood a large blank structure with overgrown vines that reminded me of the Lakeland Community Theatre’s wood shop back home. I honestly thought that I was at the wrong place and was about to enter the world of The Godfather or a New York Bronx mafia (too much Law and Order SVU over the break I know). Apprehensively, I entered and saw some familiar faces that I met up with and felt at ease. Comfortable even. We played some pool, then lounged on the stools until the time arrived for the two ladies to approach and introduce the night to us.

     I had no idea what to expect honestly, and the two were so welcoming, which immediately made me more excited for the readings. They told us that the two women were Robin Schaer and Deborah Landau. These names had no resonance with my own recognizance, but nonetheless intrigued me. I remember that both women were mothers, and both interpreted this role very differently. My reflection will mostly include quotes that I took notes on while they read.

     Robin read works mostly from her collection, Shipbreaking, that centered on “what is worth surviving for?”- a topic I was interested to hear more on. Unfortunately, a lot of these poem did not spark a particular interest in me from being heard verbally, possibly because of the way she read them. I would like to read them though at some time! I am particular about the way people speak things (maybe because of the acting background in me), but I am not trying to be bougie in anyway, it just didn’t seem genuine (but I am sure that it was because I could tell her words meant a lot). I pulled some good quotes from them! “You command dark tides”, “this love is talons”, and “how to survive these (life’s) disasters?” My favorite thing that she read was the last poem about extinction and birth, I could listen to it for hours and that one sold me on her. I wish she had started with that one.

     I’m not sure what it was about her, but Deborah seemed more memorable to me. I can still recall the way her voice sounded and the nature of her speech patters. Being sick and all, I could have fallen asleep for years listening to her! Her poems got to me more, and I didn’t write many notes, but did pull two quotes that I liked. “Men look at me like they have the thing I want,” and “I don’t have a pill for that.” Both of these felt like thoughts I have had in life and I felt validated hearing them. She did have the similar voice reading as Robin, so maybe it is a poet thing? I’m not sure. It was funny to me because both readers would speak to us in a casual nature and then when they read their poems they immediately dropped into a routine speak. It made me giggle a little.

     So, that was my experience! I did enjoy it and have been back since that chilly November 17th night. I ended up having a great time, but arrived back in my room and promptly felt 1000x times worse lol. I always love to experience new things, and that was my first ever poetry reading. CHAPTER 10 in BBG

Before I begin I would like to take a moment to thank the universe for several things. I want to thank McKenzie for group texting BB’s tweet about the syllabus change, the BBG for having a short & very useful chapter, and the Wesley foundation for the free thanksgiving food I am going to eat after I finish this. All right, here we go:

I found this chapter’s reading to be SO HELPFUL and I feel like we should have been assigned this two weeks ago, it would have expedited my progress on project three as well as provided quality information and examples on what to do for it. The reason I liked this reading so much is because it had a simplified step system for completing this project, concise options for consideration, and great examples of multigenre works that expounded on previous ones in earlier chapters. I am definitely going to use the steps listed as I really dive into my project and feel very blessed to have this resource. I loved the comment that “[T]here are no “conventions” for a multigenre work beyond the use of multiple genres to convey ideas to an audience” (504). The main reason I haven’t executed my project yet is because I have been confused and hesitant, but this statement verified that I can do almost anything to get across my findings from project two and I feel more excited and inspired to do my project now. I also really enjoyed the examples given of other projects, and specifically, I was inspired by one from way back in chapter one that used advertisements in a creative way. This chapter reminded me of that and I already went back to reread the section on it! I am ready to do my stuff and this chapter was (once again) great!

