If a human being is trapped without a working fire exit in a place of employment, the employer has a responsibility to remedy the situation immediately. Failure for them to do so is worth fines and a lawsuit, and that's if nothing bad happens to the trapped person.

And no emergency exit? That's absolutely against fire code (NFPA 101) and a "we will revoke the occupancy permit for the building until it is corrected" class penalty. (on top of fines, etc.)

And getting fired for that? that's a Labor board complaint and a 'wrongful termination' lawsuit, except that would be a pyrrhic victory at best.
