OC Help/Resource Files: How to Find A Name for your OC (based on a real location)
Today I will take into my process I use to find names for my OCs based on their race/ethnicity/nationality. I will use my own OCs as examples and share various tips to find a good name for your characters.
1. FORM: THE NAME'S GRAMMAR
1.1 WHAT IS THEIR NATIONALITY/RACE/ETHNICITY?
The most basic question? Where are they from? What's their race, ethnicity and nationality?
This is the most important quesiton to guide us into the research needed to name our character and to obtain a decent amount of accurency because i hope you werent planning to name a Korean character (BORN IN KOREA) Maggie Abachev-Carmicheal, right??
Unless there are scenarios in your OCs lore that would allow it to make sense, like adoption, interracial parents, a name change, second-generation immigration, & more.
1.2 NAMING CUSTOMS/TRADITIONS & EXCEPTIONS.
Before choosing the actual name, you need to look over the naming customs/traditions of each country/ethnicities your characters belong to. it varies from country to country, religion to religion, language to language, & more
it is crucial to have a decent idea of how names are composed to make sure it makes sense and to not come up with something wrong. It is important to take in considaretion, if the OC has known parents, siblings & relatives (because how names are passed among families varies as well)
Example (Korean):
Depending on the name's grammar, there could be extra rules regarding names that are crucial to include in your OCS.
For example:
(Why Everyone in Thailand has an unusual nickname.)
While many Thai names are long, nicknames (often based on food or other short words) are assigned to everyone. THIS IS VITAL INFORMATION! If you had a Thai OC, their close circle would likely address them by their nickname and also it would be realistic to the country naming traditions/customs.
Ok so you have an idea the rules of name, where can i find ideas for names. Here's few suggestions i often to come up with my ocs names:
Baby Names Ideas Sites
Good ressource! There's so many options BUT requires more reaserch as it often doesnt contain nuances (ex: names branded under the hispanic umbrella while often not specifiy which country these names are used in, names used in Spain vs Puerto Rico are NOT 100% the same (example: Spanish Baby names)
Reddit (example: r/namenerds)
Wikipedia
As a large gallery of names, classified by country, eethnicity, nationality, religious origin and more. (example: English Language surname)
Governmental Site or Country Name Data List.
Some countries, province/states or cities sometimes compile their name data. Letting you know the most popular names in their region (often organized per year). You can find some of them in the reference sections of many Wikipedia pages. (ex: Quebec name bank (10 most popular rank by year)
Sites about Names (and their meaning)
There are many sites focusing on names who goes deeper than regular mainstream baby name sites, where we can find the meaning of each names like behindthename.com. (ex: Nigerian names)
Real people you know...
My favourite : Athletes' List.
The reason it is my favourite option , it is divided by country with 100% certainty that those name and their formation are used in REAL LIFE. it also includes smaller nations and is seperated by gender.
Look up sites like World Athletics.org (ex: British Virgin Islands) and Wikipedia (ex: Liechtenstein)
3. HOW TO CHOOSE THE NAME?
(I'll use my OC as an example)
REALISTIC OR INSPIRED (BY CHARACTERS 'S RACE OR CULTURE) (take with a grain of salt)
With all the information collected, figure out if you want to make an authentic name or modify certain aspects while remaining true to the OC origin (like a composed name, a fantasy-inspired existing name, a name mashed together, & etc.)
(Exhibit A: A Naruto OC, Haku Yuki's ancestor. Many part of his character is based on various asian cultures. I've changed the formation his name, as he is from the past and it signals that his name formation is no longer used in modern Kiri)
BY VIBE AND SOUND
My #1 way of choosing the right name: I just go with vibes and how i think it sounds (after respecting the naming customs, of course.)
(Exhibit B: (MY OCS) Romeo Mitchell (Trinidad & Tobago) and his wife Yamira Lutchman-Khan (Trinidad/India). Really was looking for names that would match their cool design.)
BY MEANING & THEME
If you wanna follow a particular theme in your story (ex: or among the charaacters themselves (ex: the all have flower names or naming the charaters based on qualities the OC). The possibilities are endless...
(Exhibit C: (MY OCS) This is a friend group from Brazil. While their names were already determined, I followed a "nature" theme for their surnames. From left to right, Taina Estrela (means Star). Carlos Almeida-Carvalho (means Oak Tree) and Antonio Alves-Rosa (means Rose)).
BY ETHNIC GROUP
Take the time to make sure the name fit the character's ethnic group as well. It would be more appropriate to use an Indigenous name or ethnicity accurate for Indigenous characters or members of smaller ethnic groups instead of the dominant ethnic group of the country they reside like Latin American Indigenous vs Spanish, Various Ethnic groups of an African country (like Nigeria), Romani vs European, so many more.
CHECK IF SOMEONE DOESN'T HAVE ALREADY (IF YOU CARE)
On a funny note, after I find a name for my OC, i like to google their name to make sure a 10000 another oc dont have the same name. A part of me would like it if you have to Google their name, you would find them (we know it's not 100% possible, i know someone on Facebook has the same name), but at least not have the same as a random anime character (ignore this tips if you're not as petty as me)
(Exhibit D: (MY OCS) His name is Bae Jooyoung and I've checked if a random kpop idol had the same name and were ok for now lol)
THANKS FOR READING, HOPE IT HELPS!!!!!!
(yes, i'll elaborate on my ocs more later...)