Chapter 10 Response

This is the last tumblr post!  See ya, tumblr!  It was nice knowing you but I think I’ll be fine without you!  On a less happy note, like most of my classmates, I’m getting extremely worried about project 3.  Unlike most people, I have failed to get most of my project out of the first phase (i.e. just my mind).  However, I have been extremely successful at procrastinating and binge watching Daredevil (Oops…).  The reading did provide some sort of relief because it provided lots of relevant information for the project.  Unfortunately, some of the information was redundant based on the other readings that we have done as well as class discussion.  But hey, the reading was really short so I’ll be willing to forgive the reading this time.  It provided lots of information on the rhetorical situations and conventions of different genres.  The reading stressed that it is important for an author to reach their intended audience, like you wouldn’t give a paper about how great FSU is to a UF student who wouldn’t be able to appreciate it and how awesome FSU is.  The different steps that the reading provided were a little less than helpful but I get their point.  Well, I guess I better go get my project going… Good luck to anyone else.

Hey! First of all, I am at the exact same stage as you, I have yet to begin execution of my project, but feel way better about it now! Personally, I feel that the reading had a lot to offer on with the helpful steps for doing the project and the in depth look at previous projects mentioned. November 17th Readings

Well I can honestly say that I got more out of these three readings than I ever did out of the chapters in Bedford Book of Genres. Also, they were substantially more enjoyable to read, and they were easier on the eyes. So, ranked in order of preference of all the readings we have had to do this semester, I would rank these articles first, then the McGraw Hill Handbook, and finally the Bedford Book of Genres. I think what made these articles so helpful was the fact that they were extremely relevant to Project Three. Lately, I have been feeling like I can’t grasp Project Three fully or what the expectations for Project Three are, but these articles helped illustrate what we should be aiming for. The articles displayed how documents and medias are designed to attract specific audiences. It never really occurred to me that we all have our own unique audiences for this project, and that I need to focus mainly on my specific audience. This article showed me that in order to be successful in Project Three, I need to fully understand the best media that will impact my audience the most. These articles were exactly what I needed moving forward with Project Three, and I now feel confidence in my project’s future.

Zaaam the shade on the BBG is so intense here, and I am not against it lol. I feel that these readings were good and informative, and am glad you both got so much out of them! I would say that I learned good things but not as much as from reading the BBG (which is a pain). That aside, I agree with these being helpful for project three! Readings for 11/16/15

SFH Layout and Pages aka How to Make a Pretty Project

     This source covered the “aesthetic” aspect to presentations and projects, and how to format an item so that it is easy to comprehend and easy to look at and follow, which will be very useful in conducting project three. I know that subconsciously whenever I create a project to present I want it to look its best and be easy to follow, and reading this text helps a lot with that. It gives a lot of very specific information that I had not previously thought about to such an extent. This source covers how to layout pages, and how to choose type. The way that material is presented defines how effective it is, and the examples listed very clearly explain this topic. I think that all of the subheadings about helpful tips (such as “arrange material according to relevance”, and “adjust type size for readability”) will be extremely useful when composing project three, and also projects in the future. I found exercise 18.2 to be interesting while reading, and want to try this out when writing in the future (composing in four different formats and picking the one that is the best). I also never knew that the font types had names, like ?!?!?!?! that honestly blew my mind. There are serif fonts, sans serif fonts, decorative or ornamental fonts, and symbol fonts. Crazy stuff y’all.

SFH Images and Photos aka How to Use Photos Well

     PRAISE! *off topic* I discovered how to rotate the reading to portrait layout so it was easier to read (my head and neck are very grateful lol). If you want to figure out how: click the button at the bottom with two slides and a telescope looking thing. 

     So, this reading seemed to be useful for my project three as I began, because I am doing a flyer (venn diagram) and a visual aid to be involved when presenting to people (the advertisements pasted onto cans and bottles of sweetened beverages). The reading focused on describing how to use images/photographs and color in a product or for a presentation. Honestly, I feel like this information (similar to that of the first reading) is full of tips that I have learned over years of experience with projects and presentations, but nevertheless, I liked reviewing and refreshing myself for project three. I agreed with most of the tips that the writers had, however, I am very passionately against brick red font on blue backgrounds, and black on gold. Maybe it was just the way I saw it here, but when they fell under “readable color combinations” I laughed because I find these two to be very difficult to read and, quite nasty to be candid.

