Kind of a rant, but the whole
"'I want more complex characters!' Well you couldn't handle *insert complex character*"
Is stupid asf.
The people asking for more complicated characters are probably also the people who enjoy deconstructing the motivation behind the actions of a complicated character. This person may also dislike that character. That's okay. You're allowed to dislike a character and also recognize that they were morally grey.
With that being said: not every morally grey or complicated character is well written. Sometimes, they're very objectively bad. Other times, some people think they weren't portrayed well, while some people think they were done really well. This can be part of what makes a complex character, well, complex. Different opinions.
Additionally: you can dislike a character and recognize that they were well-written.
The only actual issue is when people are unable to recognize the reason behind a character's actions, then dumb them down to just "stupid", "a bitch", "pick-me", "mean girl", "evil", etc. But those kinds of people also aren't the ones asking for more complicated characters.
Most of that was probably bordering incoherent, but my point is: the people who can't recognize the complexity of a character aren't usually the same people asking for more complex characters. So the fucking "you couldn't handle [insert character]" is stupid, because you're talking to two totally different groups.
"I dislike this character" =/= "this character isn't well-written", "this character is evil"
I should probably take a break from the tadc and alnst/zomst fandoms... or the internet as a whole...