Analyzing Visual Rhetoric aka 20 Questions

     This one-paged graphic with text contains many questions that pertain to the title of the work, “analyzing visual rhetoric”. The goal of this reading is to “look at design with a critical eye”, so I am assuming that BB will use some of these when grading our projects. I think that these questions can also serve as a good rubric while creating our projects for us to use as a good outline of what to do and how to fulfill the goals of project three. While it covers many of the same topics that have been discussed in class and previous readings (genre, purpose, and audience), it extends to question more specific things such as readability, layout, and organization. I will most certainly be reading over these again each time I begin composing for project three and will try to remember after so that I can make final changes before presenting to the class!

Analyzing Visual Rhetoric

The first part of the selection “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric” is very similar to what we have been doing all along in this course. You determine who the audience is, what the purpose is, what the genre is, and what the medium is. All along, we have been determining these genre conventions. However, this selection adds more. This calls you to look more at the structure, organization, and layout of a design. These are things we have never considered in detail. While this stuff makes sense, seeing it on paper is new to me. This reading tells you to look at margins, headers, lists, colors, and fonts. It reminds you to consider if some information would read more efficient in a list, graph, or table. When I read over this short section, it reminded me of Ms. B suggesting we do an infographic (I think that’s what it is called). All of these things would be very important if you were doing one of these for Project 3. After giving it more thought, I kind of regret not doing an infographic. I think this reading assignment would have helped, but I think it will still help with my blog.

SFH Layout and Pages

What I immediately noticed about these readings is that they would really be helpful for advertisements, infographics, resumes, and brochures. Luckily, the genres I chose for Project 3 are mostly already laid out and I don’t have much control over it, especially my Instagram. My blog post also has a predetermined layout, but I have options to change my text, add colors, and add specific features too. Blogs already have headings too, so it isn’t necessary for me to worry about those here either. I will definitely refer back to these when I am finalizing my blog and spending a lot of time on it. As of right now, I am focusing on getting my information out there. As I am forming my posts, I need to pay more attention to my fonts! My third genre is a collage. I don’t see how this chapter really relates to that genre because there isn’t any text that needs to be formatted, blocked, or rearranged. Overall, I think this reading would be very helpful if I would have chosen to do a brochure or advertisement like I had originally planned. Is it too late to change?

SDH Images and Photos

All of my genres incorporate pictures. My blog posts haven’t seen any pictures yet, but I plan on posting some. Every Instagram post is built around a picture. My collage is solely images. The reading states, “Photos and illustrations let you show readers – at a glance—aspects of your subject that would otherwise need lengthy description.” This is a big part of my Instagram genre. If I upload a picture of myself in a yoga position, it is so much easier to see and understand the position than trying to picture it in your head based of a text description. I am still deciding if I want to gather pictures for my collage from parenting magazines or from the internet. It will probably be from the internet since it is so easy to gather and so easy to edit to conform to the idea in my head.

Imagine you are head of a Media Industry.

Considering what you read last night, how would your craft that industry?

What is your mandate?

What will you publish or produce?

What would you need on your team?

Now, moving into project 3, what can you use from the readings to put toward crafting your composition into three genres?

If I were to be the leader of a Media Industry like Oprah, I would want my product to be good for the earth. I would be into an organization that promotes environmental awareness through letters, posts, or magazines, and possibly creates a specific product that people could buy and then give the profits from that product towards environmental efforts. The mandate of my organization would be to promote awareness about the earth and focus on bringing people more aware and centered on conserving and using less. I will possibly publish and produce both print and electronic forms of material for people to read and learn from as well as a bracelet or type of attractive jewelry to generate revenue that will fund the efforts of the company. I would need some environmental experts on my team who can supply me with adequate information, media experts who can provide effective outlets of communication to the public, and overall I need a staff that really cares about my goals. In order to reach people who don’t care about my issue I will try to employ the rhetorical appeals and reach people’s emotions or senses of logic. From the reading I have learned about the steps of creation and the descriptions of media industries that I will use for my (mini) media industry of my paper for project two.

Media Studies Response

So I’m starting to get more and more stressed out about this project. I think I’m most worried about having to gauge people’s reactions to my different medias. However, I think the reading this week, though a bit painful to read, was helpful with my problem. The reading broke down and discussed different types of media and how they are use, etc. It provided a lot of detail, some of which wasn’t necessary, but overall it was helpful given the upcoming project. The study of media is broken down into three categories: Production, Distribution, and Exhibition. This is good for me and my desire to be in the filmmaking industry because there are some clear similarities between this process and the filmmaking process (but that’s really besides the point.) Back to my worry though, the distribution and examination of people’s response to my new media types. This is due to the fact that I’m a little socially awkward so it will be difficult for me to talk to them about my project. I think my solution to this will be to use media over the internet, such as an informal article or something. I’ll figure it out I guess, but best of luck to everyone else!

Media Studies Article

I agree with the comment about distribution. Distribution is essentially about picking audience and then picking the forms of media that will most appeal to that audience. It is also taking into account which forms of media will reach the most audiences. These are things that we will have to consider. I never gave communication majors much credit but there is a serious strategy to it.

“Media Industries” Article Reflection Time

THE READING MENTIONED PETER JACKSON AND HE DIRECTED THE LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIES WHICH I have not seen yet but STILL, RELEVENCE PEOPLE, RELEVENCE. He has directed/produced the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit movies, the Lovely Bones, King Kong, and tons more. I am very impressed, and also thank you reading for making me happy.

Ok, moving on: FINALLY, a ~semi~ definition for industries appears (I might have read these out of order lol here we are). Industries are characterized by the systematic and technological organization of their activities, and their reliance on existing industrial models.

Steps that constitute the structural organization of the Industrial Media (described through the same parallel to the film industry):

1. Production (where projects originate, are identified and negotiated, usually invisible to the public)

     pre-production, principal photography, and post-production

2. Distribution (the key to the project being made and reaching an audience)

3. Exhibition and Retail (selling the rights to a product for reaching people and making that money)

4. Promotion and Protection of the Industry 

     1. extending markets, business and profits

     2. promote the industry

     3. industry solidifies its stance through festivals and shows

     4. managing relations with public institutions and government

All of these steps work together to produce a final product. I also liked the example of a film being created throughout the article because it gave me some ideas about what to do for my final project and hopefully I can execute my ideas successfully. Thanks for reading and see y’all tomorrow!

Understanding Media

THIS IS PROBABLY THE FAVORITE ARTICLE OF ANY READING I’VE EVER HAD FOR THIS CLASS. I’m a huge fan of South Park and for them to use examples from “The Underpants Business” episode and to mention the Underpants Gnomes made me so happy. As for moth South Park episode they always satirize a current problem or current event. This highlighting the reality of media industry is run mostly for profit and no other reason. This article explaining the reasons for the profit search. It explains the behind the scenes. I had no idea that media was this complex. Media affects our words our humor ex. The South park 1,2, ??? Profit meme is all over the internet. The article also shows that media companies in the United States made over 300 Billion in net profits in 2008. Showing how successful the media industry is which nobody really takes into consideration! I know I definitely don’t. But media success is vital to our lives today. Media surrounds us from TV shows, Advertisements on the walls or radio broadcasts.  Definitely one of the better reads I’ve had for this class. Thoroughly enjoyed would read again 10/10 times. i’m finished with my rant now.

It would be interesting to see the data from new media as that is emerging as a totally new format and big business of its own that is changing the mold.
